FULL TIME: Celta Vigo 1-2 Atletico Madrid
- Red cardMario HermosoAtlético Madrid
SENT OFF! And Hermoso has also been shown a straight red card! That was quite something! Both teams down to 10 men in stoppage time and this one isn't over yet!
- Red cardHugo MalloRC Celta
SENT OFF! There's a brawl on the pitch in stoppage time at Balaidos and it looks like Mallo has been shown a straight red card for his part in it! Drama at the end of this match!
PICTURE: Correa has been the difference!
- Yellow cardJosé FontánRC Celta
Yellow cards all over the place now - Fontan into the book!
There will be SEVEN minutes of stoppage time played at the end of the match!
- OffJavi GalánRC Celta
- OnMiguel BaezaRC Celta
Galan was pretty impressive on his La Liga debut for Celta, but he's now being withdrawn.
- OffMarcos LlorenteAtlético Madrid
- OnRenan LodiAtlético Madrid
Lodi is on for Atletico Madrid as they attempt to see out this victory.
For all that Atletico Madrid seem intent on adding another forward to their squad before the transfer window closes, they already have an excellent option in Correa. He has proved that!
Moussa Dembele signed for Atletico Madrid on loan from Lyon in January, but he has since returned to his parent club. This means Simeone is a little lighter in terms of attacking options.
Barcelona and Real Madrid look weak this season. Could it be that Sevilla put up the biggest fight against Atletico Madrid in the title race at the top of La Liga? Atleti have the target on their back.
- Yellow cardDenis SuárezRC Celta
It should be noted that Denis was shown a yellow card a few moments ago.
Simeone has attempted to move his Atletico Madrid team away from their conservative roots in recent seasons. Indeed, this is a different Atleti side to the one that won the title in 2014.
There has been speculation that Atletico Madrid are in the market to add another striker to their squad to ease the burden on Suarez, but that move has yet to materialise.
Big chance for Aspas! That was a golden opportunity for Aspas to equalise for Celta Vigo, but he somehow managed to find the side netting when he should have beaten Oblak.
However, Suarez is now into the twilight of his career and there is increasing doubt over his fitness (he missed a chunk of last season through injury). Can Atleti count on him this season?
Of course, the surprising signing of Suarez from Barcelona last summer made all the difference for Atletico Madrid as the Uruguayan striker fired the club to the La Liga title.
- OffBrais MéndezRC Celta
- OnFran BeltranRC Celta
Beltran is also on for Celta Vigo to shore up the centre of the pitch.
- OffRenato TapiaRC Celta
- OnAugusto SolariRC Celta
A change for Celta Vigo now with Solari on for the final 15 minutes.
Many wanted Luis Enrique to use Llorente in midfield during Euro 2020, but he didn’t seem to like the chaos he brings to the attacking third. That, however, is perfect for Simeone.
The turnaround in Llorente’s career has been quite incredible. He was signed from Real Madrid as a holding midfielder, but has turned into one of the best attacking midfielders in Spain.
Llorente was one of Atletico Madrid’s brightest stars as they won the league title last season. However, he didn’t have the best of tournaments for Spain at Euro 2020 where he was played at right back.
- OffKokeAtlético Madrid
- OnKieran TrippierAtlético Madrid
And here's Trippier as well, who has moved over to the right side of the defence.
- OffThomas LemarAtlético Madrid
- OnRodrigo De PaulAtlético Madrid
De Paul has also been introduced off the bench by Simeone for his La Liga debut!
- OffÁngel CorreaAtlético Madrid
- OnLuis SuárezAtlético Madrid
Here comes some changes for Atletico Madrid - Suarez is on for the champions!
- GoalÁngel CorreaAtlético Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Celta Vigo 1 Atletico Madrid 2 (65 mins - Angel Correa). An instant response from Atletico Madrid! They weren't pegged back for long! An excellent counter attack sees Saul sweep the ball out to Correa and he finds the bottom corner of the Celta Vigo net with an exceptional low strike!
- OffNolitoRC Celta
- OnFranco CerviRC Celta
The Celta Vigo newbie Cervi is now on for Nolito. A very different feel to this match now!
- Yellow cardGeoffrey KondogbiaAtlético Madrid
Kondogba is shown a yellow card for a foul in the middle of the pitch.
Aspas scored 14 goals in La Liga for Celta Vigo last season. He missed out on a place in the Spain squad for the Euros and so should be well-rested for the new 2021/22 campaign.
- Yellow cardMarcos LlorenteAtlético Madrid
Llorente was shown a yellow card for the handball that led to the penalty kick.
- Goal by penaltyIago AspasRC Celta
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Celta Vigo 1 (59 mins - Iago Aspas pen) Atletico Madrid 1. Oblak is one of the best penalty stoppers there is, but Aspas simply waits for the Atletico Madrid goalkeeper to pick a side before slotting his spot kick into the opposite corner! Celta Vigo are now back on level terms at 1-1. Game on!
PENALTY KICK TO CELTA VIGO! Well, well, well - the referee has pointed to the spot and Llorente is furious with that! Easy to see why!
The referee is going to have a look at this one on the pitch-side monitor. Surprising that the remote VAR hasn't dismissed this already. It surely struck his leg first?
PENALTY DECISION! It looks like Llorente might have handled the ball at the back post from a cross, but did the ball strike his knee before it struck his arm? Looks like it. That has to be no penalty, no?
Joao Felix is missing through injury for Atletico Madrid this afternoon. This will be a make or break season for the Portuguese attacker who still hasn’t shown his best form for Atleti.
Many see De Paul as a replacement for Saul Niguez, who could be on his way out of the Wanda Metropolitano before the end of the summer transfer window in just over two weeks.
For all that Atletico Madrid impressed last season, there was a sense that Simeone hadn’t quite found the right balance in the centre of the pitch. De Paul could help with that!
De Paul is the most notable signing Atletico Madrid have made since the end of last season with the Argentine midfielder joining the Spanish club from Udinese. He could be a big player for them.
Trippier is one player who has been linked with a move away from Atletico Madrid amid interest from Manchester United, but the England international is still in Spain.
What will the second half at Balaidos offer us? Celta Vigo responded reasonably well to going behind in the first half, but Coudet will want his team to create more in front of goal.
- 2nd Half
The second half is under way! Atletico Madrid have a 1-0 lead over Celta Vigo after 45 minutes!
HALF TIME: Celta Vigo 0-1 Atletico Madrid. Correa's stunning strike after 23 minutes is the difference between the two teams at the half time interval. Atleti have the advantage!
To Celta Vigo's credit, they haven't faded after going behind. In the first half of last season, they surely would have wilted, but that hasn't happened so far this afternoon.
There will be three minutes of stoppage time played at the end of the first half.
That was a waste! The ball was played in behind for Carrasco, he had options in the middle, he could have taken on the shot himself, but his ball is a bad one and Celta clear.
PICTURE: Correa opened the scoring
Atletico Madrid are looking to put their foot on the ball at the end of this first half to prevent any sort of surge from Celta Vigo before the half time whistle comes.
Will we see Suarez at some point in the second half? The striker has watched this first half from the bench. He was given a longer break over the summer by Simeone.
This has the potential to be one of the best matches in La Liga this weekend. Celta Vigo were known for being one of the most exciting teams in Spain in the final stretch of last season. Hasn’t caught light yet...
Chance for Aspas! That was the first time Aspas has given Atletico Madrid a problem, but his toe-poke shot is saved by Oblak who was never going to be beaten by that effort.
The omens are good for Atletico Madrid this afternoon - they have stayed undefeated in 10 of the last 11 matches they have played against Celta Vigo in all competitions.
COOLING BREAK! It's a very warm afternoon in Galicia and we are now going to have a cooling break to allow the players to take on some much-needed water.
PICTURE: Koke has kept things ticking over
Coudet had a fully fit squad to pick from for this match. Celta Vigo have a talented squad and after a challenging couple seasons there is a sense that they are starting to build again.
What a goal this was!
Atletico Madrid are now sitting back and inviting the Celta Vigo possession on top of themselves. They have the advantage and Simeone wants his side to protect it.
Simeone will surely be rather pleased with what he has seen from his team in this first half so far. There has been a response from Celta Vigo, but Atletico Madrid are in control.
While Atletico Madrid start the season as La Liga champions, they have struggled through pre-season to get to this point. Will Simeone’s side be able to flick the switch on today? So far, so good!
That was an unstoppable finish from Correa. There isn't a goalkeeper in the game who would have been able to get a glove to that shot, never mind keep it out of the net!
- GoalÁngel CorreaAtlético Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Celta Vigo 0 Atletico Madrid 1 (23 mins - Angel Correa). The champions have taken the lead and what an incredible strike that is! Lemar did well to dribble through the midfield, he cut inside and played the pass to Correa and he lashed a strike into the top corner of the Celta Vigo net!
There is a real air of optimism around Celta Vigo heading into the 2021/22 season. Coudet turned the club around last season. Could Celta be in the mix for the European places?
Some nice play from Atletico Madrid on the edge of the box involving Llorente, but Fontan gets back to make the clearance and prevent the champions from getting a shot away.
PICTURE: Good contest so far at Balaidos!
It's a very strong bench for Atletico Madrid this afternoon. They have Suarez and Trippier on there. Will we see them later in this match as Simeone tries to get them up to speed?
While Barcelona and Real Madrid have lost key figures over the summer, Atletico Madrid have managed to keep their group together and have added to the squad with some signings.
There is a sense that after a bright start by Celta Vigo in front of their own fans, Atletico Madrid are starting to control more of the match. They are the favourites to win this, of course.
- Yellow cardThomas LemarAtlético Madrid
And now Lemar is shown a yellow card for digging his studs into Aspas, which wasn't as bad as it sounds.
You surely wouldn’t bet against Atletico Madrid finishing top of the pile in La Liga once again given how weak Barcelona and Real Madrid look this season after difficult summer windows.
There's the first booking of the day and the yellow is shown to Saul for a foul on Brais.
PICTURE: Koke in action for Atleti
It has been a relatively cagey start to the match by both sides. Of course, this is what Atletico Madrid tend to do. They like to start compact and then build from there.
Correa believes he was tripped as he dribbles through a couple tackles, but the referee doesn't award the Atletico Madrid forward anything, much to his annoyance and fury.
Nolito looked to be in behind for a split second following a pass from deep by Aspas, but there was just too much weight on the ball and Atletico Madrid have the goal kick.
Celta Vigo have made a decent start to this match. They are the ones who have their foot on the ball in the early stages. Atletico Madrid are quite happy to stand off the hosts.
What sort of match will we get this afternoon? Atletico Madrid enter the season as defending La Liga champions. Can Simeone’s side back that up by keeping hold of their Spanish title?

Atletico Madrid claimed their second La Liga title in seven years last season as they made the most of Barcelona and Real Madrid's weakness. Can they do the same again this season?
SUAREZ ON THE BENCH! The big team news concerning the Atletico Madrid selection is that Luis Suarez starts on the bench for the Spanish champions! He's not quite fully fit.
