Paper Round: Raheem Sterling wants £100,000-a-week rise at Manchester City
Raheem Sterling is seeking a hike on his £175,000-a-week salary, while Frank Lampard will not be signing John Terry. It’s Friday’s Paper Round!
Sterling wants £100,000-a-week rise
We start with the back page of The Times that has a story that Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling wants a contract rise of £100,000-a-week. Sterling wants a rise in his current contract of £175,000-a-week that is due to expire in 2020. Talks are set to resume with Sterling's representatives but he doesn't want parity with the club's top-earner Kevin De Bruyne. Like De Bruyne, Sterling's new deal is likely to be incentivised.
Paper Round's view: Sterling's new contract has been dragging on for some time now and the sooner that City can get it sorted the better. Sterling is only going to get better and better under Pep Guardiola and getting his long-term future locked down is well worth the club's while.
Lampard won't be signing Terry
Next to The Express with quotes from Derby County manager Frank Lampard who has said that he will not be signing former team-mate John Terry, who is currently available on a free transfer. Lampard said that his team have options in defence already but was confident that Terry would be a success wherever he moved.
Paper Round's view: When his Spartak Moscow move fell through the Terry and Lampard reunion seemed like it could have been on the cards. Obviously it's not to be but we wouldn't bet against them working together in the future...
Wilshere struggling with ankle injury
We move to the back page of The Mail which has a story that West Ham midfielder Jack Wilshere is battling to be fit to face Everton on the weekend as he struggles with an ankle injury. The injury is currently not thought to be serious but the club are monitoring the situation given Wilshere's past.
Paper Round's view: As the report points out there's nothing simple about an injury when it comes to Jack Wilshere. Hopefully this isn't a recurrence of Wilshere's past injury problems and he can get back on the pitch as soon as possible.
Loftus-Cheek suffers foot injury
Sticking with injury news and we go to The Sun who have an exclusive that Ruben Loftus-Cheek suffered a foot injury while on England duty. Loftus-Cheek will be out for a couple of weeks and will miss crucial matches against PAOK and Liverpool that could have given him the chance to impress new manager Maurizio Sarri.
Paper Round's view: Even if Loftus-Cheek is only out for a couple of weeks it will be a real blow for him. The PAOK game in particular was evidently being ear-marked as the game that could kick-start his career under Sarri. Hopefully he will get a chance when he is fit again.
