This was a peak Atletico Madrid performance and result. They defended well and took their chance when it was presented to them. However, the hosts deserved to win. Barcelona just didn't offer enough. How many chances did Barca actually create? Not many at all.

FULL TIME: Atletico Madrid 1-0 Barcelona
Simeone is so close to his first victory over Barcelona. This would be a hugely significant result and would extend Atletico Madrid's unbeaten run in La Liga to 24 games. Seconds to go.
Is there one last chance left in this match for Barcelona? They have struggled throughout to create, but Atletico Madrid are camped deep inside their own half here.
There will be five minutes of stoppage time at the end of the match.
Roberto with the effort! The Barcelona midfielder takes aim from 25 yards out, his strike picked up a deflect, Oblak was wrong-footed, but it flashes comfortably wide in the end.
- OffÁngel CorreaAtlético Madrid
- OnGeoffrey KondogbiaAtlético Madrid
Kondogbia comes on for Atletico Madrid following his transfer from Valencia.
- OffJoão FélixAtlético Madrid
- OnThomas LemarAtlético Madrid
Simeone responds with a change of his own, with Lemar coming on for the final few minutes.
- OffMiralem PjanicFC Barcelona
- OnMartin BraithwaiteFC Barcelona
And another change from Koeman. On comes Braithwaite. He's throwing everything at this!
- OffAntoine GriezmannFC Barcelona
- OnFrancisco TrincãoFC Barcelona
Here comes Trincao for Barcelona as Koeman makes some late changes.
The problem for Barcelona is the more players they send forward in search of an equaliser, the more space they leave in behind for Atletico Madrid to exploit on the break.
Header from Griezmann! Messi gets a good cross into the box from the right side, Griezmann gets on the end of it, but the header from the Frenchman ends up in Oblak's gloves.
- Yellow cardJosé María GiménezAtlético Madrid
Atletico Madrid really need to watch themselves now. Gimenez is into the book.
- Yellow cardStefan SavicAtlético Madrid
Savic is shown a yellow card as some tempers start to fray. Atleti need to keep their cool.
There's 10 minutes left in this one and it doesn't feel like Barcelona are banging on the door. Atletico Madrid seem quite comfortable. The Catalans are struggling to create much.
Messi shot is blocked! Dembele finds the Barcelona number 10 on the edge of the Atletico Madrid box, but Savic comes out to make the important block. He had a sight of goal.
In seasons gone by, Simeone would have surely attempted to shore his match up with a defensive change of strategy. But the Argentine has just introduced another forward off the bench!
- OffMarcos LlorenteAtlético Madrid
- OnDiego CostaAtlético Madrid
This is an interesting change from Simeone - Costa on for Llorente.
PICTURE: Carrasco's goal is still the difference
Carrasco with the shot! The Belgian wing back found a lot of space down the left side, cut inside past Dest, but his shot was ultimately well wide of the far post. Decent opportunity.
Braithwaite and Trincao are warming up down the touchline. Might Koeman throw on either player for the final 20 minutes as Barcelona chase down an all-important equaliser?
Dest is giving Barcelona more of an outlet down the right side. The American international has settled well at the Camp Nou following his summer move from Ajax.
This is a bit better from Barcelona as they are camped on the edge of the opposition box. But Atletico Madrid are inviting pressure on top of themselves. This is part of their plan.
So it looks like Dest has gone to right back with Roberto moving into the centre of midfield and de Jong staying at centre back alongside Lenglet. This is makeshift!
Dembele wide! The ball popped out to the French winger, he took the shot first time, but Dembele never really caught that correctly and Oblak watches it flash well wide of the target.
- OffGerard PiquéFC Barcelona
- OnSergiño DestFC Barcelona
There's the expected change from Koeman and it's Dest who comes on for the injured Pique.
Barcelona are down to 10 men for the time being. De Jong has slotted in alongside Lenglet until Koeman makes a change from the bench. It looks like it will be Dest who comes on.
Indeed, this doesn't look good for Pique. He's in tears as he walks off the pitch. Barcelona will be without their main man at the back for the rest of the match, and for how long after that?
That's a sore one! Pique is down on the ground after taking the full weight of Correa on his leg. This is bad news for Barcelona. The central defender looks like he'll have to come off here.
He should have scored! What an opportunity for Barcelona to restore parity! Messi's right-footed cross was perfect for Lenglet, but the defender could only find the gloves of Oblak from five yards out!
- OffPedriFC Barcelona
- OnPhilippe CoutinhoFC Barcelona
On comes Coutinho for the final 30 minutes. Can he make a difference for Barcelona?
PICTURE: Carrasco rounds Ter Stegen for the first goal
There is some activity on the Barcelona bench. It appears Coutinho is going to come on for the Catalans. Might the Brazilian playmaker make a difference? Barca need something.
Atletico Madrid are in control of this match at the moment. They aren't creating much, but their pressing game is impressive. They aren't allowing Barcelona to get near their goal.
Barcelona need much more from the likes of Dembele and Pedri. Both players started the match well, but they have faded quickly. Might Koeman be tempted into some changes?
Atletico Madrid look like the real this season. In a season where the title race could be a war of attrition, Simeone's side look to be well equipped. A win here would underline their credentials.
PICTURE: Messi has been quiet this evening
What was Ter Stegen doing for the Atletico Madrid goal? The German goalkeeper came soooo far off his line. The task for Carrasco was made easy and he finished into the empty net.
This was the goal...
Barcelona need to be much better in this second half. There's still plenty football to be played in this one, but the Catalans have to create much more in the attacking third.
The second half is under way! Atletico Madrid have a 1-0 lead over Barcelona in this La Liga fixture.
What did you make of the first half at the Wanda Metropolitano? Does Koeman need to make changes to his Barcelona team? Are Atleti just the better team here? Tweet me your thoughts!
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Atletico Madrid 1-0 Barcelona. Carrasco's goal right at the end of the first half has given Atleti the lead. What will the response from Koeman and his players be?
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Atletico Madrid 1 (45+3' - Yannick Carrasco) Barcelona 0. Atletico Madrid have the lead right at the end of the first half! What was Ter Stegen doing so far off his line? Correa played Carrasco in behind the Barcelona defence, he still had a long way to go, but Ter Stegen made it easy for him! Carrasco rounded him 35 yards out and finished into the empty net! Atleti are 1-0 up!
Actually, Dembele is back on the pitch, but he's staying as far away from the ball as possible. Might the French winger be withdrawn at the half time interval?
Barcelona are down to 10 men for the final few minutes of the first half. Dembele looks to have hurt himself in a challenge with Carrasco and he's away to receive some treatment.
There will be three minutes of stoppage time played at the end of the first half.
Messi has struggled for goals so far this season. There has been a lot of talk about his relationship with Koeman. Keep in mind he can sign a pre-contract with another club in January.
Chance for Messi! Alba plays the pass through for Messi, the angle was very tight for him. He wanted to play the pass, but there was nobody. Messi shoots, but Oblak saves at the near post.
There were a lot of raised eyebrows when Carrasco returned to Atletico Madrid in January, but the Belgian has since been a consistent first team performer for Simeone.
Carrasco pulls it back! The Belgian wing back was in behind, he could have taken on the shot himself, but squared it for Correa. Barcelona had enough bodies back to make the tackle.
Messi is being left isolated in this system. He is playing as the furthest forward Barcelona player, but his teammates are struggling to get up and support him.
There hasn't been a great deal of penalty box action in the last 10 to 15 minutes. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are cancelling each other out at the moment. A good contest, though.
Atletico Madrid are missing Suarez. The Uruguayan striker has settled in well in his new surroundings, joining Atleti from Barcelona in the summer. He has played well alongside Felix.
PICTURE: Atleti have had chances
Barcelona are doing a much better job of getting back in numbers to stop Atletico Madrid's deep runners. That what was causing the Catalans so many issues in the early stages.
The referee appears to have some sort of technical issue and is walking over to the sideline. Bit of confusion over what is going on here. He is taking a look at the monitor. Hmmm...
- Yellow cardYannick CarrascoAtlético Madrid
Carrasco is shown the second yellow card of the night. He's in the book.
Llorente has become a key figure for Atletico Madrid since his performance to knock out Liverpool in the Champions League at Anfield last season. He's now more of an attacking player.
PICTURE: Still awaiting the breakthrough
This was an open encounter in the first 10-15 minutes, with both sides creating good scoring chances, but it has tightened up since then. Atleti and Barca pretty well-matched.
Could this be how Barcelona's midfield looks for the rest of the season? Busquets is out injured and so Pjanic has come in to partner de Jong in the centre of the pitch.
Griezmann has been quiet in the early stages of this match. The Frenchman has been at the centre of controversy recently after comments from his father about Messi.
Barcelona seem to be playing split strikers. Messi is playing on the left and Griezmann is on the right. This is giving Pedri an opportunity to burst through the middle from deep.
Dembele looked as good as finished as a Barcelona player not so long ago, but Ansu's injury means the French winger will almost certainly receive more game time over the next few weeks.
This match has been played at a great pace so far. Atletico Madrid have been the better of the two teams, but Barcelona also look dangerous whenever they come forward.
PICTURE: Still goalless in Madrid
Messi clipped effort! Only the Barcelona number 10 would even attempt something like that, with Messi attempting to chip Oblak. But the ball flashes over the crossbar. Decent idea.
Of course, there's no Ansu for Barcelona this evening. The youngster is out for the next four months through injury. He will be a big miss. He had been one of Barca's best players.
It's Atletico Madrid who are taking the game to Barcelona at the moment. They have so many runners from deep when they have the ball and that is giving the Catalans some issues.
Off the crossbar! Atletico Madrid are getting closer and closer here! Llorente was played in behind, the angle was still relatively tight, but his powerful strike clips the top of the bar and goes over!
Cross into the middle! Llorente drives to the byline and gets the ball into the middle, but Roberto was on hand to make the intervention. Great play by the Atletico Madrid midfielder.
- Yellow cardKokeAtlético Madrid
Koke is shown the first yellow card of the night for a foul on Dembele.
This has been an exciting start to this match. Barcelona began things on the front foot, but Atletico Madrid have created a chance of their own. Ter Stegen was called upon.
SAUL... saved! What a strike that was from the Atletico Madrid midfielder! Saul struck it so well on the edge of the box, but Ter-Stegen made a stunning diving save at his near post. What a stop!
As mentioned in the build-up, there is no sign of Suarez this evening. That's a shame for Atletico Madrid. The Uruguayan has struck up a very good understanding with Felix this season.
Griezmann just over! A decent chance for the Frenchman to open the scoring against his former club, but Griezmann sends his shot over the crossbar from a Dembele cross into the middle.
There has been a lot of talk over Atletico Madrid's credentials as potential title challengers. A victory over Barcelona this evening would certainly underline those credentials.
- 1st Half
The match is under way! It's Atletico Madrid against Barcelona in this La Liga fixture at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Okay, here we go. We are about to get under way at the Wanda Metropolitano. Kick off is just moments away.
No Suarez for Atletico Madrid tonight due to a positive Covid-19 test. That is a big blow for the capital club.
Not long until kick off at the Wanda Metropolitano. Which way do you see this one going?
Felix has been in exceptional form for Atletico Madrid recently. There is a sense the Portuguese attacker is starting to justify the massive transfer fee paid to Benfica for him last summer.
Pedri starts! The 17-year-old has quickly become a first team figure for Barcelona under Koeman this season and he starts again this evening. He will be the number 10 in the system.
I'm Graham Ruthven and you can catch me on Twitter ahead of the match to let me know your thoughts. Are Atleti slight favourites for this one? What do you make of Koeman's team? Tweet me!
Big game! This is one of the matches of the season in Spain. Atletico Madrid have made a good start to the season, while Barcelona are struggling for consistency under Koeman. This should be good!
