- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Manchester United 2 Ajax 0. And that’s it. After a difficult week for the city of Manchester and the world in general, Manchester United win their fifth European trophy and are in the Champions League.
Mourinho, Rooney, Zlatan and all preparing for victory. A crucial clearing challenge from Rooney and that could well be it…
The equation simple. Two goals in two minutes and we have extra time. Not looking likely!
Ajax haven’t turned up tonight against a well drilled United. A bit of a shame but nobody can begrudge United given the circumstances.
Four additional minutes here. Barcelona '99 time for Ajax now…
- OffJuan MataManchester United
- OnWayne RooneyManchester United
Man Utd sub: Wayne Rooney comes on to replace Juan Mata. Could be his final appearance.
GREAT TACKLE! Lingard is through on goal but a great last gasp challenge from Sanchez prevents a killer third.
Mourinho animated and Ajax desperate. Another European masterclass tonight and looking close to Champions League football now.
Ajax need to strike now or take a leaf out of United’s Barcelona book. Sadly, they haven’t looked like scoring.
- OffMarcus RashfordManchester United
- OnAnthony MartialManchester United
Man Utd sub: Martial on for Rashford.
Looking like it will be Marcus Rashford to make way for Martial.
- OffJairo RiedewaldAjax
- OnFrenkie de JongAjax
Ajax sub: de Jong on for Riedewald.
Anthony Martial being readied for action so either Carrick or Rooney set to miss out on the action.
Ajax force a corner off Darmian. In it comes, cleared by Smalling and more time ticks by. Ajax preparing a final change, de Jong to come on.
TEN MINUTES REMAINING: Almost now or never time for Ajax as Rashford goes down but no free kick.
- Yellow cardJairo RiedewaldAjax
Riedewald also in the book for protesting.
- Yellow cardJuan MataManchester United
A really poor challenge from Mata on de Ligt and he rightly goes in the book. Ajax players are furious. Studs up. I think they wanted another colour…
Mourinho furious about not getting that penalty and it did look a clumsy one. Possibly just on the edge of the box. Seen them given…
A clumsy challenge from Sanchez in the box looks close to a penalty. Pogba stays on his feet and the rub of the green goes the Ajax way.
- OffHenrikh MkhitaryanManchester United
- OnJesse LingardManchester United
Man Utd sub: Lingard comes on for Mkhitaryan for United.
Mourinho preparing to bring on Lingard for United.
Ziyech strikes it but straight into the wall and United clear. Poor effort.
Creeping towards danger time for Ajax, if not critical. They win a free kick on the edge of the box and this is a great chance to pull one back!
- OffLasse SchöneAjax
- OnDonny van de BeekAjax
Ajax sub: Van de Beek comes on for Schone
Van de Beek preparing to come on for Ajax as Rashford feels he has been caught on the edge of the box. Went down a little easy.
Smalling does just enough to shepherd behind for a corner as Ajax threaten. United clear but remain under pressure…
United have been by far the better side tonight but a goal from Ajax could change the whole dimension of the final. The pressure would be on again.
United 25 minutes away from a fifth European trophy and a place in the Champions League as Ziyech fires well over.
CHANCE! Fellaini should have wrapped it up but plants his header straight at Onona from Pogba's cross.
- Yellow cardAmin YounesAjax
United still quicker and more aggressive into the challenges tonight. Younes goes into the book for a foul on Valencia.
- OffKasper DolbergAjax
- OnDavid NeresAjax
Ajax sub: Neres on to replace Dolberg
Lingard, Martial and Rooney are out warming up for United. Nice fresh legs to be able to call upon but with Fellaini on a yellow, Carrick perhaps the smart call?
A damning statistic for Ajax. Romero is yet to make a meaningful save tonight. Batted down a simple save early on but nothing since.
- Yellow cardJoël VeltmanAjax
Veltman with a foul on Mata and he goes into the book.
Ajax force a corner. In it comes but de Ligt unable to get power on the header and United clear.
If Ajax get one back, it could spread a little panic. United have struggled when leading this season. Do they really need a third? Possibly.
- Yellow cardMarouane FellainiManchester United
A poor challenge from Fellaini on Schone and that’s a simple yellow card for the ref.
That really was a perfectly timed challenge from Sanchez on Rashford. United looking increasingly comfortable on the big stage as they have so many times before.
Now Rashford threatens to break through on goal and it takes a fantastic tackle from Sanchez to prevent a third.
That’s the sixth goal in the tournament from Mkhitaryan and five have been away from home.
- GoalHenrikh MkhitaryanManchester United
GOAL UNITED! And that’s the second they wanted and breathing space. The corner is swung in from Mata and it’s Mkhitaryan with the overhead from close range after Smalling headed goalwards.
United can’t settle for a draw here. They’ve surrendered leads all season long. I think my money is on extra time. AND PENALTIES!
Back underway here at the Friends Arena in Stockholm and plenty of football left in this one. Ajax haven’t turned up so far but will United now sit back and invite pressure? It should be fascinating.
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Manchester United 1 Ajax 0
Good defending from Darmian under a lot of pressure from Traore in the box. The free kick goes his way. One added minute here.
This game has been played in a great spirit with few stoppages so there won’t be too much time added on at the end of this half.
Sanchez almost takes an almighty gamble with Rashford just behind him and almost gets his pocket picked. That would have been embarrassing. The striker would have been in!
United in control of this final approaching the break but ajax need not panic yet. How many times have United been ahead this season and come unstuck late on?
Ajax suddenly finding a little confidence before the break. Traore has been their best player but they need more from Dolberg.
SHOTS ON TARGET: Ajax 1-2 Man Utd
Remember, if this stays level there will be extra time and penalties. Ajax only a goal adrift.
Good tackle from de Ligt on Rashford in the box, really well timed. The United striker stays down but should be okay.
- Yellow cardHenrikh MkhitaryanManchester United
A first yellow card for Mkhitaryan after he catches Riedewald with a silly challenge.
Here's the opening goal.
Half an hour played here and Jose Mourinho will be mighty pleased. All the territory and chances and a goal up, if not bossing possession.
United with just 33% of possession and that’s incredible. They’ve been the dominant side. Sanchez brings down Rashford as that intriguing battle continues.
The Ajax players just haven’t been given the space or time to express themselves. United will now be extremely hard to break down, as is the Mourinho way.
SAVE! A confident run and confident strike from Valencia is batted away from Onona as United seek a second.
A poor foul from Mkhitaryan on Veltman gives Ajax an attacking free kick. In it comes from the right, put behind by Herrera for a corner. Great ball in from Schone.
Still early days here and Ajax now know what they have to do and go at United with their attacking brand of football.
Pogba is the only United player to start every Europa League game and that goal goes to him as it was going on target.
- GoalPaul PogbaManchester United
GOAL UNITED! That’s tough on Ajax. It opened up for Paul Pogba and he took on the shot at goal. It takes a wicked deflection off Sanchez and into the net with Onona going the wrong way.
SAVE! Ajax work it nicely down the left. It’s cut back to Traore from Younes but his shot is batted down by Romero.
Ajax, surprisingly, have had more of the ball. But it’s all been in their own half with United pressing and looking menacing.
POSSESSION: Ajax 55%-45% Man Utd
The story of United’s season has been not turning dominance and chances into goals. They must make this fast start count tonight or they could live to regret it again.
Dolberg and Traore have barely had a touch so far. United bossing this one. Good tempo.
CHANCE! Mata whips in a wicked ball and Fellaini fails to get a clean contact on his header. Should have done better.
A clumsy foul from Rashford on Sanchez and that’s going to be a terrific battle tonight.
An offside flag goes up against Mkhitaryan but Ajax have hardly got out of their own half. Very encouraging for United so far.
Never know what you’re going to get from a young, inexperienced side on such a big occasion. Let’s hope Ajax aren’t overawed. They haven’t settled.
There have been nine goals scored across the last two Europa League finals (an average of 4.5 per game).
United have made a quick start here and Ajax haven’t woken up. No surprise that they’re up for this one.
A fitting feel to this match already with two iconic teams going toe to toe. United have started confidently and win another free kick. In it comes from Blind, headed across from Smalling and Onona claims.
A shame that the minute’s silence was not properly observed. United setting up 4-3-2-1 with Rashford up front. Ajax 4-3-3. The Dutch will go for this, expecting United to be more cagey. It's like a boxing match! Pogba flashes an early shot wide after Onona collides with Veltman...
- 1st Half
KICK-OFF! Referee Damir Skomina blows the whistle to get us underway here at aptly named Friends Arena. Extra time and penalties if necessary tonight. Let’s hope it’s a good match.
FIVE MINUTES TO KICK-OFF: The players are in the tunnel and making their way out onto the pitch. There will, of course, be a minute’s silence following Monday’s shocking events in Manchester.
TEN MINUTES TO KICK-OFF: Extra time? Just two of the last 16 UEFA Cup/Europa League finals have been decided by a penalty shootout; 10 have been won in 90 minutes with a further four being decided in extra time
Jose Mourinho has won all six meetings with Ajax as a manager; those previous matches have all come in the Champions League with Real Madrid.
Peter Bosz: "We only have a chance of beating Manchester United if we play our own game, which we have developed this season and which I like to call the Ajax way of playing. It is romantic but it all depends on how strong they are. We are dealing with two different styles and we will see which style of playing comes out on top."
Lovely words from 'The King'
He's never lost a European final before...
Ajax are a team to be feared tonight. Young, hungry and up for the challenge. United beware!
Will this young man be United's hero tonight?
This may not be the Champions League but these teams are two giants of the European game. This match really matters for a number of reasons.
And here’s how Peter Bosz's Ajax line up for tonight’s showpiece.
And the teams are in! Here’s the side that Jose Mourinho has selected to lift the one trophy missing from that illustrious cabinet.
Easy to forget that this is only a football match tonight after the shocking events of Monday night in Manchester. Let’s hope it’s a good one to put a few smiles back on faces.
