Switzerland manager Vladimir Petkovic has dropped captain Gökhan Inler from his squad because of his lack of game time at Leicester City. The 31-year-old has started just three matches for the Premier League leaders since his €7 million summer move from Napoli.

Switzerland reached the last 16 at the 2014 World Cup and qualified for this summer's European Championships after finishing as the runners-up to England in Group E, a group that also included Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania and San Marino.

The sale of alcohol is banned in the Republic of Ireland on Good Friday, but Dublin's Aviva Stadium is one of the few places in the country one can buy a drink on the religious holiday. Most matchdays, supporters arrive maybe ten minutes before kick-off. Today? They were queueing at 5.30pm to enter the ground.

"Let's be fair about it, the players who are coming in late here have a bit to do, I must admit. Everything would probably have to go pretty well for them individually,” the 64-year-old said. "But it's not impossible and it's happened before, and that's why I'd like to open the door for them, to feel as if they have got a chance.”

O'Neill said during the week that he would use the two Dublin international friendlies against Switzerland and against Slovakia on Tuesday to allow his squad's fringe players a run-out. However, O'Neill warned that players like Blackburn defender Duffy and Brentford midfielder Judge are more likely to be fighting for places for the upcoming World Cup qualifying campaign that for this June's Euro 2016 finals.

"Robbie's still sore," manager Martin O'Neill said at his pre-match news conference on Thursday. "He got a bit of a knock and he's taking a little bit longer to get over it than he expected. He probably won't be available for Friday but we'll look at it again over the weekend."
