Football news - Super-sub Kylian Mbappe rescues France in 2-2 draw with Iceland

Kylian Mbappe came off the bench and helped France avoid an embarrassing defeat against Iceland on Thursday evening.

The world champions found themselves 2-0 down with just four minutes left on the clock, despite having dominated possession for much of the game.

Iceland's goals were both well executed, though, with Birkir Bjarnson lashing home in the first half and Kari Arnason leaping above the defence to nod home the second.

It looked like the visitors were about to pull off a famous victory with just a few minutes left on the clock as the France fans grew increasingly impatient - but the substitute Mbappe made the difference, seeing his shot deflected home on 86 minutes before converting a penalty in stoppage time.

What was with France? Against an opponent out of form, on the high of a World Cup win, Didier Deschamps would have been justified in thinking he could rotate his team and not have to rely on a teenage substitute to inspire some kind of respectability.

90' GOAL! And who else but Mbappe? He converts a spot-kick awarded for a chaotic handball, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

This is the first time Iceland have avoided defeat on French soil.
