Wayne Rooney became England’s all-time top goalscorer, netting the second - and his 50th from 106 national team appearances - in England’s 2-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win over Switzerland.
The Manchester United striker had equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s record in the 6-0 win over San Marino on Saturday, but claimed it for himself by converting a penalty kick following Harry Kane’s opener.
The result at Wembley preserved Roy Hodgson’s side 100 per cent Euro 2016 qualifying record, with the aim of going through the entire campaign without dropping a single point now an entirely plausible one.
England laboured for much of the match, with Switzerland largely holding their own - but the hosts looked more dangerous following the second half introduction of Kane, giving them a presence as the focal point of the attack.
Hodgson’s side now face just two more qualification games - against Estonia and Lithuania - before next summer’s European Championships, with the national team in good shape ahead of the tournament.
KEY EVENTS
10’ - FREE HEADER FOR CAHILL! Nice idea from the set-piece from England, with the ball crossed to Cahill about 10 yards out. But he can only draw the diving save from Sommer in the Swiss goal.
17’ - ROONEY SHOT ON GOAL! The Manchester United forward is played into the channel down the left side, and tries to curl a side-footed shot past Sommer - but it drifts past the far post.
19’ - MILNER SHOT SAVED! Rooney plays in the Liverpool midfielder in behind the Switzerland backline, he gets his low shot away but Sommer is behind the effort and makes the save.
31’ - HART HAD TO BE ALERT! Switzerland are so close to being through on goal, with Drmic slotting through Shaqiri but the England goalkeeper comes rushing off his line to smother the shot.
51’ - ROONEY HEADER AT GOAL! Oxlade-Chamberlain does really well to get to the byline and clips the cross into the striker, but he can't beat Sommer with the header. He was backtracking.
54’ - ROONEY SHOT FROM DISTANCE! The Manchester United striker takes control of the ball 25 yards out and strikes at goal but Sommer is equal to it, and makes the save. That was some effort.
56’ - HART IS CALLED UPON TO MAKE THE SAVE! Xhaka meets a corner kick delivery to divert a header on goal, but the Manchester City goalkeeper is on hand to make the save at his near post.
68’ - GOAL! England 1 Switzerland 0: Something has actually happened! England have taken the lead. Shaw crosses the ball low into the box, and Kane smashes home the finish at the back post.

79’ - MILNER SAVES THE DAY! Klose barges through the centre of the England team, from front to back, but Milner is on hand to make the last ditch challenge to prevent the defender from having a shot at goal.
84’ - PENALTY KICK TO ENGLAND! Sterling displays some nice skill inside the penalty area and is brought down but Xhaka. I wonder who will be taking this?
85’ - GOAL! England 2 Switzerland 0: He's a record breaker! Rooney steps up, fires the spot kick into the top corner and he is England's all-time top goalscorer with 50 goals for his country.

KEY STATS
Wayne Rooney became England’s top goalscorer of all time, with 50 goals from 106 international appearances.
England remain the only side to have a 100% record in the Euro 2016 qualifiers (played eight, won eight, drawn zero, lost zero).
Harry Kane has now scored in three of his four appearances for England.

TALKING POINT
Should Harry Kane start up front alongside Wayne Rooney? England were struggling before the second half introduction of the Spurs striker, but Kane gave them more presence in the final third - with the national team more comfortable with him on the pitch. Kane took his goal well too, so is it time that Hodgson started incorporating him into his starting lineup? He has three goals in his four England appearances, he could hardly have done any more to force his way into the reckoning.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Luke Shaw (England): Rooney claimed the headlines for himself, but Luke Shaw was the best England player on the pitch. His improvement this season has been marked - for club and country - providing an excellent assist for Kane’s opening goal. He has the left-back spot nailed down ahead of the European Championships.
