The match, which was dedicated to anti-discrimination campaign Kick It Out and was the first of its kind, saw Southgate's men host the fellow World Cup last-16 side.
As part of the nods to the work of the campaign, the first 25 seconds of the players walking out of the tunnel were broadcast in black and white by Sky Sports.
The reasons were clear for the unique stunt.
While Kick It Out has held regular dedicated fixtures at Premier League and English Football League fixtures since 2001, this was the first international match hosted in honour of the organisation on its anniversary.
Kick It Out chairman, Lord Herman Ouseley, said the fixture was incredibly special and fans everywhere were able to embrace the message that is being sent.
"We hope that the awareness this fixture raises will encourage everyone involved in football, from the top of the professional game to the smallest grassroots club, to take Kick It Out’s message and put it at the centre of their work.

"We know that football has a big impact on the communities that surround it, and we’re very proud to be able to showcase that on the international stage."
Southgate added: "It’s great that our game gives us a chance to acknowledge the great work done by Kick It Out over the last 25 years."
Very special indeed.
