That win takes Real Madrid to the top of La Liga, although Atletico Madrid still have three games in hand over their city rivals. This was a very good performance from the reigning champions. Asensio and Vazquez were the key men for Real Madrid. Zidane will be pleased with that.

FULL TIME: Real Madrid 2-0 Celta Vigo
Mariano comes on for the final minutes of this match. The TV camera shows Jovic sat in the stands. He won't get a minute of action. Surely his Real Madrid career is as good as over?
Over the bar! That was a good opportunity for Benzema to add his name to the score sheet, he opened up the space for the shot, but the Frenchman put his strike over the crossbar.
- Yellow cardCasemiroReal Madrid
Casemiro picks up a late booking, but this game is as good as done.
- OffToni KroosReal Madrid
- OnFederico ValverdeReal Madrid
Here comes Valverde as Zidane gives some of his key figures a small rest at the end of the match.
Militao is also on for the final few minutes as Zidane empties his bench.
- OffDani CarvajalReal Madrid
- OnVinícius JúniorReal Madrid
A change for Real Madrid and Vinicius comes on for the final stages.
- Yellow cardDani CarvajalReal Madrid
Carvajal is shown a yellow card of taking too long walking off the pitch.
Hazard is close to regaining full fitness. This has been the story of the Belgian’s Real Madrid career to date. He is close to being labelled a flop. Hazard has played only a handful of games this season. These minutes are precious for him.
There are still questions over this Real Madrid team’s lack of identity or overarching ideology, but Zidane knows how to get the best out of this group of players. He squeezes everything out of them.
Modric and Ramos have been key to Real Madrid’s recent recovery. Varane is lost without Ramos alongside him and Modric is still the Spanish champions’ primary creator through the middle.
Mina shoots wide! That's Celta Vigo's best chance of the second half. Modric was beaten to a ball in the centre of the pitch, Mina spun on the edge of the box, but he struck wide.
There is still a lot of talk about Modric and Ramos’ future at Real Madrid. Both players are out of contract at the end of the 2020/21 season, but they are still key figures for Zidane.
That was a very impressive performance from Asensio. He created the opening goal for Vazquez and then scored the second himself. The 24-year-old has found some good form!
- OffMarco AsensioReal Madrid
- OnEden HazardReal Madrid
Asensio's game is over and Hazard comes on for the final 15 minutes.
One of the most baffling things about Jovic’s failure to settle in at Real Madrid is that Zidane could really use another striker to ease some of the burden on Benzema.
Jovic is another player who could feasibly be on his way out of Real Madrid in the January transfer window. It just hasn’t happened for the Serbian centre forward in the Spanish capital.
Isco has most recently been linked with a move to Arsenal. It’s certainly true that the Gunners could use a creative midfielder in his role, but Isco hasn’t been at his best for a couple seasons now.
Talking of January, there could be a number of players on their way out at the Santiago Bernabeu. Isco is one such player. The playmaker has faced questions over his fitness and even his weight this season.

A change for Celta Vigo and it's Baeza who comes on. Did Nolito pick up an injury?
The January transfer window is now open, but Real Madrid aren’t expected to be busy, at least in terms of players coming into the club. Instead, they are expected to be plotting for the summer window.
Just past the post! A well worked move by Real Madrid sees Benzema played in behind the Celta Vigo defence, but he drags his low shot across goal and inches wide of the far post.
PICTURE: Vazquez headed the opener
The withdrawal of Aspas has robbed Celta Vigo of any real threat in the attacking third. He has been one of the best players in La Liga this season. Let's hope it's not a serious injury.
Zidane is often mocked for favouring Vazquez over more illustrious, naturally talented players in his position, but you know what you get with the winger. He is a reliable, consistent performer.
Vazquez has been one of the great success stories of the last few weeks for Real Madrid. At first, he was filling in for the injured Carvajal at right back, but he has kept his place in the lineup. Playing well again tonight.
The injury to Rodrygo likely means Asensio will receive more game time over the next few weeks. Just as the Brazilian winger was really starting to contribute, he is sidelined for the time being.
Asensio has been very good this evening and now he has a goal to go with his assist from the first half. The Spain international is finding form after a very difficult 2020.
- GoalMarco AsensioReal Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Real Madrid 1 (53 mins - Marco Asensio) Celta Vigo 0. It's a second goal for Real Madrid! Celta Vigo gave up the ball cheaply inside their own half, Vazquez played the pass into Asensio who was completely free inside the box and he made no mistake in sweeping a finish Blanco and into the net!
- OffIago AspasRC Celta
- OnFran BeltranRC Celta
And here's the change. It's Beltran who comes on for Aspas and that's a change of system.
- Yellow cardNachoReal Madrid
Nacho is booked for the tackle on Aspas, who is coming off.
Aspas injury! This is bad news for Celta Vigo. Aspas has picked up an injury here after a challenge by Nacho and the away side are going to be forced into a change. He's been in such good form!
PICTURE: Vazquez's goal is still the difference
Close to being in! Benzema attempted to thread a pass through to Asensio, but there was just a little too much on the ball and Celta Vigo were able to recover and make the clearance.
Asensio played well in the draw against Elche a few days ago. Injuries have been a problem for him over the last year or two, but the Spain international is gradually finding his form again.
What will the second half bring? Real Madrid have been very conservative so far this evening. Celta Vigo have seen 58% of possession, but the hosts have been content to let them have it.
- 2nd Half
The second half is under way! Real Madrid have a 1-0 lead over Celta Vigo in this La Liga fixture.
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Real Madrid 1-0 Celta Vigo. Vazquez's goal is the difference between the two teams at the break. Zidane will be pleased with how his players have executed the game plan so far.
- Yellow cardRenato TapiaRC Celta
Tapia is shown a yellow card for a late tackle on Modric in the centre of the pitch.
- Yellow cardMarco AsensioReal Madrid
It should be noted Asensio was booked a few moments ago for a foul 25 yards out from goal.
Caught in two minds! Asensio played the pass into Benzema, but the French striker couldn't decide whether to play the ball back to his teammate or shoot. In the end he did neither.
At first, it seemed Real Madrid had made Valdebebas something of a fortress. Their home form was good after lockdown, but they have suffered some poor performances at home this season.
The Santiago Bernabeu is currently being redeveloped and so Real Madrid took the opportunity to accelerate that redevelopment with no supporters in the stands for the time being.
It was also a strange year because Real Madrid played the majority of their home games at the Estadio Alfredo di Stefano at their training ground, which was never the original plan.
2020 was a strange year for Real Madrid. They were crowned Spanish games in July, but their form was patchy throughout the year. They only made it to the last 16 of the Champions League too.
This has been a conservative performance from Real Madrid so far. They are standing off Celta Vigo and allowing them to play until they get into the opposition half. A lot of respect.
Casemiro is often typecast as a defensive midfielder, and that’s what his position is on paper. But the Brazilian has added goals to his game in the last two seasons. He loves a big goal in a big moment.
It’s not just Modric who has been brilliant recently. Casemiro and Kroos have also upped their performance levels of late as Real Madrid have turned around their season with some good results.
Coudet will want more from his players in an attacking sense. As I have already said, Celta Vigo are seeing plenty of the ball, but they aren't doing a great deal with it in the final third.
Penalty claim! Tapia believes Celta Vigo should have been awarded a spot kick for what he viewed as a handball by Mendy, but the Real Madrid left back had his arm right down by his side.
PICTURE: Vazquez opened the scoring
Modric was the best player in that game away to Elche just a few days ago. The Croatian scored the opening goal and has been in exceptional form over the last month or so. Brilliant, recently.
Celta Vigo are seeing plenty of the ball in this first half, but they aren't doing a great deal with it. This will be very comfortable for Zidane. His side are keeping the visitors at arm's length.
The problem there is that Real Madrid have looked a bit leggy in their last two games as Zidane has stayed away from rotating his squad at the single busiest time of the whole season.
Since then the recovery from Real Madrid has been good as they embarked on a winning run of six games. Zidane has achieved this impressive turnaround by relying on a core of consistent performers.
It’s not so long ago that Zidane looked as good as finished as Real Madrid. The defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk left his side on the brink of Champions League elimination at the group stage.
This is Real Madrid’s first fixture of 2021. 2020 was a peculiar year for them. They were crowned La Liga winners in July, but their form was still patchy over the course of the 12 months.
Varane has previously struggled without Ramos alongside him. Remember the Champions League last 16 game against Manchester City last season? How will he cope without him tonight?
Nacho plays at the heart of the Real Madrid defence this evening. This says a lot about how far down the pecking order Militao has fallen. The outlook is rather bleak for the former Porto man now.
PICTURE: Benzema has been in good form
Celta Vigo started the match well. They had that opportunity through Aspas and then Real Madrid took the lead seconds later. But the away side are controlling possession again.
Zidane’s decision-making in that draw away to Elche was very peculiar and was the focus of some scrutiny afterwards. Despite Real Madrid looking tired, Zidane didn’t make a change until 13 minutes from the end!
Real Madrid had been on a run of six successive wins before they were held away to Elche on December 30. The defending champions looked a bit weary in that game and dropped two points as a result. Better expected tonight.
Vazquez is out of contract at the end of the season. There was a report today that Leeds United want to sign him in the summer. Surely Real Madrid want let him leave when he's in this form?!
- GoalLucas VázquezReal Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Real Madrid 1 (6 mins - Lucas Vazquez) Celta Vigo 0. Real Madrid have taken the lead! They countered after Aspas had a shot cleared off the line. Asensio played the cross to the back post and Vazquez was on hand to head home from a narrow angle! Blanco couldn't get there!
Off the line! Nolito plays a wonderful clipped pass over the top for Aspas, but his shot is cleared off the line by Nacho who was back behind Courtois to provide some emergency cover!
Aspas is the main danger man Real Madrid need to be wary of this evening. The former Liverpool forward has nine goals and six assists in just 16 league appearances so far this season.
Celta Vigo are a team that can certainly give Real Madrid some problems this evening. The Galicians are sitting eighth in the La Liga table, a big improvement on the previous two seasons.
This promises to be one of the most interesting games in La Liga this weekend. Celta Vigo have won five of their last seven games under new head coach Coudet. Impressive form.
