Rangers' Europa League campaign came to an end on Thursday night as they were sunk by a late Rapid Wien goal.
Coming into the game Steven Gerrard's side knew they had to win but they could only muster seven shots across the 90 minutes.
That tally was matched by the home team but unlike their opponents Rapid took their chance as Dejan Ljubicic kept his cool to slot past Allan McGregor.
Rapid go through from Group G behind group winners Villarreal.
Meanwhile it was delight for Celtic as they made it through to the next round despite losing 2-1 at home to RB Salzburg.
At one stage of the night Celtic were heading out with RB Leipzig one up against Rosenborg but the Norwegian champions pulled one back in the final minutes to send Brendan Rodgers' side through.
Salzburg led through a powerful header from Munas Dabbur and a calamitous error from Craig Gordon allowed Fredrik Gulbrandsen to double that lead.
Olivier Ntcham pulled one back in added time but at that stage the fans knew that they were on the way through.
In Group H Marseille's terrible campaign finished with a shambolic 3-1 defeat at home to Apollon Limassol, which means the French side finished with just a solitary point.
Frankfurt maintained their 100% record as they won 2-1 away at Lazio.
Another European giant crashed out as AC Milan lost 3-1 away to Olympiacos.
All the goals in Greece came in a thrilling second half, with Milan defender Cristian Zapata scoring an own goal to make it 2-0 to Olympiakos in the 70th minute, before he pulled one back for his side two minutes later.
Yet Milan's defensive frailty was punished when Konstantinos Fortounis scored from the penalty spot in the 81st minute to give his side the win that left them second in Group F on 10 points.
They edged out the seven-times European champions on goal difference and progressed along with group winners Real Betis.
A 3-0 win for Sevilla against Krasnodar at the Estadio Ramon Sachez-Pizjuan saw them progress as the winners of Group J.
Wissam Ben Yedder netted a brace with Ever Banega rounding off the scoring from the penalty spot.
Ismaila Sarr continued his fine form as he scored a brace to help Rennes beat Astana 2-0 and leapfrog the Kazakh side into the next round.
Swedish side Malmo pulled off one of the bigger shocks of the round, winning 1-0 away to 10-man Besiktas to finish runners-up behind Genk in Group I.
Besiktas's Ricardo Quaresma was given a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Franz Brorsson in the second half.
