Bordeaux miss penalty but snatch late win over Monaco

Girondins de Bordeaux, without a permanent coach after a tumultuous start to the season, missed a late penalty and then scored in injury time to beat AS Monaco 2-1 and claim their first Ligue 1 points of the season on Sunday.

Bordeaux's win, thanks to two goals from Guinea forward Francois Kamano, meant that 17-year-old Italian Pietro Pellegri's first goal for Monaco since joining them in January was in vain.

The win came with Bordeaux fans still waiting to find out if former France forward Thierry Henry will become their coach.

Broadcaster RMC said on Wednesday that Henry, who enjoyed a stellar club career with Arsenal and Barcelona, had agreed to take over although L'Equipe reported on Sunday that negotiations were still ongoing.

Former Uruguay international Gus Poyet was suspended 10 days ago for his comments on the club’s transfer dealings after the sale of striker Gaetan Laborde to Montpellier.

Bordeaux, under caretaker coach Eric Bedouet, went ahead from a Kamano penalty three minutes into the second half after Samuel Kalu was tripped by Jemerson.

Pellegri, making his fourth appearance for Monaco, equalised 15 minutes later as he dispossessed Jules Kounde in midfield before firing into the roof of the net.

Much is expected of Pellegri who joined Monaco from Genoa at the age of 16. He is the first player born in 2001 to score in Italy's Serie A and last September became the youngest to score a brace.

Bordeaux won a penalty in the 89th minute following a lunging tackle by Monaco goalkeeper Diego Benaglio but the Swiss turned hero seconds later by saving Kalu's weak spot kick.

It was not over, though, and three minutes later, Kamano broke down the left and rifled the winner past Benaglio.
