Goals from Adriano and Ivan Cordoba gave Internazionale a 2-0 win at Empoli in the first leg of their Coppa Italia quarter-final on Tuesday. Brazilian Adriano finished off Zlatan Ibrahimovic's long ball after 71 minutes before substitute Cordoba headed home for the holders in injury time.

Serie A leaders Inter, who have won the cup for the last two seasons, had the best chance of the first half when Patrick Vieira's header was cleared off the line by Empoli defender Lino Marzoratti.

Inter, who hammered Messina 5-0 on aggregate in the last round, included Saudi Arabia-bound Luis Figo in a strong line-up in a relaxed post-Christmas game.

Sampdoria host Chievo AS Roma face Parma in Wednesday's first legs while Serie B strugglers Arezzo visit Milan in their quarter-final first leg on Thursday.
