Updated 10/07/2016 at 20:27 GMT
Riot police used tear gas and water cannon as violence erupted outside the Euro 2016 fan zone at the Eiffel Tower.
Ugly scenes broke out when fans were turned away from a packed fan zone before kick-off.
Objects were thrown and set on fire, while some fans attempted to break through security barriers.
Riot police responded with volleys of tear gas, while a water cannon was deployed.
The fan zone reached its capacity of around 90,000 two hours before kick-off, meaning entry was barred to thousands of fans due to overcrowding concerns.
