This is a big result for Real Madrid. This win takes them above Atletico Madrid and into second place in the Liga table and continues their recent resurgence. On the balance of play, Real Madrid deserved all three points, but there will be controversy over some of the refereeing decisions.

- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Atletico Madrid 1-3 Real Madrid
The stands at the Wanda Metropolitano are now pretty much empty. The Atletico Madrid fans aren't usually ones to give up early, but this match has been over for a little while.
Three minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the match.
Next up for Real Madrid is the first leg of their last 16 Champions League tie away to Ajax on Wednesday night. The fixtures are coming thick and fast and this point of the season.
- OffKarim BenzemaReal Madrid
- OnMariano DíazReal Madrid
Benzema has been impressive and he comes off to be replaced by Mariano late on.
Bale heads over! It's another rapid counter attack by Real Madrid, with Benzema breaking in behind. He plays a perfect cross for Bale at the back post, but he heads just over.
Real Madrid have really found form in recent weeks. They are back up into second in La Liga, which is quite feat given where they were not that long ago. Back on the straight and narrow.
This is a game that has been won in midfield. Atletico Madrid haven't been able to get near Kroos and Modric in the centre of the pitch. They have been the engine for Real Madrid.
- OffToni KroosReal Madrid
- OnDani CeballosReal Madrid
One final change from Solari and Ceballos comes on for Kroos, who has been excellent.
- Red cardThomas ParteyAtlético Madrid
SENT OFF! Atletico Madrid are reduced to 10 men and that should be that. Partey trods on the foot of Kroos and the midfielder is shown a second yellow card. That's game over.
It's too late for Real Madrid to mount a title challenge and catch Barcelona at the top of the Liga table, but this will build momentum. They are still in the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.
Reguilon has played well this afternoon. The youngster has made a real impression since coming into the Real Madrid team a few weeks ago. Who needs Marcelo?
The Real Madrid resurgence under Solari continues. There were real questions asked of the manager after that defeat to Sociedad last month, but what a response they have made.
Bale has been questioned in recent weeks. The Welshman has lost his place in the Real Madrid first team to Vinicius and Vazquez, but that was a really great finish from Bale.
- GoalGareth BaleReal Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Atletico Madrid 1 Real Madrid 3 (75 mins - Gareth Bale). It's a third goal for Real Madrid and it's Bale! That might well be the points secured for the visitors. Modric slotted the pass through to Bale, who take one touch and then fired a low finish into the far corner of Oblak's net!
- Yellow cardSaúlAtlético Madrid
Saul becomes the sixth Atletico Madrid player to enter the referee's book. They just keep coming.
Kalinic has struggled to make a mark at Atletico Madrid this season and has been knocked down the pecking order following the signing of Morata, but he has 18 minutes here.
- OffÁlvaro MorataAtlético Madrid
- OnNikola KalinicAtlético Madrid
Off comes Morata, who receives warm applause from the home fans inside the Wanda Metropolitano.
- Yellow cardÁlvaro MorataAtlético Madrid
Morata is shown a yellow card for barging over Ramos. That's five Atleti players now in the book.
No penalty! The Atletico Madrid players aren't happy. Morata looked to be tripped in the box by Casemiro, but the referee has actually given the freekick the way of Real Madrid! He spotted a handball.
- Yellow cardLuka ModricReal Madrid
Modric is the latest player to be shown a yellow card for a foul. I'll let you when some actual football happens.
PICTURE: Ramos celebrates his penalty goal with some sort of dance. He's no Griezmann, that's for sure.
- OffÁngel CorreaAtlético Madrid
- OnRodriAtlético Madrid
Off comes Correa, who offered Atletico Madrid little, and he is replaced by Rodri.
- Yellow cardSergio ReguilónReal Madrid
And now it's Reguilon who is shown a yellow card for bringing down Juanfran as he skipped past him.
The game has got quite disjointed all of a sudden. The changes from the bench haven't helped and the fouls are also breaking up the match. Both teams going through the motions right now.
- Yellow cardThomas ParteyAtlético Madrid
Partey can have no complaints about that. He went in high on Reguilon and the yellow card is flashed.
Big save from Courtois! The freekick delivery from the left side bounced through to the back post. The angle was tight for Gimenez, but his powerful shot forced the near post save!
- OffThomas LemarAtlético Madrid
- OnVitoloAtlético Madrid
And now Simeone makes a change, with Vitolo coming on for Lemar. I forgot that Lemar was even playing.
- Yellow cardLucas HernándezAtlético Madrid
It's heating up out there now. Hernandez deliberately went in hard on Carvajal and takes the yellow card.
- OffVinícius JúniorReal Madrid
- OnGareth BaleReal Madrid
Solari makes his first change and it's Bale who comes on for the impressive Vinicius.
What a shame for Morata. He has had it tough this season. That would have been a big moment for him, but the goal was called back. Will that give his confidence a boost, though?
The goal DOESN'T stand! After a delay in play allowing for the officials to look at the goal, the offside call is made. It's the right decision. Morata was indeed offside when the pass was made.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... IS IT? What a brilliant goal by Morata. The Atletico Madrid forward was played in behind and lobbed Courtois, but the officials are going to use VAR to look at it.
Asensio and Bale have been sent to warm up by Solari. Might Real Madrid be about to make a change? Things are working pretty well for them at the moment, so maybe not.
Real Madrid are looking to gain some control in this second half. They are zipping the ball around the centre of the pitch, which is something they didn't do all that often in the first half.
It's just not happening for Morata at the moment. It's almost as if he is trying too hard to make a good impression. Confidence is a problem for the striker. It's quite tough to watch.
Wasteful from Morata! The pass through from Griezmann was perfect, but the on loan Chelsea striker's first touch sends him wide and his shot is high and wide of the target! Poor.
No changes made by both managers. Atletico Madrid have 45 minutes to ensure that they don't lose their first home match of the Liga season. This has become a fortress for them.
- 2nd Half
The second half is under way! Real Madrid have a 2-1 lead over Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.
What did you make of the first half at the Wanda Metropolitano? Can Simeone feel aggrieved by that penalty award? Do Real Madrid deserve to be ahead at this stage? Tweet me!
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Atletico Madrid 1-2 Real Madrid. What an opening 45 minutes of football. Real Madrid have the edge, but on the whole it has been quite an even game up to this point.
What a run it was from Vinicius to draw the foul that led to the penalty kick. The Brazilian gives Real Madrid so much. He commits defenders and forces them into difficult positions.
Two minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the first half.
- Yellow cardJosé María GiménezAtlético Madrid
Gimenez was shown a yellow card for the foul that brought Vinicius down in the penalty box.
- Goal by penaltySergio RamosReal Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Atletico Madrid 1 Real Madrid 2 (42 mins - Sergio Ramos pen). No Panenka from Ramos this time! The Real Madrid captain scores his 11th goal of the season by firing a low finish into the bottom left corner of the Atletico Madrid net. Oblak stood no chance of saving that one! Real are ahead again.
The penalty stands! The officials have had a look at the VAR footage and they have decided that the foul from Gimenez has continued into the box and Ramos will have a chance from the spot.
Well, replays show that this foul might well have happened outside of the box. Let's see what happens here. It's a foul, no doubt about that, but did it happen outside of the area?
PENALTY KICK TO REAL MADRID! Vinicius goes round Gimenez down the outside and the Atleti defender hauls him down! The referee points to the spot. It's going to VAR, though.
PICTURE: Griezmann celebrates equalising for Atletico Madrid.
Vinicius is still so raw, which is understandable given that he is still a teenager, but he gives Real Madrid something different. He gives them an outlet to stretch the pitch in seconds.
Over from Griezmann! The French attacker tried to improvise a finish there at the back post, but his knee'd effort goes over the bar. That's all Griezmann could really do with that corner.
Atletico Madrid have been revitalised by the equaliser. They are now on top, with Griezmann in particular making great runs in behind the static Real Madrid defensive line.
Naughty from Morata! Carvajal and Morata are good friends, but the Atletico Madrid forward cleaned out the Real Madrid full back as he chased down a ball at the byline.
Correa can't keep it down! That was an opportunity for the Atletico Madrid forward. The ball bounced high and so he had to take it early, but Correa shoots over from the edge of the box.
The composure that Griezmann showed in slotting the finish right through the legs of Courtois was sensational. He meant it. Some players get lucky with the nutmeg on the keeper, but this wasn't luck.
PICTURE: Casemiro gives Real Madrid the lead with an overhead kick.
What a game we have on our hands here. Atletico Madrid have put up the perfect response to losing that early goal. The Wanda Metropolitano is rocking, just like the old Vicente Calderon used to.
GOAL STANDS! The officials have looked at the VAR review and they have allowed the goal to stand. They were looking for an offside, but Ramos kept Griezmann onside! We're level.
- GoalAntoine GriezmannAtlético Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Atletico Madrid 1 (25 mins - Antoine Griezmann) Real Madrid 1. An equaliser! Is it going to stand? We are going to a VAR review here! Correa threaded through Griezmann, who kept his composure and slotted the low finish through the legs of Courtois. But will this stand?
- Yellow cardAntoine GriezmannAtlético Madrid
And now Griezmann enters the book for a frustrated foul on Casemiro.
- Yellow cardLucas VázquezReal Madrid
Vazquez is shown the first yellow card of the match for a follow through as he tried to get on the end of that Vinicius cross.
Vinicius gets to the byline! The Brazilian is starting to warm to the task now, beating Godin to get to the byline and square a pass into the middle. Nobody was on hand to convert, though.
Atletico Madrid made a fast start to this match, but Real Madrid have weathered the storm and are now looking comfortable in their surroundings. They have the lead and are on top.
What a sensational cross! Vinicius finds Vazquez with a wonderful outside of the boot cross from the left wing, but he couldn't quite direct his effort on target. That was amazing.
That's more like the Casemiro we know. The ball was there to be won and the Brazilian goes clattering into Correa, with the referee giving the freekick to Atletico Madrid. Derbi antics.
What a finish that was from Casemiro, but the defending from Atletico Madrid left much to be desired. The Real Madrid midfielder was completely unmarked about eight yards out.
- GoalCasemiroReal Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Atletico Madrid 0 Real Madrid 1 (16 mins - Casemiro). It's a breakthrough for Real Madrid and it has come from an unlikely source! Kroos' corner kick was headed into the air by Ramos and Casemiro, of all people, was on hand to fire home an overhead kick. The visitors have the lead!
PICTURE: Courtois picking up the missiles (toy rats) being thrown at him.
Two players down! Carvajal and Lemar collide and now the two players are down. They should be fine to continue, but they will require some treatment before the game can get started again.
Header across goal! Carvajal made a diagonal pass into the box, where Modric got on the end of the lofted ball. His header back across goal was meant for Benzema, but it was too high.
High and wide! Partey bursts into the box after linking up well with Griezmann, but the Atletico Madrid midfielder fires high and wide of the target. Courtois wasn't bothered by that.
Of course, the impact that Vinicius has made since coming into the Real Madrid starting lineup has been astonishing. The Brazilian has forged a real understanding with Benzema.
It's taken Vinicius eight minutes to make his first touch of the game and it's a flick that gives the ball away. This will be a different sort of match for the Brazilian teenager.
There's already a real edge to this match. Some flying tackles and ankle clipping going on. This is a real rivalry that has reached new heights over the past few years. What a fixture.
Solari has decided to drop Marcelo for this game, with the youngster Reguilon coming in for the Brazilian left back. This will be a real test for him. He has been in good form of late.
That was a deflection! Griezmann has his first sight of goal after being played in by Partey. His finds the side netting, but it was deflected by Kroos. The officials don't spot it, though.
Real Madrid come into this game in good form. The introduction of Vinicius to the first team has given them fresh energy. They managed to muster 1-1 draw against Barca during the week.
What a pre-match atmosphere that was at the Wanda Metropolitano. There was a fear that Atleti would lose something by leaving the Vicente Calderon, but on this basis, not a bit of it.
- 1st Half
The match is under way! It's the Derbi. It's Atletico Madrid against Real Madrid in this La Liga fixture.
Okay, here we go. About to get started at the Wanda Metropolitano. Kick off is just seconds away.
Who do you fancy to win this one? Atletico Madrid are still involved in the title race at the top of La Liga, but this is about more than just league position.
Not long until kick off at the Wanda Metropolitano. What an arena this is and what a fixture this is.
Isco isn't even on the bench for Real Madrid this afternoon. The playmaker is now claiming that he is being treated unfairly by Solari and, well, he might actually have a case.
Here's a piece of information for you... five of the Atletico Madrid matchday squad today were at one point or another on the books of Real Madrid - Morata, Luis, Juanfran, Saul and Adan.
Real Madrid's record in recent Madrid derbies has been really poor. In fact, they have only won one of their last 14 (FOURTEEN) league and cup games against their city rivals.
Marcelo benched! In a way, it's not a surprise to see the Brazilian left out of the Real Madrid lineup such has been his form of late, but still. It's a big call from Solari to leave out such an experienced performer.
