Free kick from Sneijder flashes just wide!
We have two added minutes here.
GOAL Netherlands! This time is is six as Huntelaar finishes from Clasie’s pass.
Robben streams forward and passes to Depay whose shot is blocked by Kolinko going the wrong way. Close to six!
The match is over and the Netherlands could close to within three points of the Czech Republic and Iceland, who play one another later.
FIVE MINUTES REMAINING: Great save from Kolinko from Huntelaar’s chest and volley!
A real bizz around the ground now every time Robben gets the ball. Almost expecting another moment of magic.
Robben has been fabulous tonight and could easily have had a hat-trick. May still...
GOAL Netherlands! And is Robben again who runs at the defence before cutting inside on his left foot and rifling his shot past Kolinko
Netherlands sub: van Persie off for Wijnaldum
That is Jeffrey Bruma’s first goal for his country.
GOAL Netherlands! And it’s Bruma who turns in Sneijder’s corner from van Persie’s flick on.
Shot from Depay stopped by Kolinko. Really should have scored after jinking through nicely.
Latvia have stuck to their guns well in this second half and not capitulated. Laizans shoots on goal and Cillessen takes fairly comfortably.
Latvia force a rare free kick. Cauna plays it in and Bruma heads out for a corner.
POSSESSION: Netherlands 73%-27% Latvia
Foul by De Vrij on A. Visnakovs and he goes into the book.
Latvia sub: Rudnevs on for Visnakovs
A shot from Robben that proves he is human as it flies over the bar.
Netherlands sub: Memphis Depay comes on for Affelay.
Another great run and shot from Robbena nd it’s just wide of the post! Great effort.
Just aimless balls forwards every time Latvia get possession. They really don’t know what to do.
CORNERS: Netherlands 10-1 Latvia
Cross from Van der Wiel and he forces another conrer for the Netherlands.
Cauna slams straight into the back of van Persie and feigns injury himself. Nothing given either way.
Again Robben jinks into the box but his shot is blocked by Kurakins.
Huntelaar finds van Persie but it’s slightly behind him and his neat flick is blocked in front of goal.
You may question the quality of the opposition but there’s no doubt that Robben is shining brighter than anyone else on the pitch.
Again Robben goes past players as if they’re not there and his cross is off the post!
Robben takes and it cannons off the bar! What a player.
Robben tries to jink his way through and is fouled by Laizans on the edge of the box. Yellow card...
The question is, can Cauna take the heat? Sorry, couldn’t resist that one…
Latvia sub: Zjuzins off for Cauna
POSSESSION: Netherlands 75%-25% Latvia
Not even Robben is quick enough to keep a long ball from Willems in play but he almost does! He’s on fire tonight.
Cross from Van der Wiel is too close to Kolinko and he claims easily.
The Dutch winning the ball at will already and they force another corner header from De Vrij is wide.
You can sense the fear in the Latvian players every time Robben gets the ball. Surely already the man of the match award is his.
The pressure still on Latvia to qualify for the top three and make the play-offs but that must surely wait for another day now.
Latvia sub: Ikaunieks replaced by Laizans.
We’re back underway here in Amsterdam. Could be a torrid half for Latvia.
HALF TIME: Netherlands 3-0 Latvia
Robben caught offside. Just the one added minute here.
A rare break for Latvia but Visnakovs fires it straight at Cillessen.
STAT: That goal moves Huntelaar level on 37 goals with Denis Bergkamp as Holland’s third highest goal scorer.
GOAL NETHERLANDS! Latvia again give it away cheaply, Affelay crosses to Huntelaar and he slots home at the near post. Game over surely.
Been all hands to the pump for Latvia tonight. Just the one chance of note.
Another great run from Robben but the angle is tight and Kolinko saves.
ATTEMPTS ON TARGET: Netherlands 5-0 Latvia
Well that really was a moment of genius and even at this early stage you can see him getting at least one more.
GOAL Netherlands! And it’s that man Robben with a fantastic finish! He plays a 1-2 with van Persie and bends a swerving finish past Kolinko. Brilliant.
Great ball by Sneijder finds van Persie at the far post but he can’t quite get enough on his header and Kolinko falls on the ball to make the save. Good chance.
Robben again causing mayhem down the right. Affelay’s shot is blocked and then the keeper just gets to the ball before Huntelaar.
Another woeful effort from Sneijder well into the stands. Too much polish on those boots! Perhaps carried away with that goal against Mexico.
Robben like an eel with the ball at his feet, snaking this way and that. Such a joy to watch and Latvia can’t get the ball off him!
Robben forces yet another corner but van Persie is penalised for a foul in the box. Looked innocuous.
DANGEROUS ATTACKS: Netherlands 13-3 Latvia
Kurakins again on Van der Wiel and he is VERY luck to escape another yellow and receive his marching orders. Latvia should be down to ten.
Poor challenge from Kurakins on Robben and now ke goes into the book. Very late and into the knee.
Awful dead ball attempt from Sneijder balloons into the stands! Would need three goals on top of each other to find the net. Row Z effort.
Affelay caught by Zjuzins and it’s an obvious yellow card.
ATTEMPTS ON TARGET: Netherlands 3-0 Latvia
A third shot from Affelay and Kolinko is forced to parry it away for a corner.
It looked innocuous for Blind, who was clutching his knee. Would be disastrous news for United if he’s out with all their defensive problems.
It is the end for Daley Blind who is replaced by Clasie.
Well Blind has not recovered from that knock and has limped off for treatment.
Great chance for Sabala and he heads well wide with his chance!
Blind playing the holding midfield role tonight just ahead of the back four. He’s been a bright spark in an otherwise poor season for United and scored against Mexico last week.
Good defending from Blind to snuff out the danger and he gingerly gets to his feet with Visnakovs all over him.
Decent lay-off from van Persie and Affelay’s shot is saved by Kolinko.
Robben said that even a 10-0 win would not solve their problems tonight. Looks like he’s in the mood for that kind of scoreline.
Robben dancing past defenders at will already. Going to be a torrid night for the Latvian left back.
Again Robben cuts inside from the right so easily and his shot is possibly deflected just wide. A goal kick is given though.
DANGEROUS ATTACKS: Netherlands 4-0 Latvia
The Dutch not looking like a side short of confidence so far. Moving the ball very nicely early on.
Luis van Gaal could do with that kind of form from RPV for United. Class finish.
Just the start the Netherlands needed and that will calm a lot of nerves, not least those of Guus Hiddink.
GOAL NETHERLANDS! Lovely cross from Robben and Van Persie leaps to plant a header into the bottom corner
POSSESSION: Netherlands 88%-12% Latvia
Robben already looking menacing and his early run and cross set up that chance. He’ll be a problem tonight.
Great effort from Afellay and his shot cannons back off the post!
The Dutch have flown out of the traps, neat passing and pressing, pressing. Latvia haven’t had a touch in the opening minute
Referee Liran Liany of Israel blows the whistle to get us underway here. Netherlands setting up 4-3-3, with Van Persie, Huntelaar and Robben in the advanced roles. Guus Hiddink is 90 minutes away from leaving this job!
FIVE MINUTES TO KICK-OFF.
TEN MINUTES TO KICK-OFF: Latvia have it all to do to take the points tonight. They must end a run of 16 consecutive away defeats stretching back to September 2011.
Because it’s a rainy day in Amsterdam, the match in the Amsterdam Arena will be played under a closed roof. The pitch looks in a perfect condition. It should suit Hiddink's men nicely. Expect goals from the Dutch tonight.
Latvia defender Kaspars Dubra: "[Arjen] Robben, Van Persie, [Wesley] Sneijder, many others – they are world-class players, at another level. But we cannot give up. It is humans who play football, not surnames. Yes there is a significant gap in class but we have to take to the pitch and fight from the first minute until the last one."
Before the friendly 3-2 defeat against Mexico, Hiddink’s side lost 2-0 in Iceland, won 3-1 at home to Kazakhstan and lost 2-1 in the Czech Republic. A win tonight surely is a must.
Guus Hiddink after the friendly loss to Mexico: "We've shown a lot of strength, but we were not conclusive in the final phase. If you get seven or eight chances, you should surely score three. On the first goal everyone was too remote, then followed a series of errors that should not happen at international level."
On paper, this looks routine for the Netherlands, despite their latest slump. Latvia have yet to win in the group, having drawn 0-0 with Kazakhstan and 1-1 against Turkey with a 3-0 home loss to Iceland coming between those results.
So Hiddink has made the call to partner Huntelaar and Van Persie up front together but otherwise the team is as expected. Cryptically, Hiddink has stated that he may quit if the Dutch don’t win tonight, saying he will “take the logical step”. Make of that what you will…
TEAMS: Netherlands: Cillessen; Van der Wiel, Bruma, De Vrij, Willems; Afellay, Blind, Sneijder, Robben; Huntelaar, Van Persie /// Latvia : Kolinko, Dubra, Gabovs, Gorkss, Kurakins, Ikaunieks, Zjuzins, Fertovs, A. Visnakovs, Sabala, E. Visnakovs
This is a massive game for both the Netherlands and Guus Hiddink following last month’s shock 2-0 defeat to Iceland. It leaves them third in the table behind Iceland and the Czech Republic. Team news to follow.
