FULL TIME

So it's yet another trophy for Manchester City, five in a row domestically now. The take home point from the game though will surely be that there is so little between these two teams. Last season they gave us a title race of unparalleled excellence - can they possibly embark on something similar in 2019-20? Given the quality on show today, it's hard to see who else in the Premier League could possibly reach the level needed to make it a three horse race.

SHOOTOUT

Liverpool are going first here, Shaqiri against Bravo will get us going, at the Liverpool end.

FULL TIME

It takes wafers to separate these two sides. Last season it was one Premier League point and arguably the 11mm that denied Liverpool a goal at the Etihad in January and the title; we need penalties here at Wembley.

FULL TIME

The corner comes to nothing; that's the end of the match, and we're going to penalties!

90+4

Another chance for Liverpool! City are gone here. Salah lays in Shaqiri on the right of the area, whose low shot is parried out for a corner by Bravo.

90+2

OH WHAT A CHANCE FOR LIVERPOOL TO WIN IT! A mistake from Otamendi lets Salah in. His first effort is saved by Bravo; he heads the rebound goalwards, and a spectacular acrobatic clearance from Walker underneath his own bar diverts the ball out for a corner. How on earth did Walker get to that!

90'

There will be a minimum of four additional minutes.

89'

Phil Foden replaces De Bruyne.

88'

CHANCE FOR LIVERPOOL! City are caught trying to play out from the back. Oxlade-Chamberlain nicks it and lays the ball to Salah, who spins to shoot from eight yards out but Bravo rushes out just in time to smother the ball away to safety.

87'

Salah again cuts in and shoots from the right; it's scuffed straight at Bravo.

85'

For the umpteenth time today, Salah cuts in from the right and unloads with his left foot. It deflects off Zinchenko and loops just over the bar for a corner.

83'

CLOSE! Two of Liverpool's substitutes, Shaqiri and Lallana, carve out a chance for a third, Keita. He gets a good look at goal from fifteen yards out, but puts his shot too close to Bravo and it's parried away. Liverpool are on top here, with momentum and fresh legs driving them forward.

82'

Just a reminder that, should the next 8-15 minutes not yield a goal, we'll be going to penalties to decide the Community Shield.

79'

A triple change for Liverpool now - Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana and Shaqiri are on, replacing Firmino, Henderson and Origi.

77'

GOAL! Liverpool 1 (Matip 77) Manchester City 1

Liverpool are level! Henderson whips across a free-kick from the right, which deflects away to van Dijk at the back post. He calmly chests it under control, lobs it back into the six-yard box and Matip gets up to head the ball in!

75'

There are some weary bodies out here now. Liverpool look like they're planning a double change, with Shaqiri and Lallana being readied.

73'

De Bruyne springs into life, cutting into the Liverpool area, but he can't properly get hold of his shot and Allison saves easily.

69'

Salah again goes close for Liverpool. Henderson feeds him on the right, he cuts across the area and his low shot to the near post is well saved by Bravo.

67'

Substitutions for Liverpool - Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho off, Keita and Matip are on.

65'

After that flurry of activity there's a welcome bit of edge to the game now. Robertson in particular seems fired up, giving Bernardo Silva a pointless shove after winning a throw-in.

61'

WHAT A CHANCE FOR CITY! Sterling gets clean through again from a ball by Walker and is onside. He almost has too much time to think - he can't decide whether to return the ball to Walker or shoot, and the moment of indecision costs him as he stumbles into Allison and the ball is ushered away to safety. Liverpool aren't happy here, as Walker clattered Origi to win the ball initially.

60'

A change for City, Gundogan replaces David Silva. The officials have just checked VAR for a potential red card offence for a foul by Alexander-Arnold, but decided there was nothing in it.

58'

LIVERPOOL HIT THE WOODWORK AGAIN! Great work from Salah, who pirouettes out of a mesh of City players on the right of the area and slightly scuffs his drive onto the post, from where it rockets away from danger.

57'

SO CLOSE! Alexander-Arnold whips the ball in low, it skids through to van Dijk who gives it the full Geoff Hurst and crashes a shot onto the bar. It bounces down, hits the line... and drifts away to safety.

56'

Liverpool win a corner after good work by Firmino.

54'

Salah jinks into the area from the right again, but coughs the ball up and City clear. He really seems of a mind to do it on his own so far.

52'

Salah has a gallop at Zinchenko down the right, and forces a corner.

49'

City almost catch Liverpool with a high line again. Sterling goes clean through and hits the post, but was just offside.

48'

A scuffed Origi shot deflects safely into the hands of Bravo.

47'

Good work from Sterling on the left. He gets to the byline and cuts it back to Jesus, who lays it off to David Silva. He takes the half -volley first time, but slashes it over the bar.

2ND HALF

We're away again; no substitutions from either side.

HALF-TIME

Liverpool are heading back out first, with City shuffling behind them. The second half is on the way...

HALF-TIME

That's your lot for the first half. City have a deserved lead after a hectic opening stanza in which both teams could have scored more than once. The game has settled down now, with both sides sparring for the initiative, and Liverpool are still well in this.

45+2

Excellent work from City again, as they shift the ball to Bernardo Silva on the right. He gets to the byline but his cross is just too high for Gabriel Jesus.

45'

There are three additional minutes.

44'

Bernardo Silva brings down Origi in the left corner, free-kick to Liverpool. Alexander-Arnold whips it in but Liverpool can't make anything of it. City immediately break and Henderson is forced to head the ball out for a City corner, from which nothing comes.

42'

Gomez wins the ball with a studs up challenge on David Silva. It's a free-kick but nothing more. This has upset Guardiola, who is making his chagrin known to the fourth official Stuart Atwell. For that patter, Guardiola receives a yellow card.

39'

Stones almost gets De Bruyne in from a long pass, but the Belgian is offside. He went a fraction too early, and didn't need too - he was in acres upon acres of space.

38'

Alexander-Arnold, who can whip in a searing cross off his right foot, overcooks this one and the corner sails out for a goal kick.

37'

Liverpool win a corner after Origi's whipped cross is stabbed out awkwardly by Otamendi.

35'

This is still an open game but the handbrake of slight caution does now seem to have been applied. Sterling is having an excellent game here, dragging Liverpool's defenders all over the final third in search of the ball.

32'

Origi leads a break for Liverpool but is cynically clipped by De Bruyne, who goes into the book.

29'

Rodri looks to have settled fairly comfortably into City's midfield so far. Salah gets a half chance for Liverpool, as a scuffed Zinchenko clearance falls to him on the right, but he stabs an off-balance half-volley over the bar.

26'

There's a bit of a lull after that early flurry of action.

23'

Origi leads a break down the left for Liverpool, but Henderson can't control the ball and it eventually goes out for a goal kick.

21'

Liverpool have settled a bit now and our knocking it around nicely. As for City, they look ominous every time they advance into Liverpool's half.

17'

City almost score again, Liverpool are rocking here. Jesus finds De Bruyne in the penalty area, he's tacked and the ball ricochets to Sterling, whose shot is well saved by Allison.

15'

Great play from Salah, who rolls Zinchenko from a long ball and then escapes from his challenge down the City left. He advances menacingly into the area but shoots into the side-netting.

14'

Gabriel Jesus has replaced Leroy Sane.

12'

GOAL! Liverpool 0 Manchester City 1 (Sterling 12)

From the free-kick City hang the ball up to the Liverpool back post and beat the offside trap. Zinchenko heads it across, Silva flicks it across the six-yard box with his heel and Sterling is there to volley his shot through Allison and into the net!

11'

Sane is hobbling here after an accidental collision off the ball. He's really struggling and might come off.

8'

BIG CHANCE FOR LIVERPOOL! Firmino carves out a bit of room in City's final third, and lays it off to a completely unmarked Salah in the City area. He has so much time, but side-foots his effort tamely wide of Bravo's goal. At the moment, this looks very unlikely to be goalless after twenty minutes, never mind at fulltime.

7'

A shot from Bernardo Silva deflects away for a corner. This is wonderfully open so far. Said corner is over hit and drifts out for a throw-in.

6'

Firmino carves a chance out of nothing, from a hopeful long ball forward. After a bit of improvised ball-juggling, he thumps a 20-yard half-volley straight at Bravo.

4'

CHANCE FOR CITY! Sterling catches Gomez dawdling on the ball near the edge of the area, and feeds in Sane on the left. He bursts into the area but wallops his drive into the side netting.

1'

Stones calmly plays out of his own six-yard box under pressure. Both formations are mirroring each other, with intense forward pressure on the back fours, as per last season.

KICK-OFF

The handshakes, pleasantries and anthems are done. Your referee today, Martin Atkinson, gets things moving.

14:54

Here we go then folks; it’s the two teams who amassed 195 of a possible 228 points in the Premier League last season, the European champions versus England’s only ever domestic treble winners. The teams are heading out of the tunnel, it's time...

14:50
Manchester City

Speaking of the accumulation of trophies, Manchester City’s domestic efforts in the last few years are quite stunning. Including the Community Shield, they have landed six of the last seven available. Guardiola stated this week that he would not let the Champions League distract from events at home this season, but he wouldn’t be human if he wasn’t at least a little envious of Liverpool’s European record; an added frisson to the rivalry between the clubs was Liverpool’s triumph in a humdinger of a Champions League quarter-final in 2018.

14:45
Liverpool

Liverpool have had their hands on this trophy, either outright or shared, fifteen times in their illustrious history. The last time was in 2006; since then, they’ve won the 2012 League Cup and the Champions League trophy in Madrid two months ago. Whatever anyone might think of this gong, the sustained collection of silverware both big and small is part of the cachet of a big club, and Liverpool’s manager Jurgen Klopp knows this. Liverpool’s team would suggest they really want to win today, and not just to put one on their main rival.

14:40

It’s a strange old competition, the Community Shield. Dismissed by some as nothing more than a pre-season friendly, counted by others as genuine silverware by others. It didn’t help that the trophy used to be shared if the game finished level, but those days are long gone; it’ll be penalties today if the teams can’t be separated after 90 minutes. The trophy aside, there’s almost certainly a hidden agenda to the game today. Both teams went nose to nose in a stunning title race last year, where City pipped Liverpool by 98 points to 97. Where City have mopped up in the league in recent years, Liverpool have led the way for English clubs in the Champions League. The chance for one to send a message to the other ahead of the 2019/20 season should give this competition today an edge it hasn’t really had since the fractious days of the Arsenal and Manchester United rivalry at the turn of the millennium.

14:35
Manchester City

It’s something of a brave new world for City today, as they get used to things post-Kompany. Stones and Otamendi are paired in defence here. There will also be a debut in midfield for Rodri, after his €70 million transfer from Atletico Madrid this summer.

14:31

Liverpool have gone strong, with nine of their starting eleven from their Champions League final victory over Tottenham in the XI here. The only changes from that night in Madrid are Gomez in place of Matip and Origi instead of Sadio Mane, who’s been given extra time off after the African Cup of Nations and is not involved here.
