Louis van Gaal's job is truly on the line tonight. United have only won five of their last 18 matches in all competitions (D6, L7). Two of those victories were in the FA Cup against Sheffield United and Derby County.

Tonight marks the first competitive meeting between the two sides but both come into the match short on confidence. Shrewsbury have lost three of their last four matches at home whilst United lost to FC Midtjylland in the Europa League last week.

Shrewsbury manager Micky Mellon (via BBC): "We will give it our best go and we won't be overawed. We will make sure that we thoroughly enjoy the game and take it all in and give the best account of ourselves that we possibly can to represent this great football town. We've got to do certain things in a certain way to increase our chances of getting a result, so that's what we're working on and the mentality we're approaching the game with."

So Louis van Gaal has made three changes from the side that embarrassingly lost to FC Midtjylland in the Europa League last week, bringing in Schneiderlin for Michael Carrick and starting Varela ahead of Donald Love. The other change also comes in defence, with Cameron Borthwick-Jackson returning, as Paddy McNair drops to the bench and Daley Blind slots into a centre-back role.

Louis van Gaal: "You cannot continue with losing games. You have to see every match as a match you have to win. On Monday we have to win. If we win, we are in the next round and we are capable of winning the FA Cup. The question is how we lift ourselves for this game because Shrewsbury will fight for the second balls and play direct and those kind of things, and you have to cope."
