The Villa fans are signing, but there's a sense of sadness in the away end. Their Premier League status is 20 minutes away from coming to an end.

If anything this has been too easy for United. They haven't had to get out of second gear yet.

Rooney's afternoon is over as he heads for the bench to be replaced by Lingard.

Depay takes the shot on from the free-kick but fires it over the bar.

Richardson hacks down Rashford and Kevin Friend brandishes the yellow.

That defending from Villa was their worst of the afternoon... and there's been a fair few moments that could be considered contenders for that accolade.

Villa switch off from the corner and Mata is left in yards of space inside the box. He collects and turns before stinging the palms of Guzan with his shot. The keeper roars at his defenders to switch on.

Sinclair and Rojo clash by the touchline, but it was a fair challenge by the Villa man and they shake hands.

The pace of the game has dipped slightly, with United taking their foot off the gas and happy to sit on the 1-0 lead.

Villa have shown nothing today that suggests they are going to get back into it, but while the score remains 1-0 they will have hope. Remember that they have to win here to avoid confirmation of their relegation.

While we're on the subject of Rooney's belt, is it me or does he look a little 'heavier set' than he did before his injury?

Rooney has had a quiet game, but getting minutes under his belt is the most important thing for him at this stage.

Depay jinks into space and curls a cross without the outside of his boot across the face of goal. Rashford doesn't quite time his run correctly and the chance goes begging, but United are getting closer to stretching their lead.

Fellaini is crowded out on the edge of the box but United pick up the loose ball and are straight back on the front foot.

Blind turns Bacuna's cross away. He's not a centre-back really, but the Netherlands international is a classy footballer and reads the game extremely well.

The sun is straight in De Gea's eyes in this second half. If Villa have any sense they will shoot often and early... although admittedly they'll have to get within range first.

Wow. That is a truly remarkable stat.

The ball breaks for Rashford in the box again, but he snatches at his shot and can only find the side netting.

Mata slides a gem of a pass through to Rashford, who stays on his feet when challenged in the box and can't quite work the angle for a shot. That was good to see from the youngster. He would have had a penalty there if he'd fallen over Hutton's tackle (so to speak).
