Very poor from United, in truth, as they mustered just two shots on target against the unfancied Ukrainians all night. Zlatan Ibrahimovic's winner wasn't pretty either, but Jose Mourinho won't mind, as United get on the board in the Europa League. Fenerbahce's win over Feyenoord sees them sit top of Group A, but United are now hot on their heels ahead of the meeting between the two sides next up. Thanks for joining us. Full report and reaction to follow on site. Goodbye.

FT: Manchester United 1-0 Zorya Luhansk. Not convincing at all, but job done for United.

Pogba is ambitious in having a go from that range, but gets it all wrong and drags his strike well wide.

Mykyta Kamenyuka earns himself a yellow card for kicking out at Rashford. Three minutes of added time here.

SAVE! Ibrahimovic curls it over the wall, but Shevchenko is across to save easilly to his left.

Rafael, who hasn't really put a foot wrong all evening, fouls Martial right on the edge of the box. Ibrahimovic range this.

Zorya break again, but the final ball is lacking when it really counts. United still very open at the back.

CLOSE! From resulting corner, Rooney picks out Fellaini, who volleys over off his shin!

On the counter, Rooney should play in Rashford, but the pass is over-hit. Had to do better there. The ball finds Rooney again, he picks out Ibrahimovic, but his header is deflected wide.

Mikhail Sivakov pulls the ball back into the dangerzone, but Rooney is on hand to hack the ball clear.

A better team would maybe have caused more problems for United tonight. Bailly forced to make a last-ditch tackle, even though he is on a booking.

Final change for the visitors, as Artem Gordienko comes on in place of Chaykovsky.

Poor from substitute Lapartia, as he curls the ball harmlessly over the top of Romero's goal.

Clumsy from Fellaini, as he concedes a free-kick right on the edge of the box. Danger here.

Second change for Zorya as veteran Jaba Lipartia replaces Ljubenovic.

Doesn't look like the floodgates are about to open. United are still misplacing their passes and Zorya defending well.

Double change for Manchester United as Mata and Fosu-Mensah make way for Ashley Young and Anthony Martial.

Still questions to be answered...

At least they admit it...

They all count, especially in this situation, but United's goal certainly had an element of fortune to it. Fosu-Mensah drilled a cutback at Rooney, who had dropped back into a good position, but the skipper couldn't adjust himself quickly enough, the ball just bounced off him, into the gorund, looped up into the air, and Ibrahimovic climbed highest to head into the net from close range.

GOAL!!! Manchester United 1-0 Zorya Luhansk. Ibrahimovic heads opener, but it wasn't pretty.

ROONEY TIME! Here comes the skipper, replacing Lingard. Can he drag United over the line here?

SAVE! First shot on target all game, and it is for the visitors! Paulinho curls one at goal, but Romero gets two hands to it and beats the ball away.

Fellaini and Paulinho having an almighty tussle on the right. Fellaini penalised for handball. Free-kick for the visitors.

One too many dangerous challenges from Bailly earns him the game's first caution. Changes are afoot for United.

Rafael again with the interception with Fosu-Mensah on the charge. Mata whips the cross into the middle, but Shevchenko is out to gather.

Attacking change from the visitors, with Paulinho replacing Kulach. They are not here for the draw. United are there for the taking!

Bailly again has to race across to cut out a through pass from Olexandr Karavayev, with Petryak again after it.

Pogba and Ibrahimovic try to link up, but again the move breaks down. United have to do so much better here. Passing is so slack.

Lingard looks to drill a cross into the near post, but nobody is making the dart into the area. Easy for Shevchenko to gather.

Fellaini has space in the box, cuts onto his left, but the shot is blocked. Never really looked convincing.

Fellaini is fortunate to escape a yellow card as he pulls down Petryak as the Zorya trickster sped clear of the Belgium international.

Rashford and Lingard have switched flanks in this half, but they have not made any inroads yet.

CHANCE! Awful from Rojo, as he gives the ball away and fails to track back. Ball into the middle looks set for Ljubenovic, but he cannot stretch far enough to connect.

Poor from Pogba as he gives the ball away lazily. Zorya break, but the linesman's flag denies them.

Pattern of the game is no different. United with all of the ball, with 11 defenders ahead of them.

We are back under way here. No changes for either side.

Half-time scores

What was all that about? The Leicester result at the weekend was supposed to have reinvigorated United, but they have looked toothless, flat and severely lacking in ingenuity. Marcus Rashford's thunderous effort that came back off the underside of the crossbar is the only time United have looked like breaking the deadlock. Zorya have defended in numbers, but United have to find more to earn the three points they need.

HT: Manchester United 0-0 Zorya Luhansk. Uninspiring and little action of any note as hosts look short of ideas.

Some entertainment.

Zorya with a rare foray forward, but Chris Smalling has no problem dealing with that.

Whipped ball into the middle looks destined for Fellaini's head, but for some reason he ducks out of it. Pogba picks up loose ball, but cannot do anything with it.

Fellaini gets up to meet Mata's corner, heads it down, into the ground, but it bounces over.

BLOCK! Twice Rafael comes to Zorya's rescue, blocking a header from Lingard, before clearing a low Mata cross out for a corner.

Frustration grows around Old Trafford as another move breaks down. Mourinho won't be happy with this...

CHANCE! Pogba whips the ball into the middle, slightly behind Mata, who cannot direct it on target.

Such a slow tempo to the game. All the counter-attacking vigour from the visitors has dwindled as they set in for a defensive effort.

United continue to apply the pressure as Pogba, Mata and Lingard all look for ways through this resilient Zorya rearguard, but at present the visitors continue to stand firm. United look lost for ideas...

Not creating the chances they'd like...

United still with all of the ball, but they just cannot work an opening. Pogba is playing very far forward, but is unable to influence proceedings.

Neat play from Tim Fosu-Mensah and Rashford works space down the right, but Rashford's centre is cut out.

Ibrahimovic lines-up a free-kick from distance, but hammers it straight into the wall. Very quiet around the ground as United continue to struggle.

Selection slip-up?

The tables are turned as Mata tries to find Pogba looking a searching pass but, again, it's overcooked as Zorya 'keeper Shevchenko races off his line to gather.

Very impressive from the visitors. They are certainly not overawed by the occasion here. United just going sideways and back. Remind you of anyone?

Eric Bailly is fortunate to escape a yellow card for a very high, dangerous foot. Could have been nasty.

Rashford and Lingard are really stretching the play, but United are not getting them on the ball enough, getting the defenders turning.

Zorya still frustrating United here. They still are willing to get bodies forward, and have plenty of pace.

All United now. Lingard starting to get involved, with Mata a threat too. Ibrahimovic not happy with some of the Zorya antics.

WOODWORK! Thunderous effort from Rashford comes down of the underside of the crossbar, bounces on the line and out. Corner from Mata had landed at the youngster's feet on the edge of the box, and my word did he wallop that! So unlucky.

CLOSE! Better from United as they work the ball well to Ibrahimovic. The Swede has an age to line the shot up, but it is deflected over. Oleksiy Shevchenko was scrambling across his goal to get to that as it looped over.

Elsewhere in Group A...

80 per cent possession for United so far, but they are too slow with it. Hosts haven't forced a save yet.

Raking pass from Pogba plays in Lingard down the right, the local lad uses his pace to race clear, crosses into the middle, but it is too high for Rashford and the danger passes.

Mata takes a hit but is not awarded the free-kick. Seems to be limping out of that. United having to do plenty of defending.

Zorya are not here to defend! They are counter attacking in numbers and causing problems. Chris Smalling has to beat Vladyslav Kulach to the ball to head clear after another dangerous move.

Ibrahimovic flicks the ball over his header into the path of Lingaard on the gallop, but he cannot control and the ball is cleared.

Ibrahimovic looks to exert his strength on the Zorya backline with a bundling run down the left and it takes the effort of two players to halt him, with the visitors hacking the ball out of play for a throw.

Plenty of possession for United now, but they cannot create an opening. Mata gets a cross in but it is easily cleared.

Fellaini again the target in the box, but he cannot find the target with his header. Marcus Rashford starting to stretch his legs on the right.

Corner for United aims for the head of Marouane Fellaini, but he is beaten to it in the air.

CHANCE! And it is for the visitors. Neat play down the left plays in Ivan Petryak, who pulls it back to the onrushing Zeljko Ljubenovic, but he gets underneath it and fires well over. Food for thought for United.

Paul Pogba tries a raking long-range pass into the path of Juan Mata, but he gets too much on it, and the ball runs out of play.

The pattern of the game appears to be United with all the possession, with Zorya getting 11 men behind the ball. Slow tempo early on here.

We are under way here at Old Trafford. Ground isn't anywhere near full, which is a rare sight in these parts. This is the biggest match in Zorya's history. Can they pull off an almighty shock? Our referee tonight is Orel Grinfeld from Israel.

Who'd have thought that Juan Mata would be so important to Jose Mourinho...

United have not kept a clean sheet in Europe since a 0-0 draw with PSV in November 2015 (six games without), their longest run since October 2013 (nine games without a clean sheet). What's more, Zorya have scored in 10 of their past 11 European games (including qualifiers), netting 20 goals (1.8 goals per game).

A fine record...

UNFAMILIAR FOES: Zorya Luhansk will be the third Ukrainian side that Manchester United have met in Europe (after Dynamo Kiev and Shakhtar Donetsk), winning four of the six meetings with such sides (W4 D2 L0).

United back on track? Optimism was palpable on the red half of Manchester after Mourinho's reign got off to a superb start with three wins out of three in August. Then, Pep Guardiola and his noisy noblemen came to town, and taught United a lesson on their own turf, triggering a run of three successive defeats. A laboured success against lowly Northampton Town in the EFL Cup didn't exactly get fans back on Mourinho's side, but a bold selection against Leicester yielded a positive 4-1 victory over Leicester at the weekend - the Red Devils' best performance of the season, especially in the first 45 minutes. Back on track? Tonight is a must-win if that is to be the case.

NO ROONEY... AGAIN! However, this is more down to injury than anything else. Rooney missed United training on Tuesday due to a back injury, and Mourinho has chosen not to risk his skipper. Four changes in total for United. Sergio Romero replaces David de Gea in goal, with the Spaniard getting the full day off, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Marcos Rojo start in place of Antonio Valencia and Daley Blind, while Marouane Fellaini deputises in midfield for Ander Herrera.

Hello and welcome to our LIVE text commentary of Manchester United's Europa League clash with Zorya Luhansk from Old Trafford. The hosts did not get their maiden Europa League group stage campaign off to a positive start, as Jose Mourinho's men slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Feyenoord two weeks ago. Things have improved since, with a stellar showing in the 4-1 win over Premier League champions Leicester on Saturday raising spirits around M16. Zorya Luhansk will be no pushovers though, and come into this in good form, currently sitting above United in Group A after a 1-1 draw with Fenerbahce in their tournament opener. I'm Pete Hall (@PeteHall86), and I will be bringing you the action, as it happens, live!
