A match for the ages. They'll talk about this one for generations to come. In the end, River Plate had too much for Boca Juniors. The sending off of Barrios changed the game in extra time, giving Boca too much to do. Of course, this final will largely be remembered for what happened off the pitch, but the games weren't that made either.

- End of E.T 2nd Half
FULL TIME: River Plate 3-1 Boca Juniors (5-3 on aggregate).
RIVER PLATE HAVE WON THE 2018 COPA LIBERTADORES!
- GoalGonzalo MartinezRiver Plate
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! River Plate 3 (121 mins - Gonzalo Martinez) Boca Juniors 1 (5-3 on aggregate). That's the goal that settles it! River Plate have won the 2018 Copa Libertadores! Andrada was up for the corner kick, the clearance was made and Martinez sprints the whole length of the Boca half unopposed to score into the empty net!
Off the post! Can you believe it?! Inches away from being the most dramatic of equalisers for Boca Juniors! It was Jara with the volley, but it strikes the outside of the post! So close. Agonising.
This match is surely over now. Boca Junior surely can't muster up a late equaliser when they have just nine men on the pitch? They are out on their feet and River Plate are edging towards history.
Gago has gone off! Oh dear. Boca Juniors will now finish this match with NINE men. Barrios' red card reduced them to 10 and now Gago has injured himself. He walks down the tunnel.
Alvarez chance! That was an opportunity for River Plate to wrap things up. Alvarez had space down the left channel, he cut inside, but could only find the gloves of Andrada with the shot.
It was straight at Armani! Gago takes aim from the best part of 25 yards out, but a deflection took the sting off the strike and the River Plate goalkeeper can make the simple save.
The keeper is up! Is this the earliest you have ever seen a goalkeeper sent up for a corner kick? Andrada is up, but River Plate hold firm and make the clearance away from danger.
The moment that turned the game firmly in River Plate's favour.
- OffJulio BuffariniBoca Juniors
- OnCarlos TévezBoca Juniors
Finally, on comes Tevez. Boca Juniors have never needed him more than they do at this moment.
What do Boca Juniors have left in the tank? There's no time for them to feel sorry for themselves. They need an equaliser in the next eight minutes otherwise it will be defeat to their greatest rivals on the biggest stage.
Under pressure! Boca Juniors come flying up the other end immediately after conceding, with Abila lurking in the box. Mayada turns his back on the ball and it bounces off him and into the keeper's arms.
- GoalJuan Fernando QuinteroRiver Plate
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! River Plate 2 (109 mins - Juan Fernando Quintero) Boca Juniors 1 (4-3 on aggregate). River Plate have taken the lead in extra time and what a strike it was! It's Quinteroi! Is that the goal to win it? There was barely any backlift on the strike from Quintero, but he lashed a strike into the top corner of the net! Wooft! Sensational!
Indeed, Nandez has been exceptional. It was his threaded pass that set up Benedetto for the opener all the way back in the fist half, but he has also battled for the Boca cause.
Boca Juniors have weathered the storm a bit in extra time. River Plate were all over them in the moments after the sending off of Barrios, but Boca don't look so panicked now.
- E.T 2nd Half
The second half of extra time is under way! River Plate and Boca Juniors are still tied, 1-1 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate.
- End of E.T 1st Half
HT IN EXTRA TIME: River Plate 1-1 Boca Juniors (3-3 on aggregate)
Chance for Alvarez! That's the first opportunity for a while, with the ball played to the near post, but Alvarez, who takes the shot first time, shoots wide of the near post. Might have done better.
Quintero is desperate to make an impression here. He caught the eye at the World Cup and seems wary that the world is watching this game. He's been a bit ambitious so far, though.
This might not be a game for Tevez now. We expected to see the former Man City and Man Utd forward at some point, but Boca Juniors need pace on the break and he doesn't offer that.
- OffExequiel PalaciosRiver Plate
- OnJulián ÁlvarezRiver Plate
River Plate go attacking with their change as youngster Alvarez comes on for Palacios.
Boca Juniors are now relying on the pace of Pavon to give them some potency on the counter attack. Everyone looks tired and weary out there, especially the team in blue and yellow.
- OffSebastián VillaBoca Juniors
- OnLeonardo JaraBoca Juniors
Villa is sacrificed as a result of the red card and Jara comes on for Boca Juniors to shore things up.
Some believe Barrios was unfortunate to be shown a yellow card for that tackle. Others are making the argument that he should have been shown a straight red card. This game.
You feel that this will be an onslaught now. River Plate have shown more creativity and invention since the first half, but Boca Juniors still carry a threat on the rapid counter attack.
River Plate have been on top since the half time interval, so the sending off might not change the dynamic of the match much. But are Boca Juniors now playing for penalties?
- Red cardWílmar BarriosBoca Juniors
SENT OFF! A big moment in this match, in this tie. Could this be a turning point? Barrios has been shown a second yellow card and Boca Juniors will have to play with 10 men. His studs were showing.
- E.T 1st Half
The first half of extra time is under way! It's 1-1 between River Plate and Boca Juniors, 3-3 on aggregate.
- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: River Plate 1-1 Boca Juniors (3-3 on aggregate). We're set for extra time.
Is there one last chance left in regulation time? River Plate have been on top for all of the second half. It already feels like Boca Juniors are playing for penalty kicks.
Three minutes of stoppage time for one of these two teams to find a winner before extra time.
- OffPablo PérezBoca Juniors
- OnFernando GagoBoca Juniors
On comes Gago to replace Perez, who was arguably Boca Juniors' best player in the first half.
- Yellow cardWílmar BarriosBoca Juniors
Barrios is shown a yellow card. I think they call that 'taking one for the team' as he stopped a River Plate attack.
Is there a late winner left in this match? If it's going to come, it's surely going to be for River Plate. They are camped on the edge of the Boca Juniors box trying to find a way through.
That was desperate from Abila. He took the shot from about 25 yards out and cuts right across the ball, finding the corner flag rather than the back of the River Plate net. Dreadful.
This feels a long time ago now..
- Yellow cardJonathan MaidanaRiver Plate
Maidana is the latest to enter the referee's book. He went straight through the back of Abila.
- Yellow cardIgnacio FernándezRiver Plate
Fernandez enters the book, but Boca Juniors can't make anything of the freekick. They send the cross over the bar. That was a waste.
Blocked by the River wall! In the end, it was Olaza who took the indirect freekick, but he couldn't find the angle from 15 yards out to get the shot on goal and the block is made.
The tension is rising inside the Santiago Bernabeu as we await the taking of this peculiar and downright bizarre indirect freekick. It looks like it might be Pavon who's going to take it.
An indirect freekick! Well, you don't see this very often at all. The referee has awarded an indirect freekick to Boca Juniors INSIDE the box. Nandez kicked the foot of an opposition player... this is strange. Why not a penalty if it was a foul?
Boca Juniors do have options on the bench. They have Tevez, of course, but they also have Zarate who they could turn to to give them something different in the final third of the pitch.
River Plate are well on top now. Boca Juniors look tired in some of their passes. Surely we're about to get at least one more change? There's no doubt over which way this match is heading as things stand.
- OffGonzalo MontielRiver Plate
- OnCamilo MayadaRiver Plate
River Plate are next to make a change and it's Mayada who comes on for Montiel at right back.
How long will Tevez have to wait before coming on? The former Man City and Man Utd forward isn't the force he used to be, but he could still give Boca Juniors another dimension.
Martinez is really starting to come into his own now. He was quiet in the first half, but the left midfielder is pulling the strings for River Plate and is giving Boca Juniors all kinds of problems.
Has the decision to take off Benedetto after just 60 minutes played into River Plate's hands? It was almost as if Boca Juniors were trying to see out the game, but now they need another goal!
This match hasn't been the best in terms of quality, but the two goals have been exceptional. The opener was fantastic and that River Plate equaliser was very different, but just as good.
- GoalLucas PrattoRiver Plate
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! River Plate 1 (68 mins - Lucas Pratto) Boca Juniors 1. An equaliser! What a passing move that was from River Plate! Boca Juniors were sliced open by the slickness of the play from their rivals and the ball was cut back for Pratto to finish into the gaping net with Andrada at his near post.
River Plate are on top at the moment. Boca Juniors are inviting pressure on top of themselves, but that might be a tactical ploy. Abila will give them an effective outlet on the break. Or at least it should.
Pratto's header was on target! The cross into the area was a good one from the right wing, but it left Pratto with a lot of work to do to generate the power in the header. Andrada makes the save.
That's an interesting change from Boca Juniors. Benedetto has been excellent and opened the scoring in the first half, but Abila - Wanchope - will give them Boca the option to go direct.
- OffDarío BenedettoBoca Juniors
- OnRamon AbilaBoca Juniors
Benedetto is coming off! The goalscorer comes off to be replaced by Abila for the final 25 minutes.
Clash of heads! That looked a sore one. Izquierdoz and a River Plate player (I didn't quite see who, there were a lot of bodies) clash heads and we're going to have another stoppage.
River Plate are cranking up the pressure on their rivals. However, for all that they have created some dangerous situations, they haven't really tested Andrada in the Boca Juniors goal.
- OffLeonardo PonzioRiver Plate
- OnJuan Fernando QuinteroRiver Plate
Ponzio heads off for River Plate and he is replaced by Quintero. Pressure is on him to change the game. His team is trailing.
Andrada certainly clattered into Pratto after the ball was gone. But how did the referee see it? Should that have been a penalty? The goalkeeper is back on his feet and we're playing on.
There's a lengthy stoppage in play at the moment. Andrada is down on the ground and is receiving treatment. This has given both teams a chance to take on instructions from their managers down on the touchline.
Big clash! Pratto clatters into Andrada, who came off his line to make a punch. He didn't actually get the ball, Pratto was brought down having put the shot over. Penalty? Freekick? Nothing?
Into the wall! That was an opportunity for Boca Juniors from the freekick about 20 yards out, but Olaza puts his shot into the top of the River Plate wall. Was that wall the full distance back?
This is a lot better from River Plate at the start of the second half. Does Gallardo stick with the way things are, given that his team are now on top? Or does he make some changes?
Andrada makes the save! Martinez was quiet in the first half, but he takes a shot from the edge of the Boca Juniors box. It picks up a deflection on its way through, but Andrada saves.
River Plate need to show more in the opposition half in this second half, and they have started on the front foot. They are pushing much higher up the pitch. They have to go for it.
Fernandez effort! That was not far away from finding the far corner of the Boca Juniors net. Fernandez took the strike from about 20 yards out, Andrada looked beaten, but it flashes wide.
Gallardo is still to make a change to his River Plate team, but if things stay like this you would expect that he will make an alteration sooner rather than later. No changes for Boca either.
- 2nd Half
The second half is under way! Boca Juniors have a 1-0 lead over River Plate in this Copa Libertadores final second leg.
What did you make the first half at the Santiago Bernabeu? How do River Plate hit back in the second half? Might Boca Juniors rue not taking more of their chances? Tweet me!
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: River Plate 0-1 Boca Juniors (2-3 on aggregate). Benedetto's goal is the difference between the two teams at the break. And Boca probably deserve to be ahead, on the balance of things.
What an exhilarating breakaway that was from Boca Juniors to take the lead. They have showed much more composure in this first half and that showed in the way Benedetto took the goal.
Two minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the first half.
- GoalDarío BenedettoBoca Juniors
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! River Plate 0 Boca Juniors 1 (44 mins - Dario Benedetto). A breakthrough! It's Boca Juniors who have taken the lead on the night and in the tie! Benedetto's touch slipped him past Maidana and he finished with aplomb past Armani who was left stranded by his absent defence!
Almost a goalkeeping gaffe! Andrada was caught way off his line, but River Plate just couldn't make the most of the opportunity that the goalkeeper handed their way! The cut back pass evaded everyone in white.
Perez in pain! The River Plate man is writhing around on the ground after a late tackle from Perez. The reaction suggests that was a bad one. Was it maybe a stamp rather than a tackle?
River counter attack! Armani's punch launches a River Plate break, with Montiel getting down the left side. He had options in the middle, but couldn't pick out a teammate with his low cross.
Villa forces the save! That was another opportunity for Boca Juniors to open the scoring! The cross from Villa was a good one and Benedetto was in the middle ready to convert, but Armani makes a punched clearance!
Just to recap - there is no away goals rule here. So despite the fact that River Plate scored twice at La Bombanera in the first leg, it's just a flat 2-2 scoreline at this stage.
You can sense just how nervous both teams are. Boca Juniors are dealing with the tension slightly better than River Plate, but it still feels like a mistake could be made at any moment.
Replays show just how close Nandez was to opening the scoring for Boca Juniors. The ball actually skimmed through his hair, and he doesn't have a lot of hair! Another inch would have done it.
Boca Juniors seem to be first to every second ball. There's a bite to their play that is lacking in the River Plate team. But, of course, that can change over the course of a match like this.
You get the feeling that after a cagey start at the Santiago Bernabeu this match is beginning to open up. There is more space in behind the two defences for the attackers to exploit.
River Plate have looked shaky at the back in this first half, but their defenders deserve credit for ensuring Boca didn't take the lead moments ago. They threw themselves at the shot from Perez!
So close! Inches away from being a Boca Juniors opener. The freekick hits the wall, but falls to Perez. His shot takes a deflection, but Nandez just couldn't jump high enough to head into the empty net.
We've been waiting a while for this freekick to be taken. It feels like a big moment in this match, in this final. It's just about central, 20 yards out from the River Plate goal.
- Yellow cardLeonardo PonzioRiver Plate
Ponzio enters the book for that tackle on Nandez and he's not happy. He has a case, to be fair.
Freekick on the edge of the box! What an opportunity for Boca Juniors. River Plate played themselves into trouble, but Ponzio is penalised for a tackle on Nandez. Replays show he might have won the ball cleanly!
Maidana needs to take a moment to gather himself because some of his tackles and his clearances have been pretty rash so far. The River Plate centre back is panicking when the ball comes near him.
Boca Juniors will be pretty pleased with how this opening 25-minute spell has gone. River Plate have seen plenty of the ball, but they have done next to nothing with it.
Izquierdoz was trying to make the case to the referee that he was being held as the freekick was slung into the box, but he's having none of it. The ref is allowing a lot to go, it must be said.
That's just foolish! Villa wasn't really going anywhere down the left wing, but Maidana comes across and gives away the foul. That was unnecessary. The freekick comes to nothing, though.
River Plate look rather vulnerable at the back. That's a few times that they have panicked when clearing a Boca Juniors cross into the penalty area. They need to calm down.
What an atmosphere inside the Santiago Bernabeu. This is renowned as one of the best football stadiums on the planet, but it has never before witnessed something like this.
The River Plate team this evening, just in case you missed it...
Nice corner kick routine! Fernandez might have done better with that. The corner kick was played low, on the ground, to the corner of the six yard box, but Fernandez shoots over.
Boca Juniors are standing of River Plate as they zip the passes around the opposition half. Ponzo is taking it upon himself to pull the strings from a deeper position than he normally plays.
Of course, the fact that this match was moved to Madrid has caused some controversy in the sport. It could set a precedent that many see as worrying for the future of football.
River Plate have seen more of the ball in the opening 15 minutes, but it's Boca Juniors who have had the two best opportunities to score. They have been the only two opportunities to score.
Big chance for Perez! From the resulting corner, Boca Juniors have an opportunity to open the scoring! The ball dropped to Perez at the back post, but his effort is straight at Armani!
Almost an own goal! Very close to a calamity. Maidana's sliced clearance at the near post scoops up and almost catches out Armani. River Plate were relieved to watch that flash over.
Pavon has started this match well. He looks lively, which is quite remarkable given that he suffered a hamstring injury in the first leg. He has made the Boca Juniors team for tonight, though.
The match has been well contested and the intensity is high, but there hasn't been much in the way of goalscoring opportunities. Armani in the River Plate hasn't even touched the ball yet.
The camera pans to Tevez on the Boca Juniors bench. The former Manchester City forward is no longer the force he once was, but he made quite the impression coming on as a sub in the first leg.
River Plate have probably edged the contest in the opening few minutes. More of the play has been in the Boca Juniors half than the River Plate half. A hotly contested match so far.
River freekick! Martinez sends a set piece delivery into the Boca Juniors penalty area from the left side. It was a decent cross, but Izquierdoz was on hand to turn it behind for a corner.
The referee has already allowed some late tackles and fouls to go. Magallan probably should have been booked for a late challenge there, but he gets away with it. Referee being lenient.
Oh boy. We are finally under way. Football matches don't get much bigger, more interesting than this. Who do you view as the favourite? Keep in mind it's 2-2 from the first leg.
- 1st Half
The match is under way! It's River Plate against Boca Juniors in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final.
After two weeks of waiting, after everything that has happened, kick off is just seconds away!
Of course, it's 2-2 from the first leg. That's the scoreline as it stands. That has almost been forgotten about in the past few weeks given all that has happened.
An opening ceremony! A national anthem! This feels like a big occasion, because it is. This could be a special event.
Perez starts! He was the player who ended up going to hospital before the second leg having got glass in his eye on the battered bus. He's back in action and starts for Boca this evening.
Fifth time lucky! Okay, so here we are again. This will be the FIFTH time that they have attempted to play these two Copa Libertadores final legs. We're in a different city, in a different continent, now, but it seems (I don't want to jinx it) that this time it will be played.
