Atletico Marid certainly weren't at their best this evening, but they ground out the win as they so often do. Griezmann's goal was the difference between the two teams, tightening his team's grip on third place in La Liga. Simeone's decision not to rest many of his starting lineup ultimately paid off.

- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Espanyol 0-1 Atletico Madrid
Griezmann probably should have done better with that. The Frenchman came flying forward on the counter attack, but he wasted his shot rather than playing it to a teammate.
This is a good spell from Espanyol, but that might be because Atletico Madrid are inviting pressure on top of themselves, plugging the gaps at the back to see this game out.
Can Espanyol mount a comeback in these final few minutes? At the moment it looks like Atletico Madrid are more likely to find another goal than the hosts are to find an equaliser.
- OffJavi LópezRCD Espanyol
- OnMarc NavarroRCD Espanyol
And their second change sees Navarro come on for the home side for the final five minutes.
- OffJuradoRCD Espanyol
- OnJosé Antonio ReyesRCD Espanyol
Espanyol make a double change, with their first change seeing former Atleti man Reyes come on.
Whoops! That wasn't the greatest moment of Thomas' young career. He was lining up the shot from distance, but his ankles crumpled at the crucial point. He was under no pressure!
How many times has Griezmann come to Atletico Madrid's rescue this season? If the rumours are true that he might leave this summer, that would be disastrous for the capital club.
FLASHES WIDE! The camera angle made it look closer than it was, but Moreno flashes a header just wide of the far post after beating Oblak to a ball from a corner kick. Wooft!
This has become a real end to end affair since the goal. Espanyol have responded really well to going a goal behind. You wouldn't rule out the possibility of an equaliser on this basis.
Going back to the Atletico Madrid goal, the technique from Griezmann was exceptional. Lopez might feel that he should have done better with his save, but the finish was great.
All of a sudden this game has come to life! Both teams are going for it, although we might see Atletico Madrid become a bit more conservative now that they have the lead.
WHAT A MASSIVE SAVE! That could have been the instant equaliser from Espanyol! Fuego slotted though Leo, but he sees his shot charged down by Oblak. What a huge stop!
- GoalAntoine GriezmannAtlético Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Espanyol 0 Atletico Madrid 1 (73 mins - Antoine Griezmann). The away side have taken the lead! Saul's shot is blocked on the edge of the box and Griezmann was on hand to side foot home a finish at the near post.
For the first time this evening there is a feeling that Atletico Madrid are on top. The introduction of Gameiro has made a big difference, even if he should have stuck away that last chance.
BEST CHANCE OF THE MATCH! Atletico Madrid probably should have taken the lead! First it was Gameiro who had his close range shot blocked, then Luis was denied by another block.
That was a missed chance for Gameiro. He had the opportunity to play in Thomas, who had made a run in behind the Espanyol defence, but the pass was too weak and the clearance was made.
Espanyol have done a really good job of looking after possession this evening, but they haven't done enough with it to get into the box. They lack a real goalscoring frontman.
Griezmann has been very quiet this evening. The Frenchman has done a lot of tracking back, helping out with the defensive side of the game, but he hasn't make an impact up front.
That change will surely see Atletico Madrid make more of an effort to make the ball stick in the final third. The away team have so far struggled to create a real goalscoring opportunity.
- OffYannick CarrascoAtlético Madrid
- OnKevin GameiroAtlético Madrid
Carrasco is now hooked by Simeone and on comes Gameiro for the final 25 minutes of this match.
- Yellow cardPablo PiattiRCD Espanyol
And now Piatti enters the referee's booking, seeing a yellow card. This is hotting up.
Savic really needed to get that block in. Jurado was about to unleash an effort on goal, but the Atletico Madrid centre back stepped out quickly to prevent his shot from reaching Oblak.
- OffFelipe CaicedoRCD Espanyol
- OnLéo BaptistãoRCD Espanyol
Espanyol make their first change of the match, with Caicedo coming off for the home team.
That was an opportunity for Godin. The Atletico Madrid centre back muscled himself into position to get on the end of Koke's corner kick delivery into the box, but he heads wide.
Of course, there's still plenty for both of these sides to fight for. Atletico Madrid have been in excelent form of late and are still battling to finish in the top three. Espanyol are also looking to finish in the top six.
- Yellow cardSaúl ÑíguezAtlético Madrid
Saul loses his cool and hacks down Piatti, who is certainly getting under the skin of Atletico Madrid.
WIDE OF THE TARGET! Piatti gets on the end of a cross into the Atletico Madrid penalty area from the left wing, but he sends his volleyed effort out for a throw in. Decent chance.
There is certainly a sense that Espanyol are starting to crank up the pressure on Atletico Madrid, with Piatti the danger man. The away side need to get a grip of this game, and soon.
Again, apologies for the delay in bringing you updates from this match. Having some technical troubles on our end, so sorry if things are a little slow. We're working through them.
PIATTI SHOT IS DEFLECTED WIDE! The Espanyol playmaker sends a shot towards the far post, but Savic stuck out his foot to make the block and send the ball out for a corner. That was heading in.
- OffFernando TorresAtlético Madrid
- OnThomas ParteyAtlético Madrid
Simeone made a change to his team at the half time break, with Thomas coming on for Atletico Madrid. Will he make the difference in the second half?

- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Espanyol 0-0 Atletico Madrid. It was a competitive first half in Barcelona, but neither side has really taken a grip of the match yet. Still waiting for the breakthrough.
Oh dear. The home fans enjoyed that one, jeering Torres. The veteran Atletico Madrid striker took aim from just inside the penalty area, but he miscues and fires well over the bar.
Having said that, we haven't really seen Luis get forward for Atletico Madrid in this first half. That could be a factor in why the away side have struggled to make an impression.
It's so crowded in the middle of the pitch that both teams are struggling to hold on to the ball, control the game. The full backs and the wingers could ultimately decided this match.
Indeed, it is the hosts who are top at the moment. Atletico Madrid are sitting deep and soaking up the pressure that is being applied. They need the half time interval to come.
Was that a backpass? Caicedo claims that Savic passed the ball back to Oblak to pick it up and the Espanyol attacker would appear to have something of a case. Looked that way.
Gimenez is now making the allegation that Espanyol are making the most of the tackles being made by the away team. He says Martin went down too easily in the challenge.
Atletico Madrid have yet to get going. They have spent the majority of this first half chasing the ball, although they would argue that Espanyol haven't caused them problems either.
Now Fuego takes aim from well out, but he gets his range and angles all wrong and the ball flashes well wide of the target. It is Espanyol who are showing more attacking intent, though.
Caicedo just couldn't get on the end of the cross from the right wing. He attacked the cross against Godin, but neither player could make contact and the chance passes for the hosts.
- Yellow cardFelipe CaicedoRCD Espanyol
And now Caicedo will join Godin in the book. There have been a number of tasty tackles, but no real chances yet.
Piatti has probably been the best player on the pitch in this first half, but in truth there hasn't been a great deal of quality from either side. We're waiting for one of them to control this.
- Yellow cardDiego GodínAtlético Madrid
There's the first yellow card of the game and it goes the way of Godin. Hardly surprising.
Moreno decided to try his luck from distance, shooting at goal from the best part of 30 yards, but his effort flashes well wide of the target. Oblak wasn't bothering himself with that.
You'll be pleased to hear that you haven't missed much, although there is a growing feeling that Atletico Madrid are starting to take more of a grip of this as a contest. Improving.
Apologies for the break in brining you updates from this game. We had to turn something off and on again. That's the solution for sorting any technical problem.
That was a decent idea from Carrasco with that last shot. Lopez wasn't quite set and so the Atletico Madrid man tried to catch him out with a snapshot from about 20 yards out.
FIRST ATLETICO EFFORT! Carrasco takes aim from just outside the Espanyol penalty area, but Lopez makes the save to deny the Belgian winger from finding the back of the net.
As I've already said, this has been a good start to the match by Espanyol. They have seen more of the ball and are pushing into the final third with relative ease. Looking dangerous.
Of course, all eyes will be on the Santiago Bernabeu tomorrow where Real Madrid will host Barcelona in El Clasico. Can Atletico use that to claw back some of the difference at the top of the table?
That probably should have been a yellow card for Gabi. The Atletico Madrid midfielder kicked out at Piatti, but he somehow avoided taking a booking. Flores is shaking his head.
Atletico Madrid are without both Juanfran and Vrseljko, who are both injured for this match, and so Gimenez is starting in the right back position tonight, proving his versatility.
PENALTY CLAIM! Espanyol believe that they should have been awarded a spot kick, with Savic's header flicking off the arm of Saul inside the box. They were so close to each other, though.
This has been a positive start to the match by the home side. Espanyol have enjoyed more of the early possession, with Piatti the one pressing and probing on the edge of the box.
Piatti will give Atletico Madrid something to think about this evening. The on loan Valencia man already looks to be in the mood, with the away side having to do some defending.
Rather surprisingly, Simeone has only made one change to his team from the side that faced Leicester City in the Champions League during the week. He doesn't think fatigue will be a problem.
EARLY CHANCE FOR THE HOSTS! Moreno does really well to evade the challenge of Godin, but Jurado smashes his volley into the ground, with the ball bouncing well over the bar.
Atletico Madrid come into this game on the back of the 1-1 draw against Leciester City at the King Power Stadium. Will they show signs of weariness in this match this evening?
