The squad eventually landed safely as it travelled to the Chinese capital as part of their pre-season tour.
United forward Memphis Depay tweeted a video of himself close to the plane after it made the unscheduled stop around 70 miles from its planned destination.
He said: “We are lost somewhere, we had to make a quick landing somewhere. We tried to fly to Beijing but the weather is a little bit bad so we had to land somewhere else.
“So now we’re waiting until the weather gets a little bit easier so that we can land. I hope we can leave soon so that we can prepare ourselves for the game versus Manchester City.”
Jose Mourinho and his squad are set to train around 6.30pm local time before facing Manchester City at the National Stadium on Monday.
