Paper Round: Man Utd confident on David de Gea deal, Christian Eriksen linked with £100m move

Manchester United are confident goalkeeper David de Gea will sign a new contract at the club, according to the Guardian. The Spanish shotstopper earns £180,000 a week, and he is expected to receive a significant increase on his current deal, which expires next summer. De Gea, who claimed the Golden Glove in the Premier League last season, almost joined Real Madrid three years ago, but the La Liga club recently added Thibaut Courtois to their ranks - quashing any rumours of a return to his homeland.

Paper Round’s view: No group of supporters will have been more satisfied when Courtois joined Real than United’s lot. A fax machine handily prevented De Gea from heading to Spain in 2015, and Courtois’ move this summer now makes a move out of the question. Unless another huge club comes calling, United could keep their man for many years to come.

Paris Saint-Germain will test Tottenham’s resolve with a £100m bid for Christian Eriksen, according to the Daily Star. Real Madrid are also said to be long-term admirers of the Dane, with the European champions also facing the prospect of losing Luka Modric to Inter. Eriksen has two years left on his current contract at Spurs, and PSG are willing to test the waters after declaring an interest in the midfielder.

Paper Round’s view: This report is probably worth taking with a pinch of salt, but should Real lose Modric then perhaps Spurs fans will be sweating until September 1. The thought of any Premier League club selling before the European window closes seems ludicrous, but money talks. Let’s see if they can all hold out.

Tottenham are willing to offload Danny Rose before the European transfer window closes, according to the Mirror. PSG and Schalke are reportedly interested in the £50m-rated left-back, who has been replaced by Ben Davies as the first-choice at Spurs. The 28-year-old was overlooked in favour of Ashley Young at the World Cup for England, and Tottenham are happy to sell the defender despite the fact they would not be able to replace him before January.

Paper Round’s view: Once a favourite of Mauricio Pochettino’s, you cannot help but wonder what has turned the relationship sour. Davies has of course done a stellar job at the back for Spurs, but Rose appeared to be on the right track before last season. Perhaps we will never know the real reasons, but it seems a move away – be it a loan or permanent – could suit all parties.

Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek is set for a loan move to Schalke, according to the Daily Mail. With the German transfer window open until the end of August, the Bundesliga club are said to be interested in the 22-year-old, who impressed when featuring for England at the World Cup. Having spent last season at Crystal Palace, he was named on the bench in Chelsea’s opening Premier League win at Huddersfield – with Ross Barkley starting ahead of him – and the arrival of Mateo Kovacic on loan could see Loftus-Cheek move abroad in search of more first-team opportunities.

Paper Round’s view: Just when it seemed Loftus-Cheek would be staying at Stamford Bridge to battle for a starting spot, it appears someone – be it he, his agent, or Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri – has deemed it better he venture elsewhere for the season. It feels like we are copy and pasting when asking, ‘Could this be the campaign his Chelsea career kick-starts?’, but it appears the England international will have to wait another season. How long before one of these loan switches becomes permanent? Is the real question…
