Paper Round: More doubt over Paul Pogba future, David de Gea to sign new deal
Updated 23/02/2018 at 10:01 GMT
Paul Pogba's Manchester United future continues to be uncertain, but there is better news surrounding David de Gea. It's Friday's Paper Round.
Pogba future remains uncertain
We start across the papers with various reports over Paul Pogba's future at Manchester United. The Sun have a big juicy back-page exclusive on a bust-up between Pogba and United manager Jose Mourinho.
Meanwhile in The Mail it is reported that Pogba's camp have sounded out top clubs across Europe to see if there would be any interest in the midfielder. However United are reportedly not interested in selling their record signing.
And in The Express the lead is that Pogba is furious with Mourinho because he feels he has been made a scapegoat.
Paper Round's view: Last week we said that United would be mad to sell Pogba and that view hasn't changed. He is an incredibly talented player and like all players he is just suffering a blip in form. There's no reason that things can't be worked out but something is clearly going to have to give between Mourinho and Pogba. Who is going to blink first...?
De Gea to sign new United deal
We now have two exclusives from The Times and the first is that David de Gea is set to commit his long-term future to Manchester United. He had been a target for Real Madrid but Los Blancos are likely to move for Thibaut Courtois with De Gea expected to renew with United.
Paper Round's view: Putting the Pogba speculation to one side for a minute, this would be terrific news for United. De Gea proved against Sevilla that he is one of the best keepers in the world, if not the best, and United have to do whatever they can to ensure that he spends the rest of his career at Old Trafford.
Alderweireld could be sold
The second Times exclusive is that Tottenham Hotspur are considering selling Toby Alderweireld in the summer, with the centre-back reportedly demanding £150,000 in his new contract. This would break the club's wage structure and if a compromise can't be reached a sale would be explored.
Paper Round's view: Alderweireld is one of the best defenders in the league but if Spurs are committed to this wage structure then there's not much that can be done. It's interesting to see the report say that Mauricio Pochettino is happy with the club's decision.
Sterling unsure over new contract
We end with a report from The Telegraph who say that Raheem Sterling still has not been told yet whether or not he will be given a new contract by Manchester City. Sterling's contract is due to expire in just over two years' time but he has not heard anything about a new deal. City have reportedly said that they will talk to Sterling and his representatives in due course about the player's future.
Paper Round's view: You can understand why City may look at Sterling as a possible bargaining chip but surely it makes sense for him to sign a new deal? He's having his best season in front of goal, he's home-grown and he has room to improve.
