PAYET DECIDES MATCH WITH LATE TOUCH OF MAGIC

With two minutes left Dimitri Payet of West Ham let rip with an unstoppable rocket into the top corner to deny Romania a draw, and put tournament hosts and favourites France on course for a 2-1 victory to start the tournament. The West Ham man's shot was absolutely picture perfect, and Payet wept openly as he was subbed off after scoring.

PENALTY FOR ROMANIA! AND THE EQUALISER!

A clumsy challenge by Patrice Evra on Bogdan Stancu gave Romania a spot kick in the 65th minute - and Stancu pulled himself up to slot home, sending Hugo Lloris the wrong way.

GIROUD NODS HOME FOR FIRST GOAL OF TOURNAMENT

Olivier Giroud produced a brilliant leap to beat Romania goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu to a Dimiti Payet cross, and glanced the ball goalwards with his head in the 58th minute to put France ahead against a plucky Romanian side. The goal made up for a series of misses from the Arsenal player earlier in the game.

GIROUD MISSES HEADER ON STROKE OF HALF-TIME

France and Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud missed a few half-chances during the opening 45 minutes - then in the dying seconds of the first period headed over with a genuine opportunity to open the scoring, as he nodded Dimitri Payet's shot over the bar.

FRANCE HIT THE POST EARLY ON

Atletico Madrid superstar Atletico Griezmann initially failed to meet a fine 14th-minute cross from Bacary Sagna, but as the defence failed to clear the danger he got his head to the ball - only for it to come back off the upright.

LLORIS SPARES FRANCE'S BLUSHES

Just six minutes into the opening match France almost let in a goal against Romania, with Nicolae Stanciu's corner falling to striker Bogdan Stancu in the six-yard box. He managed to poke it goalwards, only for Tottenham goalie and France captain Hugo Lloris to hook the ball away from the goal-line.
