Atletico Madrid's 2-0 win over Real Sociedad ended in controversy after two of David Moyes' players were shown red for protesting a refereeing decision.
Antoine Griezmann gave Diego Simeone's side the lead after just nine minutes, but with Sociedad pressing late on for a winner a penalty claim for a perceived foul by Jose Maria Gimenez on Jonathas was turned down.
Atletico Madrid proceeded to break down the pitch and score their second of the match, securing the points and prompting angry protests from the home players - with Diego Reyes and Jonathas sent off.
Simeone's side started the match impressively, with Griezmann especially lively from the off. But Sociedad found a foothold in the contest after the restart and applied some pressure of their own towards the end of the match.
The result keeps Atletico Madrid in touch with Barcelona, Celta Vigo and Real Madrid at the top of the Liga table, although Simeone will be concerned with how his team finished the game at the Anoeta.

KEY MOMENTS

12’ - GOAL! Real Sociedad 0 Atletico Madrid 1: What a sensational goal! Griezmann surges right through the centre of the Sociedad defence and finishes with a wonderful chip over the keeper.
22’ - CANALES GOES CLOSE! After a foul by Correa, Canales lines up the free-kick from the best part of 25 yards - but he sends it wide of the target. I think Oblak probably had it covered.
54’ - SHOULD HE BE OFF? Bergara got away with one there. He clattered into Oblak with the ball long gone. He's already on a booking but the referee decides against showing him a second yellow.
61’ - SO CLOSE TO AN OWN GOAL! Jackson gets away with one there! He took the ball out of the gloves of Oblak from a corner kick with a glancing header that flashes just past the far post.

86’ - SOCIEDAD FINALLY HAVE A SHOT ON TARGET! Moyes finally seems to have got the message through to his team that if they are to take somethin from this match they need to shoot. Bruma forces the save from Oblak.
90’ - CHANCE FOR VELA! A cross into the Atletico Madrid falls to the Mexican on the edge of the penalty area, but he blasts his volleyed shot over the bar after good control on the chest.
90’ - SENT OFF! Diego Reyes (Real Sociedad). That's just stupid from the Real Sociedad player. Just moments after picking up a booking he talks his way into another yellow card.
92’ - SHOULD THAT HAVE BEEN A PENALTY? Jonathas goes down inside the area under the challenge on Gimenez, but the referee shakes his head. That was very dubious. First impression was that was a penalty.
93’ - GOAL! Real Sociedad 0 Atletico Madrid 2: Huge controversy! Just moments after Sociedad were denied a penalty Atletico break down the pitch and Carrasco rounds the keeper to score. Wow!

KEY STATS

Diego Simeone has tied Ricardo Zamora for the second most matches (214) in charge of Atletico Madrid.

TALKING POINT

What should Diego Simeone do with Jackson Martinez? Atletico Madrid went for the attack from the start at the Anoeta, with Simeone opting for both Griezmann and Martinez at the head of his frontline. The former impressed, but the Colombian striker - who was Atleti’s big summer signing - once again failed to make an impact. So does Simeone now bench Martinez, or hope that the striker will gradually find his form and confidence again? It’s a tough call, but at the moment the Colombian is offering Atletico very little.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid): His opening goal was the glittering highlight of the match, surging right through the centre of the Real Sociedad defence before chipping over the goalkeeper, but he was Atletico Madrid’s most effective player throughout. He provided them with the attacking outlet that Martinez failed to, and was comfortably the best player on the pitch.
