Arsenal won the Community Shield on penalties, with Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois missing in the shootout, following a 1-1 draw in normal time at Wembley.
Chelsea began without Diego Costa, Nemanja Matic and John Terry, and with none of their new signings in the starting XI. Alexandre Lacazette started for Arsenal and hit the post with the best chance of the half, with Sead Kolasinac making a first-half start when he replaced Per Mertesacker, who received an accidental elbow to the face from Gary Cahill.
In the second half, Victor Moses put Chelsea ahead within seconds of the restart with a finish from close range.
With 10 minutes left, Pedro was surprisingly sent off for a hack at Mohamed Elneny, and from the free-kick, Kolasinac could head in unmarked.
Olivier Giroud won it for Arsenal, blasting a penalty down the middle in the new ABBA shootout format, after Alvaro Morata and Courtois missed for Chelsea.

TALKING POINT

Should Pedro have been sent off? Yes, is the short answer. Pedro's challenge was late, and it went down into Elneny's Achilles after launching himself into the air. It seemed harsh on first look, but there was enough justification looking at the replays.

MAN OF THE MATCH

David Luiz (Chelsea): Few would have expected that Luiz would be Chelsea's new defensive leader, but he has come back from his time in France vastly improved. He was at the heart of Chelsea's defensive solidity, and could be vital to a fresh league and European campaign for his side.

80' - RED CARD! Pedro's late challenge catches Elneny on the Achilles. Pedro then goes down with cramp, and is looking set for a booking when he gets back up. But it's a red! Pedro's challenge was late, and he had come down into the Arsenal midfieder, so it's not too shocking.

PENALTY 7' - GOAL! Chelsea 1-4 Arsenal. Giroud wins it for Arsenal. His penalty, down the middle, makes it impossible for Chelsea to come back from the deficit. Arsenal made the most of their advantage as soon as Pedro lost his composure, and now Arsenal have two wins in a row against Chelsea at Wembley.
