Former Manchester United and Scotland defender Gordon McQueen is to undergo treatment after being diagnosed with cancer of the larynx.
The 59-year-old will have the treatment in Middlesbrough, close to his North Yorkshire home.
A statement released on behalf of McQueen said: "Gordon McQueen has been diagnosed with cancer of the larynx and will undergo treatment at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough."
A tall, powerful centre-half, McQueen started his professional career at St Mirren before joining Leeds United in 1972.
He made 140 league appearances in six years for the Whites before but left for rivals Manchester United, where he spent seven seasons before falling out of favour, retiring soon afterwards.
Since hanging up his boots, McQueen worked in coaching, scouting and as a pundit for Sky Sports, where his daughter Hayley is a TV journalist.
