Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck was taken off on a stretcher and given oxygen in his side's Europa League game against Sporting on Thursday after landing awkwardly from an attempted header, hours after being named in the England squad.
The England forward landed awkwardly as he challenged Bruno Gaspar for a header early in the first half, with his team-mates showing immediate concern for his plight.
The 27-year-old took on oxygen as he was tended to on the pitch for several minutes before he was stretchered off, with some of Welbeck’s team-mates were left visibly distraught by his plight.
There was no immediate comment from the club on the seriousness of the injury to Welbeck, whose contract with the north London side ends at the end of the 2018-19 season.
“When one player suffers an injury like that the mind thinks of the player first.
"I think the players were concentrated for the match but when we finished the first thing was to ask about him [Welbeck],” Arsenal coach Unai Emery said post-match.
