Ten goals were nominated for the award, including strikes from Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Ricardo Quaresma, while Gareth Bale's spectacular overhead kick in the Champions League Final was also among the nominees.
But Salah's special goal against Liverpool's local rivals was voted the most befitting of the award.
The Egyptian forward's slick turn, clever dribble and emphatic finish was the perfect combination of a wide array of attacking skills, all executed at extraordinary pace.
The coach of France's triumphant World Cup squad, Didier Deschamps, was named the men's coach of the year, beating Real Madrid's Zinedine Zidane to the coveted managerial prize.
Belgium's Thibaut Courtois was named goalkeeper of the year after his heroic efforts for the national team in the World Cup. It was also a noteworthy club season for the stopper, who left Chelsea to join Real Madrid in the summer.
And the winner of the best women's coach of the year was Lyon manager Reynald Pedros.
FIFA's annual 'The Best' awards were hosted on Monday 24 September on London's Southbank, where the world's greatest players gathered.
The Puskas award was the first major award of the evening, with FIFA's Player of the Year being the headline event. Luka Modric, Salah and Cristiano Ronaldo were the nominees.

  • Puskas Award (best goal) - Mo Salah
  • Men's coach of the year - Didier Deschamps
  • Women's coach of the year - Reynald Pedros
