A desperate shot on the half turn from Pasalic is way over the bar and the referee blows up. A fine performance from England all things considered. Their first opening game victory in a European Championship.

Petkovic wins a header as a ball is lumped into the box but Pickford comes out well to gather.
Bellingham fine to carry on and now Sterling will be replaced by Calvert-Lewin.
Bellingham goes down after a nasty clash of heads with Vida and is walked off the field.
Kovacic is replaced by Pasalic in Croatia's last change.
A mistimed cross from perisic has Pickford scrambling back but he gathers just under the far post.
Immediately Bellingham wins two tackles and it leads to Sterling putting a ball over the top for Rashford but it is too firm.
Bellingham comes on to become the youngest ever player in a European Championships, replacing Kane.
Petkovic replaces Rebic for Croatia.
Sterling really should have done better there. A deep fee kick into the box from Trippier was headed back by Mings and time seemed to stop as it dropped for Sterling in the box but on his left foot he blazed high and wide of the target.
Good defending from Kyle Walker keeping himself between the ball and Perisic after a cross dropped dangerous on England's six-yard box.
Brekalo and Vlasic replace Kramaric and Brozovic for Croatia and Rashford replaces Foden for England.
Modric chips a corner to the edge of the box but Brozovic never looked like hitting the target with a volley.
A good curling and dipping effort from Mount but it came down just the wrong side of the crossbar, though in fairness the keeper looked like he would have stopped it.
Brozovic loses the ball and then Mount runs through on goal and blocks the Croatian midfielder's path to the ball and is brought down 25 yards from goal to the right of the D.
Great chance for Rebic. Kovacic shot from 25 yards out and it is blocked by Stones into the striker's path but as Walker and Stones looked to protect the goal he skewed his effort wide.
Foden picks up a yellow card for a pretty minor push and, seemingly inadvertent, stand on Caleta-Car's foot.
Kane is fine to resume action.
Kane smacked against the post after the chance and is down in pain at present.
Great football for England with Foden drifting to the let and linking with Sterling before Mount puts a ball to the back post that looked certain to be knocked in by Kane but Caleta-Car did enough to put off the England captain and he skewed his effort wide.
GOAL FOR ENGLAND! Sterling scored from point blank range after Phillips beat a man from the right flank and then slipped him in.
Grealish is warming up. It will be interesting who he comes on for. Foden would be the most obvious if they are to keep the same shape.
Modric shoots low from 25 yards. Not a great hit but Pickford was very careful to block the ball before gathering.
Good strength from Kane 30 yards out turning him man but he just failed to play in Sterling.
More panicky play, Trippier's headed backpass was only just cleared by Pickford ahead of Rebic. Need to settle down here.
Rebic for the first time getting behind Mings and Stones has to snuff out the danger.
Kovacic brings down Mount in the centre circle and gets a yellow card. Team-mate on team-mate. Memories of Gerrard on Hamann 21 years ago for us older folk.
Bit of a nervous moment as Perisic closed down Mings and it looked for a second like it might loop above Pickford but he gathered comfortably above his head.
No changes for the second half, which Croatia get underway...
Good footage of the cheering drowning out the pre-match booing of the knee.
A decent half from England. Played superbly in the first 20 minutes and came so close to going in front through Phil Foden.
Good challenge from Mings to stop Perisic after the left-sided midfielder was played into the area with some slick passing.
Trippier's effort hits Perisic in the wall.
Sterling races onto a long ball and Caleta-Car covering back handles the ball as the Londoner pushed it past him. This is in Trippier range.
Walker gets down the right flank and tries to win a corner but kicks it out for a goal kick. His distribution has been very poor today. He sometimes looks a Luddite compared to the skills of his team-mates.
Sterling with a driving diagonal run from the left flank and he plays a ball into Foden's feet on the edge of the box. Foden goes down but correctly no foul is given.
A much more even contest now. Not that surprising as England cannot play at the pace they like to for all the game in this weather.
First chance for Croatia, Vrsaljko beats Trippier and puts a cross in that falls to Perisic at the far post but he shoots tamely wide.
A quick throw sees the ball bouncing invitingly for Sterling to strike from 25 yards out but he is well wide of the target.
Croatia look shaken, Gvardiol has a lot of time to put in a cross but it sails way behind the goal.
Modric plays a nice one two and then goes down over Trippier's leg but the ref waves play on.
Kane and Mount combine to put Sterling behind the Croatian defence but his attempted scoop to the far post is easily cleared.
Phillips with another shot on goal after he hassled Kovacic off the ball but the referee correctly gave a foul.
Lovely scooped ball from Trippier and Kane almost gets a header on goal but he was just offside.
Phillips is brought down 35 yards from goal. Too far out for a strike you would think.
Croatia struggling to play their sick football and England dominating possession.
A fine start from England. Brozovic just hassled into trouble and gives a throw in away 25 yards from his goal.
Kalvin Phillips shoots at goal from the edge of the box but Livakovic sees the ball all the way and parries it to safety
Great play from Sterling on the left flank. He gets the ball into Mount who plays in Kane and the ball comes back to the City striker but Caleta-Car puts it out for a corner.
Off the post! Foden comes so close to scoring for England, Sterling played the ball through to him on the right flank and as we have seen so many times for City he cut on his left foot and shot low at the far post but though the keeper was beaten it bounced out to safety.
Modric showing how dangerous he can be with a number of little touches in the final third of the field before the referee gets in the way and he gets an uncompeted drop ball to continue with a move snuffed out.
Both sides enjoying getting a touch of the ball early on, rather than looking to attack the opposition.
England get the game underway...
A few boos for the knee but more cheers. About as good a result as could be expected.
Anthems done. Only one nervous moment before the game now.
The Croatians surprisingly all donning black tracksuit jackets in 29 degrees temperature.
The players are in the tunnel, ready to come out onto the field.
Nice argument for playing 4 at the back.
It is worth remembering Trippier was rated the best full back in Spain this season. A bit of an overreation with him coming in I think. With Mings at left centre back (quite possibly the weak link), an experienced player at the top level next to him is understandable. And also his set pieces are a plus.
On Trippier's inclusion, Southgate said: "Experienced player and good one-on-one defender to stop crosses coming in. WIth two boys out of the team we wanted that experience."
It doesn't seem like it has been mentioned enough that this is a repeat of the 2018 semi-final. England have six players in their xi who started that game, Croatia five.
Nice touch this. Purest of Gazza vibes. Though he didn't play that well in the first games of the 1990 or 1996 tournaments, but let's forget that.
Twelve players on the bench and Sancho not among them. That's another surprise. England is full of forwards who like the ball to feet, probably no one in the squad is better at making runs behind the defence.
That Croatian midfield does give some pause for thought. On a hot day in London, you can see Modric pulling strings and giving their England counterparts the run around in these areas. As for Trippier at left back.....in Gareth we must trust. I guess...
And this is the side who will face England at Wembley in an hour.
Here is the side Gareth Southgate has chosen for the long-awaited match.
