Copa del Rey semi-final, Bernabeu – Real Madrid 0 Barcelona 3 (Suarez 50 73, Varane 69 og) – Barcelona win 4-1 on aggregate
Barcelona made their sixth successive Copa del Rey final, inflicting humiliation on Real Madrid by claiming a 3-0 win second leg win (4-1 on aggregate) over their capital rivals.
However, the scoreline did not tell the full story of the game. This was a puzzling performance and result for Real Madrid, who created more chances than the Catalans and should have found the net at least once.
Marc-Andre Ter Stegen make a couple of big saves to keep Barca level in the first half, stopping Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema on more than one occasion. Real Madrid were made to rue those spurned opportunities.
Luis Suarez gave Barcelona the lead with an excellent finish at the near post after a cut back from Ousmane Dembele. Ter Stegen then made another crucial save at a crucial time, stopping Sergio Reguilon from restoring parity with a header from a Vinicius cross into the middle.
However, an own goal from Raphael Varane, who had no choice but to slide into his own net in an effort to stop a cross across the face of goal from reaching Suarez, effectively killed the contest. Suarez himself added the finishing touches, sending a Panenka penalty down the middle to complete the humiliation for the hosts.

Real Madrid must sharpen up or face more defeats like this. On the basis of shots on goal, Real Madrid dominated. They mustered 14 efforts, while Barcelona registered just four. So taking the final scoreline into account, what does that say about Santiago Solari’s side? Well, it says they must sharpen up in front of goal or there will be more nights like this one. They have already been here this season. Vinicius, for all his brilliance and promise, could use some finishing training.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Luis Suarez (Barcelona): Suarez loves playing against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Uruguayan has now scored more goals against the capital club than any other side in La Liga and it was his contribution, in scoring the opener and chipping the Panenka from the penalty spot, that sent Barcelona into their sixth successive Copa del Rey final. Suarez didn’t play all that well on the whole, but he took his chances when they came.
38’ - TER STEGEN SAVES BARCA! That should have been the opener. Pique lost the ball, Vinicius surged through. His first shot was blocked, he then set up Benzema, but Ter Stegen saves with his feet!
40’ - VINICIUS... OVER! Another big opportunity for the Brazilian. Vazquez pulled the ball back for Vinicius. He had to check his run, but he could only send his shot over the Barcelona bar.
51’ - GOAL! Real Madrid 0-1 Barcelona (1-2 on aggregate). What a huge moment in this Copa del Rey semi final! Dembele surged into the box, he cut the pass back for Suarez and the Uruguayan fired a low finish past Navas and into the back of the Real Madrid net at the near post!
65’ - WHAT A SAVE! Almost everyone inside the Santiago Bernabeu thought that was in. Vinicius crossed for Reguilon (!) in the box, but Ter Stegen makes an astonishing flying save! Wow! Another big moment in this tie.
69’ - ALMOST A STUNNER! That would have been a landmark moment in the career of Vinicius. He got beyond THREE Barcelona players and it was only a slight touch from Semedo that took the shot wide.
70’ - GOAL! Real Madrid 0-2 Barcelona (1-3 on aggregate). A hammer blow for Real Madrid! Dembele was played in down the right side, the cross from the French winger was exceptional and Varane turned the ball into his own net as he tried to prevent Suarez from scoring.
72’ - PENALTY KICK TO BARCELONA! It's all falling apart for Real Madrid now. Casemiro stands on Suarez and the referee points to the spot.
73’ - GOAL! Real Madrid 0-3 Barcelona (1-4 on aggregate). And that should be the goal to take Barcelona into the Copa del Rey final! What a cheeky finish from Suarez, scoring a Panenka right down the middle as Navas dives the wrong way. 3-0 to the away side and the defending champions.
Barcelona became the first team in Copa del Rey history to reach six consecutive finals (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019).
Aggregate score from the last five Clasicos (in all competitions): Barcelona 14-5 Real Madrid.
