Antonio Rudiger and Willian both scored to help Chelsea book a League Cup quarter-final spot at the expense of David Unsworth’s Everton.
Charly Musonda’s cross was superbly headed in by Rudiger after 26 minutes to give Chelsea the lead against Everton, who had Unsworth taking temporary charge for the first time after Ronald Koeman’s sacking.
Everton offered little as they trailed going into the break, but the Toffees did have numerous chances to level in the second half.
Wayne Rooney saw his close-range effort saved by Willy Caballero, before Chelsea’s back-up ‘keeper made another stop to deny Phil Jagielka.
Caballero was called into action again as he saved from Keven Mirallas’ low strike, and Ademola Lookman then had the Chelsea goalkeeper beaten but saw his fierce strike skim the bar.
Willian scored an injury-time goal to put the game beyond Everton, though the Toffees did hit back with a consolation through Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The Blues will discover their quarter-final opponents at 4pm on Thursday, as they search for a sixth League Cup in total, and first since 2015.
