Denis Law, Smalling and Why Always Me? Five classic Manchester derbies
The sides meet on Sunday.
Here, Press Association Sport takes a look at five classic Manchester derby encounters.
Manchester United 0-1 Manchester City, April 1974
A late Denis Law goal against his former club in a bad-tempered game condemned United to relegation from the top flight.
Law’s backheeled goal was one of the final touched of his career. A pitch invasion in the latter stages of the game prevented the final five minutes from being played, but the result still stood. United returned to Division One after just one season in the second tier.
Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United, November 1993
City went into half time leading 2-0 with two goals from Niall Quinn and United’s bad week, following their exit from the Champions League, looked set to continue.
United came back in the second half with goals from Eric Cantona, who scored twice and a winner from Roy Keane in his first Manchester derby with just three minutes left on the clock. United did not look back and went on to win the double
Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City, September 2009
City had come from behind three times in the match, thanks to a first-half Gareth Barry strike and two goals from Craig Bellamy but were unable to hold on to the point. Wayne Rooney had opened the scoring after two minutes, and Darren Fletcher then found the net twice in the second half for the home side before Owen’s last-minute winner.
Manchester United 1-6 Manchester City, October 2011
Under manager Roberto Mancini, City inflicted United’s worst defeat in 56 years when they won 6-1 at Old Trafford.
Mario Balotelli bagged the first two goals – bringing out his ‘why always me?’ t-shirt in the process – either side of half-time as United were reduced to 10 men early in the second half. Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko – who scored twice – and David Silva all added their names to the score sheet in the drubbing.
Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United, April 2018
City would have been confirmed as Premier League champions had they beaten their United, and looked set to do so before the visitors fought back in the second half from two goals down to claim a dramatic victory.
