Barca send star's contract offer to Espanyol

Barcelona made an astonishing blunder over the contract renewal of one of their brightest young stars – by sending their final offer to rivals Espanyol and not his agent.

Ilaix Moriba, 16, is training at the Catalan club’s La Masia academy but has had a number of offers from other teams.

And so, as Barcelona closed in on an agreement with Ilaix, they sent a deal offer to what they thought was his agent.

But, according to ESPN, Barcelona and Espanyol have now confirmed the offer was sent to the latter club’s technical director instead and left the team ‘gobsmacked’ at the money involved. A source joked that the teenager will "earn more than some of their first team players".

Fortunately for Barcelona, who face Espanyol this weekend, their rivals told them of the blunder so they were able to redirect the offer to the right people.

Ilaix is expected to be promoted to the Barca B team next season.
