England are set to make a complaint to UEFA regarding the racist abuse from some home supporters during their 5-1 Euro 2020 qualifying win at Montenegro.
Sterling scored England’s fifth goal of the night, and cupped his ears in a celebration directed towards the home fans, and the Manchester City winger tweeted after the match: "Best way to silence the haters (and yeah I mean racists)," before adding a hashtag which read, “Get some education”.
“It is a shame really because it was a massive team performance at a difficult ground, a difficult place to come,” Sterling said after the match.
“We knew how difficult it would be, we knew it would be hard at times but we stuck together as a team and there were some great performances in there today but then a couple of idiots, mind my language, but a couple of idiots ruin a great night.
“It is a shame we are talking about this to be honest with you, it is 2019 and I think there should be a real punishment for this, not just for the few people being banned.
“It needs to be a collective thing. This stadium holds 15,000 and I think the punishment should be that as a nation your fans are chanting racist abuse so I think it should be the whole stadium can’t watch it.
“Then when that ban is lifted your fans will think twice not to do anything silly like that because they all love football, they all want to be there to support their nation.”
After the match, England manager Gareth Southgate said the matter will be reported to UEFA after he heard chants aimed towards left-back Danny Rose.
Southgate told ITV: "I definitely heard abuse of Danny Rose when he got booked at the end of the game. There's no doubt in my mind that happened and we'll report it to UEFA. It's not acceptable."
Asked if Sterling also experienced abuse – before the forward’s tweet – Southgate added: "I'm not sure about Raheem. I had a quick chat with Danny but I've not had a chance to speak to Raheem.
"I know what I heard. We'll definitely deal with it in the right way and we have to make sure we support our players."
Meanwhile, Callum Hudson-Odoi was making his full England debut in Podgorica on Monday night, with the Chelsea winger labelling the chants "unacceptable".
He told beIN: “I don’t think discrimination should be anywhere, we’re equal. We have to play a fair game and enjoy the moment.
"When you are hearing stuff like that from the fans it’s not right, it’s unacceptable and hopefully UEFA deal with it properly. When I went over there me and Rosey heard it, they were saying ‘ooh ah ah’, monkey stuff.
"We just have to keep our heads, keep a strong mentality, hopefully Rose is okay as well. We’ll have a chat but hopefully UEFA deal with it.
"It’s not right at all. I was enjoying the game as well, and to hear stuff like that is never right. We’ll just take the win and go back home."
On Hudson-Odoi, Southgate added: "It’s unacceptable. I heard it myself on the bench. In this day and age you are ashamed that it can happen, the joy of a young player who has had such a fantastic game to be overshadowed by that is hugely disappointing."
