Lionel Messi at 50 Argentina goals: Modest maestro closes on more milestones
Lionel Messi bagged his 50th international goal as Argentina overcame Bolivia 2-0, and he can add another milestone during this weekend’s El Clasico.
Messi became only the second player in Argentina’s history to reach that milestone after Gabriel Batistuta, who fired 56 goals in 78 appearances for La Albiceleste.
The 28-year-old scored his half century of goals in 107 games for his national side and was typically modest in the aftermath of the achievement.
"I'm happy with goal number 50 but more because we won and this helps to keep growing," Messi said after the game.
Messi’s Argentina made a laboured start to their qualifying campaign, losing one and drawing two of their opening three games but now sit third just two points off joint leaders Uruguay and Ecuador.
Having helped his national side to two wins from two games against Chile and Bolivia, Messi returns to Barcelona in preparation for El Clasico against Real Madrid with yet another milestone within his sights.
A goal against Madrid over the weekend would take him to 450 goals for Barcelona and 500 career goals.
