- End of 2nd Half
FULL-TIME: Cristiano Ronaldo's eighth minute goal proves the winner for Portugal. Russia were unforgivably slow to wake up and when they did, the hosts couldn't find an equaliser.
It means Portugal top Group A and are on the verge of sealing a semi-final place. Meanwhile, Russia need to beat Mexico in the final group game to have any chance of progressing.
OVER! The corner is delivered. Dzhikiya rises above Pepe, but can't keep his header down. That could be Russia's final opportunity.
CHANCE! There it is. Rui Patricio is alert to tip over a cross/shot. Russia now have a corner!
Four minutes of added time to play. Will Russia carve open one final opportunity?
PENALTY APPEAL! Panic inside the Portugal box! Bukharov goes down under a challenge but the referee signals play on. The Russian manager is called for the VAR system to be used, but the ref isn't interested!
As it stands, Portugal will top the group with four points after two games played. Russia are second, but Mexico will leapfrog them if they can beat New Zealand later today.
The hosts are now playing a 4-4-3 formation in a bid to find a late, late equaliser.

Another substitute from Russia - Aleksandr Bukharov replaces Kudryashov.
- OffAdrien SilvaPortugal
- OnDanilo PereiraPortugal
PORTUGAL SUB: Third and final change now - Danilo is on, Adrien Silva is off.
Into the final 10 minutes now. Russia have kind of ran out of steam. They're yet to have a shot on target so it's debateable if they ever had any steam in the first place.
- OffAndré SilvaPortugal
- OnGelson MartinsPortugal
PORTUGAL SUB: Second change for the visitors - Andre Silva is replaced by Gelson Martins.
The free-kick is sent into the Russian penalty area. Akinfeev is all at sea! He gets nowhere near the ball but Portugal can't capitalise as they head over the bar.
Yellow cards galore. Samedov blocks the run of William Carvalho who was about to run onto a pass from Ronaldo. Can Portugal create an opportunity from the free-kick? Adrien Silva to deliver...
The ball falls kindly for Andre Silva who opts to shoot first time from just inside the penalty area. Fortunately, for Russia, the ball takes a deflection and the effort causes little problems for Akinfeev.
- Yellow cardGeorgi DzhikiyaRussia
YELLOW CARD: Dzhikiya goes into the book for hauling back Pepe who goes down rather theatrically.
It's a disappointing delivery and Portugal easily clear. Can the hosts find a way back into the game? They have around 20 minutes to do so...
- Yellow cardBernardo SilvaPortugal
Bernardo Silva, currently playing at full-back, receives a booking for a foul on the channel. Russia have finally woken up and are beginning to cause some problems for the Portuguese.
Finally, Portugal's goalkeeper Patricio is called into action as he takes the pressure off his defenders by collecting a dangerous cross.
- OffDmitri KombarovRussia
- OnDmitri PolozRussia
RUSSIA SUB: Dimitri Poloz is on and it looks like the hosts are now using two strikers. He replaced Kombarov.
- OffRaphaël GuerreiroPortugal
PORTUGAL SUB: Eliseu takes the place of Guerreiro. It's the first change the visitors have made.
WIDE! Ronaldo rolls the ball back to Bernardo Silva who strikes the ball first time from just outside the penalty area. But it's well over the bar. The game is really beginning to open up now.
The 31-year-old dances past a couple of Russian defenders before feeding Andre Gomes. Ronaldo is unmarked as the cross comes into the penalty area, but somehow fails to get his header on target. Russia survive.
CHANCE FOR RUSSIA!
Samedov sends a teasing ball across the face of Portugal's goal but it just evades the head of Smolov and the opportunity is gone.
Portugal are intent on doubling their advantage now. Bernardo Silva picks out Andre Silva at the back post but his header is blocked.
Moments later and Cedric lets fly from 30 yards but Akinfeev is level to the shot and parries it away from goal.
Ronaldo has certainly got his admirers.
- Yellow cardPepePortugal
YELLOW CARD: Pepe goes into the book for a deliberate handball.
The commentators on ITV4 are concerned about today's attendance - the stadium isn't half full. And you have to say, it is quite worrying that some Russian fans don't want to see their team take on the European champions in their captial city.
Zhirkov is released behind the Portugal defensive line with a lovely pass but the linesman raises his flag. The replays show the Russian may have been level.
Portugal concede a corner. The referee gives Pepe a warning that he'll be watching him as the ball comes in. Finally, the set-piece is taken but the visitors defend it quite easily.
Have a quick look at Ronaldo's earlier opportunity. This was the 31-year-old's chance to double his side's advantage in the first half.
Golovin finds a pocket of space and tries to release a team mate with a through ball. However, Guerreiro, who has enjoyed an impressive match, does well to cut it out with a sliding challenge.
Ronaldo feeds Cedric who delivers a cross into the Russian penalty area. Andre Silva leaps like a salmon out of water and heads it goalwards but Akinfeev keeps it out with a wonderful one-handed save.
- 2nd Half
Portugal get us underway for the start of the second period.
- OffRoman ShishkinRussia
- OnAleksandr ErokhinRussia
Common sense has prevailed. Russia have made a change to their system and also a change to their personnel. Aleksandr Erokhin replaces Shishkin.
- End of 1st Half
HALF-TIME: Cristiano Ronaldo's 8th minute goal separates the sides at the break. The 31-year-old has put his personal issues to one side and really looks in the mood today.
One minute of added time to be played at the end of the first half.
Portugal are finishing the half well on top. Russia need to make drastic changes at the break if they are to find a way back into the match. They've been far too defensive-minded.
Good work from Cedric as the Southampton full-back manages to turn inside the Russian penalty area, but his shot is blocked.
It's a rare opportunity for Russia. Zhirkov is allowed too much space to deliver a cross from the channel. It falls to Smolov - the man the hosts wanted it to - But his first time effort is well wide of the goal.
After a moment of uncertainty, Russia eventually deal with the corner. It's not long until the visitors have the ball back though.
A cross is swung into the Russian penalty area. It's dangerous but Vasin does well to react first as he heads it behind for a Portugal corner.
More frustration for Russia and Smolov. The forward latches onto a through ball, but he has SEVEN Portugal shirts around him and ends up losing the ball.
Russia are really struggling. Smolov is a goal machine in his native country, but he's simply outnumbered in the hosts' 4-5-1 system.
A legend of the game.
Ronaldo is granted far too much space and he bursts into the penalty area. He dances his way past Vasin before shooting but Akinfeev does brilliantly to get in front of the shot.
The rebound falls to Cedric whose cross is cleared by the Russian defence.
Ronaldo picks up the ball in some space just outside the penalty area. He has options either side, but ends up running into trouble and is dispossessed.
Russia want a free-kick on the wing. Zhirkov falls under the challenge of Pepe, but the referee waves play on.
Portugal win a corner but it fails to result in an opportunity as Pepe commits a foul just as the ball was swung into the Russia penalty area.
- Yellow cardDenis GlushakovRussia
YELLOW CARD! The referee goes to his pocket for the first time this afternoon and brandishes a booking to Glushakov for a foul on William Carvalho.
Have a look at Ronaldo's opener. Go on, you know you want to.
It's a tame effort from Ronaldo who does well to curl the ball around the wall, but can't find the zip needed to beat Akinfeev. Easy save for the veteran.
Kudryashov, in his rather intimidating face mask, hacks down Ronaldo and Portugal have a free-kick. The Real Madrid star is standing over the ball. The free-kick is around 30 yards out...
Russia boss Stanislav Cherchesov needs to find a way to get his playmaker Golovin more involved in this game.
Russia launch an attack on the break. Zhirkov feeds Golovin who has taken up a position on the right channel. Unfortunately, for the hosts, he sees his attempted cross blocked.
Fernando Santos normally sets his side up quite defensively, but he took a risk today and his team are playing with some freedom here. It's paid off too. Portugal looking very comfortable at the moment.
The corner comes to absolutely nothing, as Portugal clear their lines quite easily.
Finally, Russia get out of their own half. And, in fact, they have a corner! Great work from Zhirkov down the channel. Now, what can the hosts muster up from the set-pieces? They're quite good in the air...
The hosts were set up to contain Portugal, but now they must alter their game plan.
But really, who else? The 31-year-old just keeps scoring. Russia's defence is all over the place, and Ronaldo only needs half an opportunity.
- GoalCristiano RonaldoPortugal
GOAL! Portugal are ahead and it's Ronaldo with the opener. He has now scored 74 times for his country.
The superstar times his run perfectly to drift behind Russia's defender Kudryashov and head home from Guerreiro's deep cross.
A delightful through pass almost releases Ronaldo who had made a clever run behind the home defence, but Akinfeev beats the Real Madrid star to the ball.
Russia haven't got out of their own half just yet. Portugal are dominating possession and have the hosts pinned back, but they're not really doing much with the ball.
A wonderful achievement for a fantastic goalkeeper.
Ronaldo's first contribution is to collect the ball on the wing, before cutting inside and losing possession, much to the satisfaction of the home supporters.
Russia, wearing red, appear to be lined up quite defensively. They're playing a 4-5-1 sytem today.
- 1st Half
KICK-OFF: The action begins.
National anthems underway...
A beautiful day for football and there's only five minutes until kick-off. Russia can progress to the semi-final of the Confederations Cup with a victory, but standing in their way is Cristiano Ronaldo and Co who need a victory after their 2-2 draw with Mexico...
No pressure then, Russia...
STAT: Russia are unbeaten in each of their four home matches against Portugal (W3-D1), keeping a clean sheet in each of those matches.
Anyway, onto international football and today's important match. Russia made a winning start against New Zealand, even if it wasn't entirely convincing, but the host nation are underdogs in today's match, played at Otkrytie Arena in Moscow. They face a Portugal side who are under pressure themselves, after drawing their opening game with Mexico.
According to the very latest reports, Ronaldo is going nowhere. Surprise, surprise. The media in Spain are saying the 31-year-old has been moved by Real Madrid's president Florentino Perez’s impassioned defence of him, in regards to a reported tax dispute.
Meanwhile, Portugal make four changes to the side that drew with Mexico: Moutinho, Quaresma, Nani and Jose Fonte are all rested. Taking their place are Adrien Silva. Bruno Alves, Bernardo Silva, and Andre Silva. Obviously Cristiano Ronaldo starts. Speaking of which...
Ah, team selections. Let's start with the hosts, shall we? Manager Stanislav Cherchesov has lined his side up in a 5-4-1 formation with Fedor Smolov hoping to score for the second consecutive game after getting off the mark against New Zealand last time out. You already know about the qualities of 21-year-old Aleksandr Golovin, and if you don't, you really should. The CSKA Moscow midfielder will be hoping to steal the headlines from Cristiano Ronaldo.
