Dani Carvajal scored a stunning extra-time goal, following on from Sergio Ramo’s last-gasp equaliser at the end of regulation time, to clinch the European Super Cup for Real Madrid against Sevilla.
Jorge Sampaoli’s side looked set to lift the first piece of silverware of the continental season following goals from Franco Vazquez and Yevhen Konoplyanka, but Ramos found the net in the 94th minute to force extra-time.
Timothee Kolodziejczak was shown a second yellow card in extra-time to reduce Sevilla to 10 men, giving Real Madrid the advantage. It eventually told as Carvajal scored a late winner to win the match before it went to a penalty shootout.

Marco Asensio scored the opener for Los Blancos in Trondheim and impressed throughout, making a case for himself ahead of the start of the new Spanish Liga season. Alvaro Morata failed to make an impression, however, as Real Madrid stumbled towards a European Super Cup win, despite Sevilla’s dominance of much of the contest.

TALKING POINT - Do Real Madrid need to add to their squad before the window shuts?
Considering that Real Madrid appealed the transfer ban handed them in order to ensure that they can make signings this summer, it’s somewhat peculiar that they have been so quiet. The likes of James and Isco are rumoured to be on the transfer list which would suggest that the Spanish capital club will be active before the window shuts at the end of the month. This performance hinted that, indeed, something is missing.

The youngster spent last season on loan at Espanyol but is now back at his parent club Real Madrid this summer. But after an impressive pre-season Asensio has forced his way into the first-team fold and marked his senior debut with a stunning goal. 19’ CLOSE TO A CONNECTION! Isco played a really dangerous low ball into the box for Lucas to latch on to, but the youngster couldn't quite stretch far enough and the chance was gone.

28’ SKIED OVER THE BAR! Vietto did really well to burst to the byline and cut back a cross to the back post for the run of Mariano, but the right back ballooned his shot over the bar.
32’ GREAT EFFORT BY CARRICO! The Sevilla midfielder picked up the ball about 25 yards out and lashed a low shot towards the Real Madrid goal. But Casilla did well to make the save.
43’ GOAL! Real Madrid 1-1 Sevilla: Out of nothing Sevilla have an equaliser in Trondheim! The cross was brought down by Vitolo, but the finish was applied by Vazquez. He found the bottom corner.
44’ ISCO HEADER ON GOAL! Lucas does really well to beat his man and get to the byline before crossing into the box. Isco gets in front of his marker, but his header is straight at Rico.
57’ GOOD CLEARANCE! Lucas burst down the right side and looked to find the run of Morata inside the penalty area, buy Pareja was on hand to clear with a smart little backheel.
59’ ISCO SHOOTS WIDE! The Real Madrid playmaker creates some space for himself on the edge of the penalty area, but he flashes his shot wide of the near post. That was a close one.
66’ FIRST CHANCE FOR BENZEMA! The Real Madrid striker gets on the end of a Lucas cross, but Mariano does just enough to put off the Frenchman and the ball goes behind for a corner.
67’ RICO SAVES FROM RAMOS! The Real Madrid centre back rises highest from a corner kick to meet with his head, but Rico gets down well to make the simple save from the header.

73’ GOAL! Real Madrid 1-2 Sevilla: What a cool penalty! Konoplyanka waited for the goalkeeper Casilla to make a move and calmly rolls the ball into the opposite corner. He hardly hit it!
83’ CARVAJAL HAS A SHOT AT GOAL! The right back burst into the Sevilla penalty area and looked up. There was nothing on so he shot at the near post, drawing the save from Rico.
91’ RICO MAKES A FLYING SAVE! A Real Madrid shot is deflected high into the air inside the box, with the ball spinning. But Rico comes flying off his line to make a superman punch away from danger.
90+4’ GOAL! Real Madrid 2-2 Sevilla: He has scored another stoppage time equaliser in a European final! Lucas stages the ball up and Ramos just has to head the ball home from a matter of yards out.
91’ RICO IS REQUIRED TO MAKE THE SAVE! Benzema shows good feet to come inside and take the shot, but the Sevilla goalkeeper reads the effort and makes the diving save.
94’ PAREJA MAKES THE BLOCK! Benzema, who looks lively in this extra-time period, takes the shot from about 18 yards out, but Pareja dives in to make the block to deny him.
