GOOD ROUND

Wales and Joe Ledley

Sometimes, football can become awfully serious. Players are put under such pressure that it simply can't be much fun even playing the game, and an international tournament turns into a place where fun and enjoyment are both lost amid the noise of everything.
Not Wales, though. They're at their first international tournament for 58 years, and they're taking it all in. They're having – get this – a good time. The pictures of their players celebrating after defeating Northern Ireland were enjoyable enough, signs that these were men who understood the basic fragility of what they're achieving, and that it could basically be taken away from them at any stage and the odds are against them winning their next game, against Belgium.
Perhaps other teams have a nominated dancer, as Joe Ledley seems to be for the Welsh, but we don't hear about it if they do. So here's to Wales, enjoying themselves while others worry and feel pressure.

Antonio Conte

Yeah yeah, masterminding a brilliant tactical victory over the defending champions is great and everything, well done Antonio. But booting the ball away in frustration after a misplaced pass, that celebration, clambering on top of the dugout...that's the real quiz.

Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri

Something of a notorious presence on Twitter, it looks like Italian scribe Tancredi Palmeri rather enjoyed Italy's win over Spain. We do hope he's not saying anything rude there, though.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Now, Portugal's most sculpted walking ego has not often delighted us all with his statements during this tournament, but call Good Round, Bad Round a sentimental old softie, we did enjoy this from the great man after Portugal knocked Croatia out.
"Of course, I am happy that we beat Croatia. However, I couldn’t celebrate on the field because my brother Luka Modric was crying. It is my duty to comfort my brother," Ronaldo said.
Lovely.

Lars Lagerback

Even before Monday night, Iceland co-coach Lars Lagerback was a pretty popular man back home. Indeed, the Swede's standing in his country of employment was so high that 30 people voted for him in the country's recent presidential election, the slight snag of course being that he wasn't standing in said election. People siding with something different to what was promised to them in a public vote, you say? It'd never happen in England.
Alas, the votes were invalid because they didn't choose one of the candidate on the ballot, but hey – it's better than the person who supposedly, erm, 'voided their bowels' on their paper back in the 2009 election, in protest after the national financial crash.

BAD ROUND

Steve McClaren

Oh Schteve...
You can actually pinpoint the second when his heart rips in half.

Gudmundur Benediktsson

Last week we brought you news of Gudmundur Benediktsson, the Icelandic commentator who, shall we say, rather enjoyed his country's winning goal against Austria that confirmed their place at the top of their first round group.
Alas, poor Gudmundur was brought down to earth with gusto this week, after it emerged he's lost his day job. Benediktsson is assistant manager of KR Reykjavik back home – or, at least he was. Things haven't been going swimmingly for KR, so Benediktsson did the decent thing and resigned, along with the rest of their coaching staff.
“From my first day on the job as coach of KR I have focused on the interests of the club as a priority,” said Bjarni Gudjonsson Eggert, the team's manager. “After a bad start to the season I, along with the board, concluded that it is in the interests of the team that I resign. I am grateful to the KR board for having trusted in me for the training team. KR’s future is bright and I am confident that the team will get back to the top, where it belongs, before long.”
All very noble, but it does smell a little like those people who jack in their jobs just so they can watch football all month. Still, in this case, who can blame him?

Chris Gunter's brother

On reflection Marc Gunter, brother of Wales wing-back Chris, might have chosen a better time to get married. Marc's wedding is scheduled for July 7, which when he booked it probably sounded like a terrific time to get married. The only problem being that Wales have done a little better in the tournament than initially thought: that's the day after a potential semi-final, should Gunter and colleagues beat Belgium and make it through. Oh, and the wedding's in Mexico.
“I am sure the wedding will still go ahead,” said Gunter, not exactly reassuring his future sister-in-law. “By hook or by crook I am sure everyone will get to the games and get to the wedding. But I think it will be the first best man’s speech ever on Skype. And I don’t think there would be anyone happier for myself than my family if I wasn’t able to make it [to Mexico].
“The other potential best man, Lee, has followed Wales for about 15 years and there is no way he will be in Mexico if we are still in it. The get-out for Lee was ‘I am doing what you are doing’. So currently my brother is without a best man but I am sure at this moment he is just as happy as me and like the rest of Wales, absolutely over the moon.”
Maybe not absolutely everyone in the wedding party, Chris. But good luck all the same.

Petra Fyde

Spare a thought for this Canadian Facebook user Petra Fyde, who's been getting a few unexpected messages during this tournament. She posted last week:
“At the risk of sounding stupid… Does anyone know why there are a bunch of strange men in my fb inbox with messages saying WILL GRIGGS ON FIRE, YOUR DEFENSE IS PETRA FYDE?????? … What the hell is going on?”
Sounds like Wigan have got themselves a new fan.

Ivan Perisic

If you have a hairstyle this...erm...snazzy, you probably need to win, or else you'll look pretty silly.
