FT

Rooney looks to the heavens after that late chance, and is once more inches away from turning a cross in, but he can't quite get to it...

A comprehensive win for England. Will they now lift the Wayne Rooney Foundation International cup?

Rooney heads over to Brad Guzan and shares a nice moment with the US goalkeeper.

Farewell, Wayne.

90+2'

HOW DARE YOU BRAD! HOW DARE YOU!

Rooney has the ball some 15 yards out, he cuts onto his right foot and strikes low, but Guzan gets down to keep out the effort. Rooney simply smiles.

90'

THREE minutes added on. Those yet to leave are waiting for one thing, Wayne...

88'

Players trying a little too hard out there to manufacture a Rooney goal. He has two minutes plus stoppage time to cap his farewell with a 54th goal for England.

86'

Foul? Not for me, says the referee, who waves away Pulisic's claims on the edge of the area as he was body-checked. He throws his arms up in frustration.

84'

USA still doing their utmost to get something back from this, but Pulisic's cross is into the hands of McCarthy. Not their night.

-
79'

And that is Wilson's final contribution. He's had a great debut for England up front, and goes off to a big ovation. On comes Rashford, to a massive cheer.

GOAL! Wilson strikes on his debut!

And it's no more than the Bournemouth striker deserves. Delph's cross finds Wilson six yards out and this time he does turn his effort in at the near post.

76'

Tell you what, Loftus-Cheek has certainly come on with a purpose here. He takes a ball down and has a few touches before seeing an attempt blocked. Solid start overall from the Chelsea midfielder.

Wide! Moments later, a lovely England move results in Alexander-Arnold sliding it across goal for Wilson, who again cannot direct his effort on goal.

72'

This truly is a friendly, isn't it. The excitement levels heighten as Rooney receives the ball some 20 yards out. He checks onto his left foot, and curls a tame effort towards Guzan.

You're supposed to let it in, Brad!

69'

And..... there's a fully clothed streaker on the pitch. You're not doing it properly.

He heads over to hug Rooney, and eventually gets escorted off to cheers. Would have booed him meself.

67'

Over! USA's best chance of the half... but Wood can only direct his header over from some 10 yards out following Pulisic's cross.

65'

Rooney's deft flick sends Alexander-Arnold into the area, but his touch is heavy and the US retrieve it. Cheers everytime Rooney gets the ball - this truly is friendly.

63'

A confidence-boosting punch away from McCarthy on his England debut in goal. England have been a bit slow this half.

And in case you were wondering, Wilson has remained the focal point up front, with Rooney just behind.

62'

Tireless work from Pulisic and he earns the US a corner in front of the visiting fans.

-

120 and out.

60'

Michael Hincks over at Wembley...

"The mobile phones were out in force as Rooney made his way onto the pitch, and he'll be delighted with the warm reception. Regardless of the furore before the fixture, there was clearly a large majority of the crowd that were looking forward to that moment.

"He has some 30-odd minutes to add to his 53-goal tally in an England shirt."

58'

"Roooooooooney!"

Triple sub for England, but most tellingly it's Rooney who comes on for his 120th and final cap for England. Delph runs over the chuck him the captain's armband and it's a huge ovation for the forward.

Henderson and Dier come on as well, in case you were interested...

Off go Alli, Chilwell and Lingard.

55'

Blocked! Almost a second for Lingard - Chilwell's cut back is directed on goal by Lingard, but his effort is stopped before testing Guzan.

"Rooney!" are the chants from the fans - he's about to come on...

53'

England happy to sit back and counter at the moment. They almost do with devastating effect, but Lingard can't thread it through for Sancho who would have been through on goal.

51'

US giving it a go this half but Pulisic and then Wood can't quite work themselves enough space to shoot from 20 yards out.

Meanwhile, the England band are playing that Southgate song... still.

49'

Almost a very bizarre third for England but neither Wilson or Lingard can quite direct it on goal as a high ball bounces in the USA area.

47'

Just the one half-time change then in goal. When will Rooney come on I wonder?

And that is half-time. No stoppages. A great half as far as England are concerned, and after Pickford denied Pulisic, England hit USA with a double sucker-punch. A beauty from Lingard, a fine strike from Alexander-Arnold. A bit too easy at times for the hosts.

44'

Pulisic looks to make up for his earlier squandered chance, but he pulls the effort and fires wide of Pickford's near post.

-
40'

Save! Plenty of commendable performances from England so far. Chilwell's perfect ball over the top picks out WIlson, who takes a fine touch before striking, but it's low and too close to Guzan.

38'

Save! US' No 16 Julian Green tries a speculative effort from 25 yards out, and Pickford opts to parry it in front of him. Fortunately for him, England clear.

36'

Pace has slowed down somewhat now. For England they are capable of turning it on at a canter. The USA meanwhile must work out how they will get back into this Wayne Rooney Foundation International encounter. Ahem.

104 seconds apart...

A nice way to score your first England goal. Well in, Trent. USA, and Pulisic, will be reeling from that earlier miss.

  • Jesse Lingard
GoalJesse LingardEnglandGOAL! England lead thanks a stunner from Lingard. Wow. That is some strike from Lingard, barely a minute after Pickford's huge save for England. Alli plays it back to the Man Utd man, and he curls in an absolute beauty from the corner of the box, right into the top corner.

GOAL! England lead thanks a stunner from Lingard.

Wow. That is some strike from Lingard, barely a minute after Pickford's huge save for England. Alli plays it back to the Man Utd man, and he curls in an absolute beauty from the corner of the box, right into the top corner.

24'

Huge save! Somehow, somehow, Pulisic finds himself through on goal after England's defence just stand there and appeal for offside - or something.... because Pulici was the last player to touch it before recovering it.

Anyway, he storms down on goal, one on one with Pickford, and it's the Everton goalkeeper who denies the Dortmund forward.

-
22'

Sancho appears keen to put on a show on his first England start. A few tricks early on, but this time his final ball is lacking as his cross cannot find a man in white.

20'

Chilwell's cross is headed away, but England remain camped in USA's half after Alli draws another foul.

19'

England's bright start has somewhat subsided, but they still look the more likely to score. Alli goes down under a challenge from Trapp and it hands the hosts a great chance to cross it in from the corner of the area... or shoot on goal?

17'

A slow start he says... Pulisic is afforded far too much space in the England box, but as he tries to pick out a pass, the cross ends up deflecting into Pickford's grasp.

-

A slow start from USA...

14'

Save! Lingard seeing plenty of the ball early on. A fine through-ball from Alexander-Arnold picks out the Man Utd man, but he's at a tight angle when firing down on goal. Guzan bats it away before claiming a chested pass back.

11'

Big chance! And you have to say Wilson should be celebrating a debut goal by now...

A poor Guzan backpass results in Lingard picking the ball up out wide. His ball in finds Wilson some six yards out, but as he tries to deftly guide the ball across goal, he does not get enough contact on it and it ends up rolling towards the corner flag.

Penalty? Moments later, Wilson goes down after nudging the ball past Guzan. The referee points for a goal-kick... Honestly? Looks like Wilson has left his leg near Guzan anticipating the contact. Not for me, Clive.

8'

Some of England's link-up play around the box is superb. This time Sancho plays a neat one-two with Alli, but he overruns the ball when taking it into the penalty area.

Plenty of positive endeavour from England's forward line early on.

6'

Off the bar! Alexander-Arnold's cross is met by Alli, and it takes a superb stop from Guzan to flick it onto the bar. However, the flag had already gone up with the cross going out before it curled back in... Still. Quality header. Top stop.

4'

Again England find joy down the left, and this time Lingard's cross is sent behind for a corner.

Chilwell takes, WIlson tries a flick at the near post but he can't connect. A second corner comes England's way thanks to Alli...

2'

Very positive start from England. Lingard combines nicely with Chilwell down the left and it's the latter who sends a cross into the corridor of uncertainty. No player on the end of it though, and moments later Delph sees an attempt blocked.

KICK-OFF

England in all white. USA in a dark-blue number. Fashion report out the way, time to focus on the football!

And away we go... LIngard gets the game going.

-
19.58

National anthems done and dusted. Roll on the football...

19.53

Out come the teams at Wembley. Big honour for Delph too to lead England out. That leaves us seven minutes for plenty of hoo-ha. Ooh ya.

19.50

Ten minutes till kick-off, one of our own Michael Hincks is at Wembley for this one...

"No doubt that Wayne's the main attraction here among what appears to be a youthful crowd.

"But there's plenty to get excited about away from the Rooney factor. Sancho gets the chance to shine from the off, while Wilson will be eager to show Southgate that England's forward options remain strong going into the next cycle. Big chance to impress tonight."

19.38

Club team-mates, but opponents this evening…

19.37

It's Wayne's world. We're all just living in it.

England's Wayne Rooney, Kyle Walker and team mates
19.32

Plucky Americans: USA have lost only one of their last nine matches against European opposition (W3 D5), a 1-2 defeat to the Republic of Ireland in June.

19.27

Smile, lads, it's your debut!

19.22

The man in the other corner: Dave Sarachan remains USA’s interim head coach despite assuming control more than a year ago. He took charge after they failed, somewhat catastrophically, to reach the World Cup this summer, and they haven’t found a permanent replacement since..

Could a positive result go some way to securing Sarachan’s future?

Uncle Sam are currently being managed by Dave Sarachan
19.17

This will be only the USA's third match at Wembley against England - they've lost their previous two matches there - both friendlies - in September 1994 and May 2008.

Here’s how the last one played out...

19.13

Plenty to take from England’s team news. As expected Rooney is on the bench and set to come on in the second half…

The big news is that Jadon Sancho starts his first England game, while Callum Wilson and Lewis Dunk make their debuts from the off.

Plenty of strength on the bench. Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford among those who must wait in the wings.

19.08

USA: Guzan, Miazga, Brooks, Yedlin, Villafana, McKennie, Trapp, Pulisic, Green, Weah, Wood

Subs: Horvath, Carter-Vickers, Adams, Delgado, Lletget, Saief, Moore, Acosta, Cannon

19.05

England: Pickford, Alexander-Arnold, Keane, Dunk, Chilwell, Winks, Delph, Alli, Sancho, Wilson, Lingard

Subs: Rooney, Kane, Butland, Walker, Henderson, Sterling, Barkley, Rashford, Stones, McCarthy, Dier, Loftus-Cheek

19.02

Evening all, and welcome along to the live text coverage for England’s friendly against USA at Wembley.

Actually, not friendly, rather the Wayne Rooney Foundation International. All for a good cause, despite the furore, and of course there’s a match to be won and momentum to be gained ahead of the Nations League encounter against Croatia on Sunday.

Let’s have a look at the team news…

19.00

One last time.

Well. From the bench.
