A goal from Kylian Mbappe and a brace from Angel Di Maria were enough for Paris Saint-Germain as they beat rivals Marseille 3-1 on Sunday.
The hosts – taking part in their first home match since their humiliating Champions League exit at the hands of Manchester United – had the ball in the net in the 15th minute but, after consulting VAR, the referee ruled Angel Di Maria was in fact offside before he clipped the ball into the net.
Marseille stood firm until first-half stoppage time, but they were unlocked by Ligue 1’s leading assist-maker – Di Maria, before the league’s top goalscorer – Kylian Mbappe – fired into the bottom corner.

Then, less than a minute into the second half, Marseille levelled after a simple long ball caused PSG problems, Lucas Ocampos poked the ball through for Valere Germain, who took it first time, firing into the bottom corner.
That parity did not last long, though, as Di Maria brilliantly fired into the net from the tightest of angles after playing a one-two with substitute Thilo Kehrer, before Steve Mandanda’s moment of madness, where he raced from his line and handled well outside his box to receive his marching orders.
From the resulting free kick, Di Maria curled a sumptuous strike into the top corner, but replacement goalkeeper Yohann Pele should have done much better considering the range of Di Maria’s strike.
From there on in, the 10 men of Marseille never had any hope of getting back into the match, as PSG earned yet another Le Classique victory with ease.

TALKING POINT

Mandanda madness gifts Le Classique once more to PSG. Crystal Palace fans were somewhat surprised and excited when the club announced they were signing France international Steve Mandanda, but nine unimpressive performances later and he was heading back to Marseille, where he is again their No 1. The moment of madness in the second half, when Marseille were still very much in the game, was a stark reminder of that rash streak that has plagued Mandanda’s career. Palace fans got off lightly.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Angel Di Maria. Often in the shadow of the more marketable Neymar and Mbappe, Di Maria continues to go about his business, and could not have had a more profitable night in Paris, registering one assist and scoring two superb goals. That is the third time in 2019 he has scored and assisted in the same league game – more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues. Not bad for someone operating in the shadows.

PLAYER RATINGS

PSG: Areola 6, Silva 7, Kimpembe 6, Marquinhos 6, Verratti 6, Paredes 6, Meunier 6, Alves 5, Kurzawa 6, Mbappe 7, Di Maria 8... Subs: Kehrer 6, Bernat 6, Dagba 6.
Marseille: Mandanda 3, Sakai 7, Kamara 6, Caleta-Car 6, Sarr 6, Ocampos 6, Sanson 6, Thauvin 5, Lopez 5, Balotelli 5, Germain 7... Subs: Pele 5, Strootman 6, Radonjic 6.

KEY MOMENTS

2’ - SAVE! Good start from the visitors, Balotelli in the thick of it, as he gets the ball out of his feet before firing a fierce strike for goal, but Alphonse Aréola is down to make a smart save.
6’ - OH MY WORD! Steve Mandanda receives the back pass, takes a touch towards his own goal, but gets his angles all wrong, and almost touches it into his own net, with the ball fortunately just rolling past the post.
15’ - VAR! VAR! Di Maria puts the ball in the net, but we are going to VAR to check! NO GOAL! Lovely finish from Di Maria as he races onto the through ball before lofting the ball over Mandanda, but replays show he is JUST offside.
45+2’ - GOOOOOAAAALLLLL!!!!! PSG 1-0 Marseille. It is that man Mbappe again as he gives PSG the lead just before half time. Great touch from Di Maria as he takes the ball down, nudges it past the defender, feeds Mbappe, who slots his 26th goal of the season into the net with aplomb.

46’ - GOOOOOOAAAALLLLLLL!!! PSG 1-1 Marseille. What a start to the second half as Germain equalises! A goal out of nowhere! A simple ball forward causes problems at the back for PSG, Ocampos nudges the ball through for Germain, who takes it first time, firing across Areola and into the bottom corner.
62’ - RED CARD! Mandanda is sent off for handling the ball outside his penalty area!!! Unbelievable decision from Mandanda to come racing from his line, Di Maria tries to nick the ball around him, Mandanda sticks out a arm, ten yards OUTSIDE his box, and is sent off. Madness from the Marseille stopper.
66’ - GOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!!! PSG 3-1 Marseille. Wow! What a goal from Di Maria as he fires a free kick into the top corner. Replacement goalkeeper Pele does not cover himself in glory there, but the free kick is sensational, right in the top corner. Pele seemed to think it was going wide, so did not dive for the ball!
90+2' - PENALTY TO PSG! Sakai brings down Mbappe, who is too quick for the defender.
90+4' - MISS! Pele goes the right way and denies Mbappe. Di Maria wanted it, Mbappe insisted, but sees his effort saved!
