The Paris-Saint Germain teenager - who netted 21 times in Ligue 1 last season - scored four goals at the World Cup finals in Russia to help France claim the trophy, and was also named the tournament's best young player.
19-year-old Mbappe is a 12/1 shot in the betting to win the top prize in Paris on December 3 with Croatia's Luka Modric 1/2 favourite to claim the top prize after his success at the FIFA world player of the year in September.
Mpbapp's France team-mate Antoine Griezmann is priced at 5/1 alongside Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who is for once an outsider as he chases a sixth award.
"If I'm going to win it, I do not know, at least I put all the ingredients on my side to win it," said Mbappe, who has scored 15 times in 15 appearances for club and country this season.
"I did everything I could until the last day of the vote. I will have no regrets, all that will happen is a bonus, and then I can not vote instead of people!
"I think a Ballon d'Or is based on highlights in the year. We are in a World Cup year so it's sure that the World Cup will weigh in.
"After that, it's still over a whole year, I've had a very good start to the season, so we'll see what it's going to be like."
