The 30-year-old was born in Rosario and briefly played for his favourite club Newell’s in their academy where his age group were dubbed 'The Machine of 87' due to their incredible success.
At the age of 13 he moved to Barcelona and subsequently never played for the Newell’s first-team.

He has regularly spoken of his desire to return to Newell’s one day and in an interview with TyC Sports, an Argentine TV station, he stressed that once more.
The desire is always playing for Newell's, it is what I dreamed as a kid.
However, Messi was vague on his future saying he wasn’t sure where he would later on down the line.
"When I went to the club I imagined playing in the Primera Division, but I do not know what's going to happen in a few years.

"I cannot say I'm going back because I do not know where I'm going to be."
Those comments come with Messi’s contract due to expire at the end of the season and less two months to go before he can negotiate with other clubs to move on a free transfer.
