England player ratings v Brazil: Yes, a few did alright

Don't dwell on the ball, Joe! Don't dwell on the ball! The home fans let out a shriek every time the England goalkeeper attempted to bring the ball out from the back, but otherwise it was an assured performance, including two smart saves from Philippe Coutinho in the second half and from Paulinho late on.

Managed to get forward on numerous occasions, showing his pace and ability to find a pinpoint cross. Never looked remotely troubled defensively. Southgate needs to find more inventive ways of enabling his full-backs to get forward.

Dani Alves and Bertrand were at it all evening with the England man more often than not on the back foot, but he held up perfectly well without excelling. As with Walker, Southgate could have afforded him more of an opportunity to get forward.

A very impressive performance from Gomez, who showed incredible energy and managed to make his presence felt marking Neymar for much of the game. Never looked fazed or under pressure, he demonstrated that he has the mentality and ability to fare well on the big stage. The clear man of the match from an England perspective.

Never troubled in leading the England backline, he demonstrated his confidence from playing under Pep Guardiola. Always comfortable on the ball, he also led the England defence effectively and commanded the line very well indeed.

Very good on the ball and assured coming forward, it was an impressive showing from Maguire who never looked out of place and helped successfully contain Brazil's illustrious stars.

An underwhelming showing from Livermore in midfield, improved at least by the fact that he just about managed to avoid having to take an early bath after a scuffle with Alves early in the second half.

Solid, dependable, dogged... etc, etc, etc. His performance was only made to look dull because he was playing alongside Livermore in a very similar role, something Southgate should surely have avoided. As such, England lacked any kind of imagination from the midfield. Dier needs to be surrounded by more progressive players.

A number of classic bursts down the flanks, but no real end product. The lack of a decent ball into the box from numerous very promising positions was very frustrating for his manager and team-mates. Replaced by Dominic Solanke in the second half.

A thoroughly disappointing night for the 21-year-old as he limped off after just 35 minutes, unable to show what he could do against the visitors.

Showed glimpses of real class in the final third, including a jinking run on the hour mark that had Wembley on its feet. Too often left isolated with Vardy drifting all over the place, he did not enjoy much support at all. Replaced by Tammy Abraham late on.

Struggled to really get into the game from a creative perspective but still turned in a decent and hardworking shift. Was not able to show what he can do with such a paucity of possession and failed to stamp his authority on the midfield at any stage.

Showed his pace with two strong runs but was not given much of an opportunity on the night after coming on for Rashford.

As with Abraham, it was a fleeting appearance from Solanke with no real chances to get his foot on the ball and make his mark.

Just a very brief run out for the Manchester United player with Southgate already having a clear knowledge of his abilities.

Impossible to judge Rose after he came on in the 90th minute, but Southgate already knows plenty about the left back.
