Leaked document confirms Gareth Bale cost more than Cristiano Ronaldo
Gareth Bale’s 2013 transfer from Tottenham to Real Madrid was for a world-record fee, a leaked document has revealed.
Madrid have always maintained that the deal that took the Welshman to the Bernabeu was for less than the €96 million (£80 million) they paid for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.
While the Spanish club publicly maintain that the deal was worth €91.59 million, Spanish media – citing the leaked document – report that the actual fee for the former Southampton man was in excess of €100 million.
AS report that Madrid could have paid €87 million in one lump sum up front or €100,759,418 in instalments.
While Madrid elected to pay in instalments, the document also specified that Real would release a statement saying that the deal was worth €91 million. The document added that Tottenham were prohibited from revealing any specifics of the deal.
It is rumoured that Madrid were keen not to antagonise Ronaldo by revealing they paid more for his new team-mate.
The deal was broken down into four instalments of roughly €25m, the first of which was to be paid within 10 days of completion of the deal.
The six-page document also reveals that as part of the deal Bale was banned from making any negative comments regarding his former employers, and Tottenham were also given first refusal on re-signing Bale were he to leave the Bernabeu.
