Real Madrid had to work for it, but they get the win in the end to get their La Liga title defence up and running. The sending off of Emerson helped, as did the controversial award of a penalty kick for a handball by Bartra, but Zidane can be very pleased with the character shown by his players. Betis played well.

It appears Real Betis might have missed their chance here. There is no sign of another scoring opportunity coming their way as Real Madrid watch the clock tick down to full time.

Real Madrid now have the ball at their feet and they are slowing things down in the midfield in an attempt to see out this victory which will get their title defence up and running.

Canales has taken a grip of things for Real Betis as they attempt to find an equaliser. Real Madrid are quite happy for the home side to have the ball in their half, though.

Mandi is shown a yellow card, presumably for something he said to the referee.

Well, there is certainly still time for Real Betis to find an equaliser here. They have seven more minutes of stoppage time and they have plenty of attacking threats on the pitch.

There will be EIGHT minutes of stoppage time played at the end of the match.

Modric has made a massive difference to this Real Madrid team since coming on at the break. This has been a reminder of how the Croatian is still so important to his side.

Real Madrid have a man advantage here after the dismissal of Emerson, but the away side look tired and Real Betis aren't completely out of this just yet. Can they produce one more chance?

There was also a question of offside against Moyoral as he was released into the penalty area before Bartra handled the ball. That was in almost every way a controversial call!

PENALTY KICK TO REAL MADRID! The referee has decided Bartra handled the ball to stop Mayoral getting a shot away on goal! That is a very harsh decision on the Betis defender!

Big tackle! Carvajal and Tello clash, but it's not entirely clear who kicked who. Tello is the one who is on the ground on pain, but the replays show that Carvajal didn't make much contact.
