Transfer details were not disclosed but Russian media put the fee at around three million euros.
The 25-year-old becomes Spartak's second international signing in the Russian off-season after Dutch striker Quincy Owusu-Abeyie, who moved from Arsenal in January.
The Russian league season kicks off on Friday.
Stranzl, who has 17 caps, is the second Austrian fullback to play for Russia's most popular club.
Emanuel Pogatetz was loaned to Spartak by Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in January 2005 before joining English Premier League club Middlesbrough later that year.
Spartak, who finished second in Russia behind city rivals CSKA last season, will compete in this year's Champions League qualifiers.
