DC United captain Rooney and LA Galaxy forward Ibrahimovic have been shortlisted for the league's Most Valuable Player after impressive debut seasons in the US.
Rooney, 33, has scored 12 goals and provided 12 assists as DC qualified for the MLS play-offs with Ibrahimovic chipping in with 22 goals and 10 assists from 27 outings.
The former Old Trafford duo are also nominated for the newcomer of the year award with 37-year-old Swedish icon Zlatan up for the comeback player of the year gong.
Rooney returned to Everton after 13 years at United last year, but joined Washington's DC United in June. Ibrahimovic signed on at Galaxy in March after two seasons under Jose Mourinho at United.
He scored 17 goals in 33 Premier League appearances for United, but his time at the club was ruined by a cruciate knee ligament injury sustained in the Europa League quarter-final win over Anderlecht in April 2017.
