What a game and what a spectacle. La Bombonera rises at the sound of the full time whistle to applaud their players because what they contributed to was a classic first leg. River Plate will be the happier of the two sides, but Boca Juniors showed that they can compete. Bring on the second leg.

FULL TIME: Boca Juniors 2-2 River Plate
Tevez enters the book late on for stopping a River Plate break.
Is there one last opportunity? River Plate are sitting back. They look happy with a 2-2 draw to take into the second leg at El Monumental. Boca are attacking, but struggling to find a way through.
The replays show just how big a chance that was for Benedetto to give Boca Juniors a 3-2 lead. But credit must go to Armani for the save! The goalkeeper managed to spread himself!
FIVE minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the match.
That was the chance! What a miss! That was the chance for Boca to claim the win to take into the second leg! Tevez played through Benedetto, who was clean through... but Armani makes the save!
Surely there will be one last chance in this game? River Plate give away a cheap corner kick, raising the noise inside La Bombonera, but nothing comes of the set piece for the hosts.
Looks like River Plate are quite happy with taking this result into the second leg. They are slowing things down and that is frustrating Boca Juniors and the home supporters.
Tevez gave Boca Juniors a boost coming off the bench, but it's easy to see that the veteran doesn't quite have the movement and pace that he used to have at his peak.
At the moment, it's River Plate who look the more likely of the two teams to score a third goal. The next goal will be massive in this tie. Will it come in the final five minutes here or in the second leg?
It's Buffarini who comes on for the injured Jara. He will play the final seven minutes.
Jara is injured! This could be another injury for Boca Juniors. GBS is preparing another change. This time it's Jara who is down. The stretcher is on and he won't be able to continue.
Is there one last chance left in this game for either of these two teams? Boca Juniors are the ones pressing at the moment, but surely Quintero will get one chance since coming on.
Tevez lets rip! Good play between the former Man City forward and Abila gives Tevez the shooting chance from 20 yards out, but he flashes a shot over the near post! Armani was worried.
Finally, Quintero is on for River Plate. He comes on to replace Martinez. Will he make a difference?
That's a costly yellow card for Borre. That will rule him out of the second leg.
Verbals! Boca Juniors are preparing to launch a freekick from deep into the box, but the set piece is delayed due to some verbal sparring between the two teams in the area. The ref intervenes!
Here is a change for the home side and it's Villa who comes off to be replaced by Tevez.
Will Boca Juniors make a change in the final 20 minutes of this match? They'll know the importance of getting a home win in this first leg... so could we see Tevez off the bench soon?
Casco is the latest player to enter the referee's book. The yellows are starting to pile up now.
This has been a strange game. Boca Juniors have scored when River Plate were the better team and River Plate have scored when Boca Juniors have been on top. Madness.
- Own-goalCarlos IzquierdozBoca Juniors
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Boca Juniors 2 River Plate 2 (61 mins - Carlos Izquierdoz). It's another equaliser for River Plate! The freekick delivery into the Boca box caused mayhem, and under pressure from Pratto it's Izquierdoz who flicks a header into his own net! Poor defending from the home side!
What a miss! That should have been a third goal for Boca Juniors! The cross was played to the back post, but Izquierdoz couldn't find the back of the net! What an opportunity!
River Plate make their first change of the match and it's Quarta who comes off and Fernandez replaces him.
Casco fizzer! That wasn't far away at all! The wing back strikes the ball from 20 yards out, Rossi wasn't sure about that, but it flashes high and wide of the target. Not a bad effort.
Of course, keep in mind that there will be a second leg to be played in this Copa Libertadores final. River Plate won't want to lose this, but they won't be distraught with the scoreline.
Now it's River Plate who are struggling to break down the Boca Juniors defensive line. The hosts are looking more solid at the back since the start of the second half. Much better.
River Plate will surely feel aggrieved to be behind. They have, on the balance of the play, been the better team and have created more. But Boca Juniors have taken their chances.
It seems that Abila was actually booked for protesting the referee's decision not to award a penalty kick, not the dive itself. The Boca Juniors players believe they are being harshly treated!
Abila enters the book for trying to win a penalty by making the most of contact in the box.
So what sort of half will we see after the madness of the opening 45 minutes? Boca Juniors have the lead, but they have looked vulnerable at the back. River will create more.
- 2nd Half
The second half is under way! Boca Juniors have a 2-1 lead over River Plate.

- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Boca Juniors 2-1 River Plate. What a strange opening 45 minutes. River Plate have probably been the better of the two teams, but Boca Juniors go into the break ahead!
- GoalDarío BenedettoBoca Juniors
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Boca Juniors 2 (45 mins - Dario Benedetto) River Plate 1. It's the substitute who has put the home side back in front! Benedetto wasn't even facing the goal, but he knew where it was and managed to find the back of the net with a flicked header from a freekick!
Borre should score! The River Plate forward is played clean through on the Boca Juniors goal, but he goes for the outside of the boot finish and sends it wide of the far post. What a chance!
Good save! Rossi comes to Boca Juniors' rescue again. The shot from Martinez was a powerful one, but the goalkeeper watched it all the way, though the bodies, and made the save with his legs.
So I guess we're back where we started a few minutes. Two goals, two minutes and we're level again. But what drama. The game is starting to open out. Becoming a bit of a classic.
Jara receives the yellow card. Things have gotten a little bit stretched in the past few minutes.
- GoalLucas PrattoRiver Plate
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Boca Juniors 1 River Plate 1 (35 mins - Lucas Pratto). Sensational! Boca Juniors were still celebrating the opening goal and now River Plate have levelled things! Pratto was played through and he found the far corner of Rossi's net with a low finish! What drama!
- GoalRamon AbilaBoca Juniors
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Boca Juniors 1 (34 mins - Ramon Abila) River Plate 0. River have been the better side, but it's Boca who have taken the lead! Armani made the first save from Villa, but the ball fell back to Villa and he squeezes home the finish at the near post! What scenes! Incredible!
This is now a long ball game from Boca Juniors. They already look quite desperate in their attacking play. They cannot make it stick in the final third of the pitch. Going direct now.
River Plate must be pleased with how they have played the opening 30 minutes of this match. They have created two golden opportunities, which they should have taken, and are in control.
So how will the introduction of Benedetto affect Boca Juniors? He might actually give the home side some extra thrust in the final third of the pitch, which is something they could use.
Indeed, there's the change and Pavon comes off. He looks on the brink of tears. He could be out of the second leg with a hamstring injury.
Something has gone wrong! Pavon attempts to effort from distance and it's clear that the Boca Juniors number seven won't be able to continue. The change is being prepared on the bench.
Handbags! Villa and Casco end up shoving each other after an incident between the two players. That's the first time that we have seen some tension between the two teams on the pitch.
Pavon down! Uh oh. This could be a problem for Boca Juniors. Pavon is down on the ground and is holding his hamstring. He's back on his feet, but will he be able to play the whole game?
Villa takes aim! The Boca Juniors forward lines up the shot a long, long way out, but that was a sign of the home side's frustration. Villa was never really going to miss Armani from there.
Groans and moans from the home supporters as their team once again gives up possession inside their own half. Boca Juniors just cannot make the ball stick beyond the halfway line.
Montiel is being given so much time and space down the right wing. He is a right back by trade, but River Plate are enjoying so much possession he's playing as a winger here!
It's quite remarkable how quiet it is inside La Bombonera. The home fans have been left subdued by the start that River Plate have made to the match. They are the team on top right now.
What a save! Rossi keeps the scoreline level! The cross into the box was a good one and Borre's header looked destined for the back of the net. But he pulls off the diving save!
Abila was in! Good play from the Boca Juniors man to turn inside and create the chance inside the penalty area. But he couldn't hold on to the ball and River crowd him out.
Palacios is the teenager who has been linked with both Barcelona and Real Madrid in recent weeks. He is a big player for River Plate and this is a platform for him to show his talent.
Fast and furious start to this match. River Plate have had the better of the early exchanges, with Quarta's header the closest that either team have come to finding the net.
Should have scored! That's a golden opportunity for River Plate! Quarta was completely free about eight yards out, but he managed to send his header wide of the post from the corner.
Save from Rossi! Good save from the Boca Juniors goalkeeper. Martinez tried to catch him out at the near post with the freekick strike, but Rossi was alert and made the stop.
Martinez wins the foul! The Boca Juniors players believe that the River Plate number 10 was offside when the pass was played in behind, but he wins the freekick in a dangerous area.
It's quite noticeable that the referee is trying to keep his cards in his pocket. There have already been a couple of fouls that could have warranted a booking. But that would have set a precedent.
The pitch seems to be playing fine, which is remarkable given the amount of rain that has fallen in Buenos Aires in the past 24 hours. Last night, it was essentially a lake.
